Chapter 1

Anguish

9:30 Dragon
Dust Town, Orzammar

It was midmorning before
I awoke to the same pain in my back that I have always had. I never understood how my people could sleep on stone. They say it’s
because we come from the stone; which I respond to by rolling my eyes. I slowly rose from my bed and sighed as I began to put on my armor. When it was quiet like this, I thought about just going to the surface, but I could never abandon my family. Why do we live this life where we hurt others just to survive? Why doesn't the carta find another way? I sighed again, something I did more frequently every day. I put on my sword belt and slid my shield onto my back. Just as I began to step from my room, I stopped and put my hands to my face. I could feel the tears running down my face. I didn't want to do this anymore; the anguish took over as I cried silently to myself. Then thought of what would happen to my family if I quit or died crossed my mindand I tried to calm down, but was unsuccessful. It took me an hour to calm down enough to stop crying and breathe easier. By that time, I heard the boss come in the front door and immediately start his mess. Sometimes I just wanted to kill him…someday I just might.

I sat waiting for the boss to shut up; all he does is drone on and on. Once again, I am listening to this cave tick babble on about how we owe him. As he talked, I could feel his eyes on me. I still couldn't get the feeling of his revolting touch off me. It makes me sick knowing that he had done the same thing to Rica. I wanted to die every time I think of how I failed to protect her from that. "Hey Duster, are you listening?" the boss yelled. "Yea boss," I answered, imagining a knife stuck through his throat. He then proceeded to reminded us that we were replaceable and blah blah blah…I tuned his voice out.

It took the idiot two hours to finally shut his mouth and let us go. I stepped out of the house lost in thought, wandering aimlessly through Dust Town until I heard a familiar crazed laugh accompanied by fighting. I walked around the corner to see some carta members on fire and others frozen. It didn't take long to pinpoint the source of this chaos. It was Ruby, or as she is popularly known "Crazy Ruby", and she was teaching some of our fellow carta a lesson. She was always prepared for a fight, with her long ruby red hair whipping back and forth. I leaned up against a wall and waited for her to finish. The last time I got near her when she was using those flasks, I was frozen for hours. I never understood why anyone would want to cover themselves in magic, leave it to the mages I say. After a few minutes, the rest retreated and Ruby spotted me, walking towards me.

"Orza! What's shaping?" she said breathing hard from the fight. "Same crap, different day" I replied with a pained expression. "Yea the boss tends to have that effect." She became animated as she changed the subject to her favorite one. "Oh Orza, I saw this noble in the diamond quarter the other day, and he had such a glorious beard!" she said with great enthusiasm. "You really should talk to someone about this issue Ruby", I said with a concerned look on my face. "What issue?" she asked honestly confused. I sighed and shook my head, "Never mind, I need to find Leske".

It didn't take long to find Leske, he was talking to one of the other carta girls. I walked up to them and crossed my arms as I stared at the two of them. He just smiled as the girl he was talking to turned and walked off, shooting a glare my way as she left. I raised my eyebrow and shrugged my shoulders, which just made her storm off faster in a huff. I rolled my eyes as I turned back to Leske. "Leske, the boss has a job for us," I told him in a tired tone. "What, no hello Leske? It's nice to see you, Leske? Go jump in a lava flow, Leske? Maybe I should go talk to your sister," he said with a wicked grin. I glared at him and then punched him in the nose. "Watch how you talk about my sister, salroka!" I said angrily.

He glared back at me but quickly shrugged it off. "Well you may not drink, but you are so much like your mother.” I punched him again, knocking him to the ground this time and stormed off. I was going to finish the job myself and get it over with. I was too angry at Leske to want to work this job with him.

After reluctantly knocking together some skulls for information, I found my target in Tapsters Tavern. This dwarf had some serious stones to dare to cross the boss, especially if he couldn't defend himself that well. I had forgotten the dwarf’s name but I knew his face; spotting him didn't take long. I sat down across from him and he responded to my audacity by glaring at me. As he looked closer at me and saw my face tattoo, he instantly changed his attitude. This guy knew he messed up and I could tell he was one second away from pissing himself. I sighed and told him, "We both know you have been cheating the boss.” He started sweating and stuttering, trying to come up with an excuse, to no avail. I sighed again, for what felt like the hundredth time today; I told him to just get lost, go to the surface and never come back. He smiled and thanked me as he quickly ran out of the tavern. I leaned over the table and put my face in my hands, try to think of what to say to the boss.

I was still sitting there when I heard a familiar clanking noise; I turned to see Ruby walking in. I could feel the other dwarves of higher castes squirm and groan at another casteless walking into Tapsters. I smiled at that thought and waved for Ruby to join me. She sat down, a concerned look on her face. "Hey Salroka, I heard you let the duster that owed the boss money go.” I started crying again, pouring my heart out to her, telling her that I just didn't want to kill anymore. She quickly came to my side and hugged me tightly. As she held me, she whispered in my ear that she would take care of everything. How she was going to accomplish this I had no idea. After quietly crying on her shoulder for a few minutes, I got up and we headed to the boss's shop. I just hoped that whatever it was, Ruby's plan worked.

Chapter 2
The Pressure is Real

Ruby and I made our way to the boss's shop, my heart trying to pound its way out *of my chest with worry. The constant dry heat wasn't helping me feel better. The higher up we went the worse it got. What was that saying, heat always rises? I don't know. As least there was less volcanic dust to inhale up here. I was lost in thought, and before I knew it, I spotted the boss's shop, but not before Ruby spotted a shopkeeper’s beard. I heard her giddy giggle and saw her rub her hands together. I rolled my eyes and grabbed her arm, dragging her to the shop. Her response was to give her pouty face. As soon as we walked into the shop, I saw Leske in a corner talking to the boss's second in command. It never surprised me that he was such a bootlicker. We walked up to the boss as he glared at us and went on about how I had let the target go and made him look weak. Before I could say anything to defend myself, Ruby spoke up. "Boss, I know she screwed up and lost you money and merchandise, but where was Leske in all of this?" she asked with a wicked grin while looking over at Leske. The boss looked thoughtful for a moment and scowled at Leske. Ruby continued. "I mean if he was there it might not have gone down the way it did. Orza might have had your money and stolen merchandise if he had been there with her. Am I wrong boss?" she said smiling, knowing that she had won him to our side.

I had to hide my reaction to Ruby and her plan. I couldn't believe this; she was throwing Leske under the rolling boulder! The boss may actually fall for it! He lost it, but not in the way I imagined. "Well! This may be true but I can't just let Orza off so easy. I have one more job for her and if she backs out of this one, I will make sure her and her family don't live to regret it.” Both Ruby and I nodded and smiled as he told us what I was *going to do. What I was *about to do was not going to be easy, but I felt could do it.

It took approximately thirty minutes to walk across the long bridge to the Proving Grounds and I could feel my heart racing. I hoped this fake document would be enough to fool the guards or else there wasn't going to be any way to accomplish my goal. As I got closer to the grounds, I started having doubts, but visions of my family starving kept me going. I could see the suspicion and disgust on the faces of the guards as I passed them. I took a deep breath and showed them the paper. The leader of this particular set of guards examined it and scoffed in irritation. Despite his attitude, he let me through.

I exhaled as I walked through the gates, scanning the area as I walked. It wasn't as grand as I had always imagined but it was still fairly nice. I stopped suddenly, spotting a random human. That must be the warden the boss mentioned. Too bad Ruby wasn't here; she would die over the warden’s beard.

Alright, attention back to the mission; all this trouble to drug a guy’s water. I sighed and walked around, looking for my targets. It wasn't hard to find them, since there were very few people around. I found my first target passed out drunk and I sighed. If I were alone, I could drug the other target without a problem. I was still standing there in a panic when I heard the first target’s name called. My mind raced and then it hit me: just fight in his place! I quickly put on his armor, which was a bit too tight across the chest. But somehow I managed to get it on. I had just put the helmet on and walked out when one of the guards came over. I quickly nodded and he went back to his post. I just hope I can pull this off, I thought to myself as I approached the guard. He asked if I was ready and I nodded; that seemed to be enough.

The gates opened and I emerged to a roaring crowd and suddenly all fear was gone, replaced by a rush I had never felt before. I got out my sword and shield and rotated both arms, preparing for battle. All I had to do was win, no pressure right? The thought ran through my head as my opponent walked out of the other side.

When I saw my opponent, I felt like I could win despite the fact he had a two-handed hammer. The announcement *naming us was made and when I heard "Fight", I prepared myself. My opponent came at me like a darkspawn in a rage. I had fought a darkspawn once, and surprisingly this fighter wasn't nearly as intimidating. He looked like he had a personal grudge against me. Seeing the individual he thought he was fighting, I didn't doubt it. However, despite his skill, I was better. Years of fighting for every little thing, you tend to learn a few tricks.

I had done it! I had beaten them all! Sodding nug humpers never stood a chance. However, my joyous victory was cut short when "The Original" decided to waddle his drunk self out into the arena. I was going to die now because of this drunk! I was immediately surrounded by guards, to my great irritation.

Just as the warden began speaking, I was hit from behind and everything went dark.
