Possibly down to a resource issue.
I didn't take them to be common, even in elven ruins, so... eh.
I would highly welcome their inclusion in DA4 though. Especially if we move into the site of Arlathan.
I think some stuff just didn't get included in time: Ogres and Shrieks, Desire Demons, Varterrals, etc.
Descent got to fill out the Darkspawn more and Trespasser decided for Qunari.
I hope DA4 remembers stuff like Varterrals and Desire Demons especially. Its friggin Tevinter!

I can't actually think of another elvhen ruin besides the Temple of Dirthamen where I would expect a Varterral to appear. And it kinda already had guardians in the form of Arcane Horrors.
Yeah its just justifiable enough. JUST enough.

So now that we know more about the ancient elves, anyone care to take a shot at why it wanted to kill Merrill in DA2 but not Zevran?

I think the Varteral (?) in DA2 was going bonkers and killing Dalish hunters?
Although might have been an anti slaves uprising mechanism and anything with valasslin would get chopped chopped once it was unleashed.Doubt that though.

Did Zevran in DA2 not have the tatoo?

Crows tattoo..anyway I said I didn't buy into my own clumsy explanation.^^
As far as I know those beats are blind and there's no difference between a city elf and a Dalish.
I think you slay the Varterral after he went bonkers , and Zevran faced the Varterral "reborn" (they can't really be slained it seems ) so maybe a few knock in the head solved its issue?

Yeah, basically. It was a guardian of the ancient elves, not the Halamshiral elves.

I remember that thing. It was the hardest fight in DA2 for me, only just scraped in the victory. I also remember having read a codex in DA2 that said something about a very special circumstance that had created it as a guardian, so I'd thought it was supposed to be unique and not something I'd be fighting again... But then another showed up...

I'd chalk it up to Hawke, if Merrill was alone she would have probably been fine, but standing next to Hawke some of the human cooties/stink rubbed off and the Varterral took offense. Alternatively, it could have reacted poorly to her because she aided Hawke/her party members when the Varterral was trying to kill them, meaning she was added to the target list.
Otherwise, it's probably just down to a case of gameplay/lore segregation.

Same varterral. It can return to life if killed. Merrill can confirm this.I remember that thing. It was the hardest fight in DA2 for me, only just scraped in the victory. Zevran was alone and likely just snuck past it. Merrill was with a shemlen and was there to kill it.So now that we know more about the ancient elves, anyone care to take a shot at why it wanted to kill Merrill in DA2 but not Zevran?
The varterral in The Masked Empire didn't try to kill elves either until they attacked it. It wasn't too fond of shems, however.
