They're not going to let a murderer of children out of that cage. Him escaping the horde would be pretty stupid as well considering he's just fine staying there if you open up the gate and refuse to take him with you.

Or, someone in Lothering takes pity on him and opens the cage when the darkspawn show up. People might have been fine with him being there when there was no threat, but I know people who wouldn't be kosher with leaving ANYONE behind to get ripped apart like that. There could be any number of ways he could have gotten out, really.

And he somehow overcomes a horde of darkspawn? Without succumbing teh blight sickness?
And even if he left lothering before then (I guess he has a face heel turn from sitting there waiting to die for ~reasons~ ) he still doesn't have his sword.
It's just no. It's an unneeded backpedal.
Or maybe Flemeth freed him. I mean, she was flying around in the area and all that.
It's at the very least plausible.
