Companions will probably return as NPCs. Or at least Dorian probably will, maybe Morrigan but she might skip the even-numbered games.
Please no returning companions in DA4.

I don't mind 'em bringing back characters, unless said character was killable.

Any character that can be romance is out.
Because?
Nothing require the returning character to be a romance option, so it doesn't matter if they were already a romance option. For example, Leliana. (Advisors were basically companions in DAI, they just didn't tag along for the grinding).
On top of it, it is not even required for them to be alive at the end of the previous game (see Oghren and Leliana) or consistent with their previous end of game status (see Anders and Cullen).

Yeah, to be honest I'd rather the writers try to be creative and find something new to fit the new game, than try to capitalise on already existing characters.

Agreed, I dislike returning companions (or even cameos) when the protagonists changes. I'd rather revisit and expand on their old bonds with (in this case) the Inquisitor than have to get to know them all over again, plus I like to headcanon that at least some her friends actually stick with her instead of immediately scattering to all corners of Thedas without looking back.
If the Inquisitor comes back as a playable character as I hope she will, all's good as far as returning characters are concerned. But if not, the writers actually need to stick to their "it's about the setting, nor the characters" claim and stop reusing NPCs. If everyone except for old player characters comes back, it feels like deliberate disregard of old protagonists and their friendships.

1. Most can die.
2.The devs don't want issues with past li and players feeling for them.

I would also like to see Merrill again.
But I agree that they shouldn't be party members. I can't see how it would make sense given the next game is in Tevinter.

Oghren had his character development undone, DA2 Anders was a good character but had little enough to do with Awakening Anders that he might as well have been another character, and Varric and Leliana were certainly the worst part of the DAI cast.

Agreed. It always leads to retcons or side stepping something that happened in previous games to get them into the game. Not a fan of returning companions one bit.

But its the new Varric, the funny one. I personaly was all irritated with DA2 Varric, the only reason I had him follow me all the game was because there was no 1 else xD
Also, I think BW keeps a very good balanca of returning and new companions, theres nothing to complain about, same for Leliana, its not the naive lil girl I used to love. Shes a cold ****** wearing metal jacket and controling lifes from a board map.
Its nice to see how they changed and find out why, I think your topic is stupid xD
Edit: all of you who agree with OP are stupid too xD
I think returning companions in fact brought more to this game than many new ones, you probably just crossed them off from the begging( its known as "actualy I already know everything" syndrom popular in nerds, which is why most of their friends are NPC)

I like to see characters recur, but in cases where they were LIs in particular, it should be along with the previous protagonist, at least for a scene or two. With Morrigan, I was glad to see her, I love the character, but I never got a glimpse of anything I was looking forward to seeing or really wanted to see. We never see King or Queen Warden. Hawke shows up alone when it should've been alongside other potential cameos. Anders should've been there if he's alive. They turned Isabela into mp cannon fodder. So really, recurring characters in general are hamstrung by the devs' reluctance to do anything much with our former protagonists and their relationships. That's shooting holes in the story to me at this point. Those moments should have been in this game. They should factor into future games. Their choice so far not to make anything pay off in continuity is a disaster; they shouldn't double down on it. They can do a lot better.
As permanent party members, I guess it's a very limited pool. Canderous Ordo (old names are foggy right now, hope that's right
) was the best recurring companion* so far, in KoTOR 2, and he was great. So it's not like they can't make it work. A dwarf version of Shale, the remaining DA:A and Witch Hunt companions would all work depending on the game. I'd like to see Zevran, Isabela, Sera, depending on the game and the appearance of former protags. I like appropriate characters to make appearances, but not many make sense as repeat companions. Is it confirmed the next game's in Tevinter? Not thrilled with that. :-/ Haven't met a Tevinter character yet I liked or thought was all that interesting. More blood magic and qunari, feels almost like DA2 2.0. I'd like Talis as a party member, I think, if we are stuck with Tevinter. She's probably it. Don't care to see Fenris or Dorian again, but I imagine we will. Hopefully Sten will have a major npc role. Bull will probably make an appearance.
Edit: *best recurring companion in a game with a new protagonist, so excluding Mass Effect

I only want people who have a relevant reason to be in Tevinter to show up. So that means Dorian, and possibly Fenris may have reason to be. Perhaps Arishok/Sten if they are going to deal with Seheron. Characters that have plot ties to the area and aren't just fan service cameos.
We're finally getting away from the South, and as the South never seems to care what's going on up North, I want that same attitude extended back to them. So no King Alistair, No Celene/Gaspard/whoever rules Orlais. I don't care about the Divine because it's all about the Archon now. We're ages away from Kirkwall so I don't need to know what Varric and the gang are up to.
Just, no.
I love these characters, I do. But the South and that cast have had three games and 15 in-game years of popping up now. Bring me my new cast of blood thirsty Magisters with maybe some from Nevarra or the Anderfels. It's their time now.

Totally agree OP. Varric is a perfect example, in DA2 we got to know him organically and he was connected to the story and to Hawke. In DA:I he's this sudden cameo with no connection and the writers rely on the fact that the player already knows and likes him so he doesn't get much development and isn't connected to the plot (unfortunately neither are most of the other companions
)

Yeah... Bianca told the Carta about the Thaig they found the Red Lyrium in, who then told Corys people. And he was a prisoner of Cassandra when DA 2 started. He also fought Corypheus once already.
Sure, he's no Solas, but saying he's not connected at all is just dumb.

Yes I agree, after all it is only logical that everyone in the south knowing Solas is going to destroy whole world should just sit back and enjoy because they never had interes in whats going on in the north so why would they now.
Also I belive Oswin should be prosecuted and some1 should make no store sells the game to him, because he is not from Tevinter and he shouldnt care wahts going on in there.
Actualy I know we all complained when there was not enough easter eggs but now that you flooded us with them we have nothing to complain about so we will complain about how many easter eggs cover so many decisions from past games are in DAI and how muchw e dont like them, and we dont want them anymore.
Irrational ? ofcourse we are irrational, we paid for the game we have right to want it to be the way we want it to!!

Also I dont understand why Corryphus returns as an enemy since we already killed him in the DA2. I think it would be stupid if they did the same with Solas returning as an enemy ;/
No returning enemies please.

He was connected to the plot, but he was pretty much just a way to introduce Bianca and Hawke. It might have even been better to have Bianca been a companion who introduced Varric and then Hawke.
Here is a good example of how little Varric develops. You support the other side in the mage-Templar war than Hawke? He doesn't really care too much, doesn't have a "what the hell did you just do?!" moment like Solas, Dorian or Cassandra. Does Hawke die in the Fade? He'll have a touching scene, but a couple dialogues later he's playing Wicked Grace and introducing you to Bianca all hunky dory. Finds out Bianca is the leak giving Red Lyrium to Cory? He really does not care and they're still about as developed as ever, but now we have like... a super generic dwarf face to associate the name with.
Varric hardly develops, but I mostly think this is because it was scrapped from the game. It seemed like companion reaction to the protag was going to be a bigger deal, and then it got cut and only a few of these moments carried over into the final game.
As for me, I am fine with a couple of returning characters if they absolutely made sense. For instance, Varric seems like he would make sense in DA:I... but what if Bianca had been the companion? Varric and Hawke could have made a cameo and Bianca could have been revealed to been the leak to Cory AND been a companion we could react to such a betrayal towards (like Blackwall). Varric's entire point in the game was to introduce us to Hawke and Bianca and to remind us a lot of DA:I was taken from the planned DA2 DLC Exalted March.

Firstly, your gendering is wrong and don't ever say someone should be prosecuted for having an opinion. Seriously, that's messed up.
Secondly, how does everyone in the South know about Solas's plans? How do we even know that DA4's main plot is going to revolve completely around the story of Solas? All we know is it will be set in Tevinter. We don't know who the protagonist will be or what the plot will be. So I can't see why all the South suddenly need to be wandering up North. They've got problems of their own and a lot of the characters just are not relevant anymore.
Also, purchasing something does not entitle you to be completely catered for.

That's my main issue with DA games in general. The events have no real impact on the people. There is a soul crushing moment and 5 minutes later you're making jokes. It's been the same in every game.
And yes, I'm aware "gallows humour" is a very common coping mechanism in real life, the soldiers in the trenches of WW1 were cracking jokes too about body parts etc, but it still feels so poorly done that it's not the same, the story and events have 0 impact on anyone.
