I hope not. If so that's forcing a decision from DA:O. It really bugged me that Leliana was in DA2/DA:I since I killed her in one of my playthroughs. Party members back as important NPCs is fine, former NPCs as partymembers, ok I guess, but NOT if they were killable.

Actually, I rather like the idea of choice based companions whose presence is dependent on your prior decisions; it actually makes your choices have consequence. The Iron Bull decision in DAI actually mattered because of the ultimate outcome in Trespasser.

I'd actually like to see them be really ballsy and gate two companions behind mutually exclusive story choices (kind of like the Iorveth/Roche branching storyline in Witcher 2). The opportunity was there with Dorian and Cole in In Hushed Whispers and Champions of the Just (one might almost suspect they seriously considered it during development), but in the end they contrived so that whichever one you didn't go with shows up at Haven for In Your Heart Shall Bleed. They missed the chance in DAI, so I'd like to see them do it in DA4, possibly by making us choose between a Tevinter or Qunari companion.

After Trespasser, it would seem like it would be all new companions in DA4, since the Inquisitor makes a point of saying that it needs to be all new people who Solas would not expect. The only companion I would expect to return is Dorian, since it seems likely he's going to be the contact between this new group of people and whatever remains of the Inquisition, but he'd probably have to be rather sneaky about it so Solas's agents don't make the connection - so I'd guess no where near as big a role as Cullen/Josie/Leliana in DA:I. And I expect the Inquisitor to show up at some pivotal moment, tho who knows, maybe people raged about Hawke so much that Bioware won't want to deal with that again - tho I personally loved Hawke's return, despite her acting slightly out of character.

I hope not. Being insulted again would be a bummer.

My ass!

If Dragon Age 4 won't give me the joy to count on an improved, badass, slavers killer Fenris then I'll really be disappointed.

I'd love Fenris to return if the new game is set primarily in Tevinter. Dorian, too. Those two in the same party would make for some excellent banter.

More like "please no returning characters" ,im fine with 1 or 2 but that they should settle on.

Its more or less a trope to get a companion from previous games now and I believe Bioware said they would only add a character if it felt right for them to be there

Just one to provide the exposition dump and serve as a callback for the previous. No more than that though.

I am fine with that as well. Mass Effect handled that with several of their companions, like Kaiden, Ashley or Wrex. What I don't want to see is choices about killable characters ignored. So because Morrigan's child is optional I think it would be bs if he is a forced companion in DA4. Like Leliana is forced as an advisor, no matter what you did in DA:O.

Having Dorian or Cole would have been cool though, wish they had gone for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Maevaris is a companion. Tho, she's not really a returning companion so much as someone who's just been mentioned a bit.

I have a great preference for seeing Maevaris as a companion in the next game instead of being presented with Dorian and asked to get to know him all over again. As if they do insist on bringing back all these old faces, then I'd much rather be doing that game with the player character the companion knows and has had a personal involvement with. So I'd feel like I was meeting up with an old friend.
Instead of meeting a complete stranger. Who my character gets to know for the first time. So i'd certainly hope that any of the Inquisitors companions who may pop up in the next game aren't given companion status again and the screen time they take up is kept to a bare minimum.

Well, thing is killing Fenris or sending him back with Danarius was an option so I can see him as cameo (maybe) but not companion.

I would love to have Dorian back for longer than just cameo though, but not sure if as companion. My fem inquisitor would be jealous of her BFF's new companions anyway. :P

Edit:

But when I think about it Dorian seems to be the only one who could potentially return as companion.

Viv and Cas - not an option cause of potential Divine

Solas - ahaha nope

Varric - I think it's safe to assume he will stay in Kirkwall after DA:I

Iron Bull - since him dying is an option, probably not

Blackwall - same story, can die so nope

Sera - err well technically she could come back but looking at her I strongly doubt it especially if we will indeed end in Tevinter

Cole - well technically could come back but looking at his tresspaser endings idk, cameo for sure but not companion
