There's a Welsh version of it as well. Arawn, the King of the Otherworld, supposedly came for the souls of the dead with a pack of spectral hunting hounds called the Cwn Annwn.
As others have said, the song may just have been chosen for its western vibe, but it's fun to speculate on other possible, creepier, meanings.
I hope our villains are heralded with the noises of migrating geese.
