Origins are known for random crashes it depends how your pc is strong so time is 10-30 mins but there is a fix for stopping crashes Load the game, then CTRL ALT DEL and click the Processes tab. Right click on DAOrigins.exe and click Set Affinity, then only check ONE CPU (mine is set to my 4th CPU). Leave all others unchecked. And say Goodbye crashes

As an alternative, you can use your steam key to redeem the game on Origins ; after that you can download a digital copy. It may work better...

{If this is an old retail copy, don't fret: the digital download will come bare, but can you add the DLC from your BSN profile (lots of downloading I know)}

I understand that the PhysX drivers can be a problem:

You may need to uninstall the PhysX drivers already installed first.

Thanks, knew this, but had forgotten - experienced a few crashes now that I though to give the game another go.

I'd add to this advice that on windows 8 at least, the to get to see DAOrigins.exe, and set it's affinity, you first have to select the dragon age program from the list, right click, and click "go to details" from the menu - only then do you see the detailed list of processes, in which you can find DAOrigins.exe, and set it's affinity.

On earlier versions of Windows you could get there with fewer clicks. Don't really understand why developers think it better to hide such functionality behind more layers of menus, necessitating more searching and clicks.

You have to reset the process tab every time you play with a quad core? Is there a permanent way to set the game so it quits crashing? Thank you

The best you can do is write a batch script that'll start DA:O and set its affinity. Something like (I'm on my phone here, don't use this verbatim)

start "c:\install\dir\bin_ship\daorigins.exe" /affinity 1

Like this...                 start "c:\install\Program Files (x86)\Dragon Age\bin_ship\daorigins.exe" /affinity 1

Write this with notepad and extend with .bat

Then where does it go, in bin_ship?

It goes into your DA shortcut in the Target field. Should look like cmd /C start "X:\install\Dragon Age\bin_ship\daorigins.exe" /high /affinity 1 "X:\install\Dragon Age\bin_ship\daorigins.exe" -enabledeveloperconsole

Remove "-enabledeveloperconsole" if you don't want the console.

note - on my six core CPU I found /affinity 5 worked a bit better as it set the game to run on 2 cores(#s 0 and 2).

Just to make it a little simpler.
Right click on the shortcut you use to start the game & select Properties.
If the Target location is bin_ship, Then click in the blue Target box & back arrow to the start & paste what's below in front of what's there.
Note: There should be a space between the 1 and the "

cmd /C START "daorigins.exe" /affinity 1

Having said that, try running on one core first and see if it fixes the crashing.
No point using 1/4 of your processing power if it doesn't.
DragonAge Origins very rarely crashes on me (I can't remember the last time) & I have always run it on 4 cores.

Wow.. thank you all. This should be added to daorigins.exe and not DAOriginsLauncher.exe ????

I already have a separate shortcut for the console.

So, my shortcut would be this? This did not work very well.. the game never fully launched... and it took so long just to get to the start screen. Windows added the C:\Windows\System32\ to the shortcut...

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C START "daorigins.exe" /affinity 1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dragon Age\bin_ship\daorigins.exe"

EDITED~~ I just found out the stand-alone CC also crashes during character creation

EDITED again.. today the CC did not crash. This must be something with my system. I'll do some checking.

Have you installed the Legacy Physics drivers?
http://www.nvidia.co...acy-driver.html

That could also just be a problem with your chargenmorphcfg.xml

Yes, I have them.^^ My chargenmorphcfg is the same one I used with the dual core CPU with no crashes. I got my new memory installed, so I'll give it a good test tomorrow. I am playing DAI tonight.

I seem to have fixed the crashes. Here is my video driver window. I selected my video card instead letting nvidia choose between the gpu and cpu for me.

I had some mod conflict. Elvhenan Weapons was conflicting with another weapon mod. I ran DA logging and on my last freeze-up during a normal scene with my Dalish, I had to shut down DAO forcibly. I read the log file and it was 50 lines of Elvhenan Weapons looking for plot-flags and such...right before the freeze-up.

I had used this mod for years with no trouble, but something I added for this play-thru must have really conflicted in some way. Plus, I never got the weapons in inventory as before. So. Back to testing and I'll post if I get any more freeze-ups or crashes.
