It would be nice to see more quests that doesn't involve killing everything in sight. It would be nice to have more quests involving curing viruses, or solving puzzles in some way. This game sounds like the plot is about exploring the unknown and maybe the game should show that in a star trek like way.
Would you like to see more varied quests?

I agree completely with you OP. We need a bit more variation.

What is the protagonist supposed to be doing to 'cure viruses'?

I am all for more puzzles in RPGs. Take some hints from classic adventures. Give us items for puzzles (usually we have an inventory, right?). Give us clever solutions to problems. I am not saying that it should be the only way to move forward but as an alternative to killing every NPC in sight, it would really be appreciated. Had to fit the general story and setup of course though.

I'm a little sceptical about what the gameplay would be like in these. If the puzzles were in the vein of Halflife 2, then yeah, that would be great. But puzzles like a tower of hanoi are pretty lame. Good puzzles like that are great the first time you meet them but can be tedious after that. Blending the puzzle with the gameplay is a real art.

Have you ever played Halflife 2 or Portal or even Myst? The best puzzles rarely involve an inventory.

Certain puzzles will break immersion.
I'm a badarse N7 operative taking the time to match 3 colors or do some codebreaking thingy... I'd hate it.
Also, ME had puzzles the 1st two games (unlocking safes etc). I didn't like them...

I'd like to see some elimination, to be honest.
I would like to eliminate the "go make me a sandwich" fetch quests that do not even trigger a deep/meaningful conversation.

To be fair before joining the military Shepard did run a gormet sandwich truck. And when the Galaxy is about to be wiped out I could really go for a good sandwich. Mmnnnn dreaming of a grilled cheese with tomato soup right now.

Played all of them and they are all great. But I also played a lot of point & click adventures and combining items in creative ways can also be lot's of fun, especially in the context of a story. Since most RPGs have inventories anyway, I am just wondering why they are hardly ever used for anything but weapons and armor.
Doesn't mean I am against environment based puzzles. Bring it all on.

What counts as a "puzzle" in HL2?
ME2 had a few puzzle missions, come to think of it, mostly N7s.

No, I think we need more fetch quests, nothing immerses me into an rpg more.

There were heaps of physics based puzzles often utilizing the gravity gun. Things involving weight needed to make jumps, clear a bridge or open a gate to get the car through etc. But a lot of them blended in effortlessly with the gameplay, like shutting down the nuclear reactor in episode 1 or defending the base from the walkers in episode 2. There were also environmental things like turrets you could use. The puzzles were puzzles without sticking out a red flag and saying "I am a puzzle".

Missions that involve crewmembers
On a mission that requires a doctor to treat an injured victim before he/she can be moved
Bring in an engineer to repair something while the squad provides cover fire

We clearly need to make side quests mandatory to continue the main plot. That is the best idea and there are absolutely no flaws with it at all!

Please no fetch quests in this game, the search and rescue function was a bit tedious in ME3 not as bad as planet scanning but still not great.

Basically:
- No meaningless quest in which you need to get X from the other side of the galaxy, to get nothing or just money/assets that don't really add anything valuabke. ME3 had a lot of these and DAI was downright infested with them.
- PHYSICS. Half Life 2 came out in 2004. It should be standard for triple A titles by now. You can have different type of puzzles with them, instead of "shooting everything and push the button".
- I think it's a given, but more character driven quests. I really missed the loyalty missions on ME3 ![]()

We need some form of number system used as a requirement to unlock story missions. For example, to earn said number we must go and collect a certain amount of space flowers for Auntie Sue....we can call it Galactic Power!
.....wait, wrong game
Seriously though - I have always felt that Mass Effect has done a good job with quest variety and making fetch quests rather enjoyable by not feeling like fetch quests. My only real gripe was with Mass Effect 1 and the reused bases/environments in side-content, but still the quests involved were of quality content.

I also don't like the overabundance of loyalty missions like ME2 had.

Well, you could just replace "curing viruses" to "assisting with curing a virus/disease". But Shepard already does that in ME2, and does concoct some sort of cure for something in Noveria in the lab.

I'd like to see missions that can end non-violently also. I liked the Father Kyle mission, because if I so inclined I could just decide to wipe out the entire facility, or get it done without a single shot fired. The hostage situation on the freighter was another, though you had no choice but to kill a few of them to get to it.
