I never got how most of the npcs and companions armor looked so much better than what you could wear as the inquisitor. The best looking armor for the quizzy I think is the armor from the deluxe edition. I am a mage player so I love flowing robes and it just felt like we had no opinions to be honest.

Anyone else feel this way?

Sadly, yes. I'd love to rock Sera's gear personally.

The only way to get good equipment for the quizy is from Jaws of Hakkon or Trespasser.

I played an elf mage and was hunting down those beautiful elven mage armors but always ended up with some sh*t-looking but with better stats armor.

At least there were no awful circle mage robes)

I have also once encountered an elf in Skyhold who was in a sentinel armor. I was furious-why cant i just order him to give me his armor, but i finally received one after complition of a war table mission

Well, she does offer to introduce you to her stylist.  I liked Viv's look and Cass had some nice armor too.

couldn't agree more. just look at some of those orlesian officers standing around in the exalted plains…there's this set of armor that looks ornate and with a cape to boot. and it's worn by freaking mooks.

I wish we could have stolen a companion's look. I would totally have rocked Blackwall's armors.

Well this is pretty subjective, I quite like the designs they developed for the Inquisitor armor, the warrior mail set being my favorite. I think the dragon armor from the deluxe is rather hideous.

Companions got proper armors, while we player characters got medieval matrix rejects.

The companions' armours were designed to reflect what Bioware tries to make their styles, where as the inquisitor's armour was essentially designed to be as generic and non-gendered as possible so as to not offend anyone, meaning they just copy/pasted the male versions for female PCs. See Halamshiral attire or worse the Deluxe edition armour which doesn't even have proper female meshes [seriously female elf and dragon armour  ].

Npc's and companions do not need to have their armor adjusted for 8 different body types. It takes 1 model to dress an orlesian guard (which is never going to change and\or take part in cinematics), it takes 8 models to dress the Inquisitor (avoiding all possible animation\ weapon\hair glitches included) . Say 'Hello' to multiple races.

Mind you, I think that DAI does have some really great outfits, mostly those which had been designed as 'iconic' ones (like 'prowler' and its redesigns - I love it).  Still, it's obvious that they had to adapt and redistribute their resources.

Also the Orlesians had ornament boobies on their armor.

I will say that I liked Cassandra's armor - long flowing coat. The Mage armors for my Inquisitor were

What really irks me with the mage armor is your damn PJs show through.

And of course there are the staves. Either there so over-sized and/or f'ugly. Hell the staff at the B.E. you can buy looks like Zoidberg's head on a stick,

I like the designs too, but I was pretty disappointed at the lack of variety on my first playthrough. Especially after DA2 had such a range, it was like going back to DAO again.

There's more variety now with dlc gear, the ability to get rare schematics through BE, and I hear some armour has been patched into war table rewards. Schematics for those would be appreciated for those, rather than pretty armours with rubbish stats.

This. Plus, it's part of their overall character design, which means it reflects them in unique ways. There's no real feasible way for them to art design/mesh the infinity number or armors/robes/upgrades that would satisfy every single player and their unique Inquisitors.

And I for one am glad that they kept the designs between male and female Inquisitors pretty much the same. I think my female Inquisitors look great in their armor (especially the mage hoodies), and it's nice to have a few games that don't toss me gear curveballs in that regards. "If you liked this leather duster on your male toons, then you'll love it as two leather straps and a yard of fishnet on your females!"

I don't want an infinite number of armour. I want a few visually distinct sets. The armour you wear at the beginning is almost identical to the armour you wear at the end. The armour from class to class only has minor changes, sometimes being as minor as a book instead of a lockpick set.

Im not hard to please. Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, all had enough armour variety to keep me satisfied. But Inquisition? They just bury you in generic crap. The same three sets, in infinte variations. Coat, "armor" and "mail". Armour here meaning a tiny breastplate and nothing else and mail, of course, meaning scale. Occasionally, you get the opportunity to play dress up and wear a set the enemies wear, like Templar or Warden armour. But even still, theres no shortage of good looking NPC gear that we have no access to for no discernible reason. Like the Ferelden soldier armour or the ornamental Orlesian plate with cape that someone else mentioned in the thread.

Look at the **** they pulled with The Skin That Stalks and tell me they are putting enough effort into armour variety.

Once again. 1 (one) armour for the PC is actually 8 (eight) models to work with. It makes 80 for 10. No need to go 'infinite' to run out of time\resources\budget.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for those who are happy to play as their Qunari, but math is a stubborn thing. It's  '80:10' vs '20:10'.

So 'few' is exactly what we get.

There are mods out that allow you to wear Companion armour on your Inquisitor. I always found the base Inquisitor armour bland, and though I understand why they did that in a way (neutral so you're not forced to make your Inq look fabulous when you may RP a gritty badass, for example), they really were lacking. It annoyed me to high heaven seeing Dorian run around in his detailed leathers, or Sera who actually looked like a rogue, while I, as an archer, was stuck with badly fitting unique armours, or bland Inq armour. I do hope in DA4 they tone down the race selection and invest more time in armour variety for the PC, so if you DO RP a fabulously dashing rogue or a gritty badass warrior you can look the part. Oh, and no horrific leather scullcaps on helms, good god I would prefer clipping to those.

The mods in question:

Live like Viv - Vivienne's armour.

Inquissandra - Cass' armour.

Sera's Breeches - Sera's armour.

There are more, including for men, but those are the only ones I know of and use.

I'm liking the Jaws of Hakkon dragonhunter armor so much that they're basically my Inquisitors official workwear. Starting at level 2, thanks to the Golden Nug!

Since it's the armor of the last Inquisitor they're also pretty spot on with the theme of the Inquisition. Flaming eye with sword and all that stuff.

And, once again, I am saying that they did not devote enough resources to this area of the game. Not that it isn't an invest of resources.

There are still plenty of armours in the game unavailable even for humans. Mind telling me why my human male Inquisitor can't wear the two armour sets I mentioned, both of which are displayed on human male NPC's (although im reasonably certain that you can see females in the Ferelden armour too)?

There being three sets of armour for the Inquisitor in the base game is unacceptable. Them being so visually similar, unforgivable.

Origins had three different races and a choice of gender for each, and as I said I did not have problems with the armour variety in it. Because there actually was armour variety.
