The Arcane Warrior

So, no one here should be a novice when it comes to Knight Enchanter at this point. Though, no too few of us are exactly happy or thrilled about the changes it received in Patch 11. I for one, don't actually believe said changes to be a nerf.

The Build - Active Abilities

 Spirit Blade

Our bread and butter, it used to deflect projectiles rather nicely, still can. However, a new mechanic has been added to this ability which changes how its used. As of Patch 11, Spirit Blade gains charges as we deal damage with other spells and our auto-attacks. One full round of Auto-attacks will take us from 1 charge, to 91 charges when upgraded for Amplified Blade, essentially giving us max damage.

The great thing about how the charges are calculated, is that it generates charges based on hit -- rather than cast. Given how AOE heavy Mages have always been, it makes max charging this ability easy. We now use Amplified Blade over Defending Blade.

Fade Cloak

Probably the most versatile ability we have. We can break CC with this ability, ignore damage, and deal a large amount back. This has not changed from our normal build.

Fade Step

Fade Step is a fun ability, we can use it offensively, defensively, or as a movement utility. We still take Cold Step.

Energy Barrage

With the changes to Spirit Blade, and the new passives from Trespasser, this ability is just great. We are able to generate 200 Spirit Blade Charges from one use of this ability with either upgrade.

We will take Energy Bombardment.

PersonaPreference

You can take any ability here that you prefer. Ideally, this is your 'bomb' spell. The big damager that you're trying to pump out as often as possible. I usually suggest the following:

Fire Mine

Winter's Chill

Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning

Revival

Aegis of the Rift

Not a requirement, take Dispel if you do not plan to use this build to Tank.

Barrier

You do not need an Upgrade for this ability, you need to focus on getting all of our passives first, because its a long list.

Focus Ability

Mark or Resurgence, you pick.

The Build - Passive Abilities

(Dear god this is a long list)

Guardian Spirit

Strength of Spirits

Static Charge

Gathering Storm

Conductive Current

Flashpoint

Clean Burn

Chaotic Focus (IF GOING FIRE MINE)

Winter Stillness

Mana Surge (IF GOING WINTER'S GRASP)

Frost Mastery ( IF GOING WINTER'S GRASP)

Combat Clarity

Fade Shield

Knight-Protector

Veiled Riposte

Focused Teamwork

How to Play

Use the Things as they come available and as the situation dictates. You'll be fine as long as you keep Barrier up.

SUPR SPESHUL MAGE TANK

If you get Andreste's Sacrifice, you are able to serve as your party's tank. I recommend playing said Mage Tank, as the AI doesn't logic gud.

Avoid hits, pile mobs, keep Barrier high, and pump as much damage as you can, threat will handle itself. You don't even need Andraste's Sacrifice, but the Necklace makes it so you literally cannot lose aggro.

This more or less the way i run my KE since Trespasser came out. I'd love to know what gear you carry besides AS. Great build nonetheless :D .

Well, as you can see -- I've got a Keeper's Robes on, and what looks like an Encore (it is Encore, but I got it from a Schematic Mod so it doesn't really count).

I most aimed for Crit chance and straight defense. Guard +5 on armor, and 25% heal from damage over 10 seconds are my Master Works. On my armor though, and I don't recommend it, I have a Sigil of Lyrium, which reduces my health by half but doubles my maximum Barrier strength -- which is amazing for KE, but its certainly not easy to do the DLC content with.

I don't -actually- have AS yet because I haven't reached Trespasser on that character, but I had it on another Knight Enchanter who was using the older build (double mines) and it procced -very- often, and this build deals a lot more hits per second than the old one. Right now its an Amulet of Renewal I got from Trials Rewards. Though if the Wiki is right, I can get AS from Villa Maurel, which means I'll be grabbing it tonight when I get home.

For Rings, I've just got Master Slicing, since I could get more than one. Belt is Focus for right now, but I plan on getting the Superb Pact Belts for Fire and Frost when I get to Trespasser. Because, 300 HP means I'd sacrifice very little health for the damage I'll deal -- and the Masterworks will pick me back up if I avoid outside damage (thank god for no mitigation on Barrier).

The armor doesn't matter, because we can't get offensive stats from it -- I'd go for as much Utility as you can get, of any kind. Con Magic, and Cunning are amazing for this on all accounts.

I see, for my IQ i went full on attack % and totally neglecting crit chance/crit damage which i kinda regret because it seems to deal much less dps than some crit builds, i hit consitenly around 5 to 8k on a single fire mine and 2k on a decloaking blast but somehow everthing dies pretty slowly, whereas another crit build i have melts everyone's faces on a blink but oh well.

Btw since you carry EB on your active skills you might want to try hidden blades on hit masterwork, it almost procs everytime i use it, but you probably knew that already. Thanks for sharing your build.

I do know about Nevarrite's 5 hit HB :) But this mage is a tank, and honestly, out all that people I bring, this mage deals the least damage. Which is saying something.

KE should really be using pact belts. I just spam fire mines to be honest. 23k dmg per mine, comes in batches of 3. can spam 2 vollies in 2 to 3 seconds and usually 3 set off in total giving a damage of 70k. plus EB which gives 12 times 2.5k whic is another 30k dmg which means you deal out 100k damage in a cycle of 3 seconds... that is as high as damage goes for mages, honestly. and very consistent. (nm with all trials on)

if you walk into mobs immune to fire, just use ice mine and deternate it with mind blast (again, 3 seconds mine blast mine cycle) and yes you will have to switch back to that stupid spirit blade and fade cloak for damage again. with bees masterwork you can provide a good amount of CC when you cant dealt the usual amout of fire dmg due to resistances.

No other mage can be a tank like KE and stand in front of enemies spamming fire mines on their face so frequently since you dont need to cast barrier or worry about survivability for using pact belts. and to make my already small health pool even worst, i use sigil.of lyrium as well. andrastes sacrifice is another must for KE to further enhance your mine spamming and tanking effectiveness.

What is Patch 11?  Did I miss something?  Did they fix the Chaotic Focus/Flaming Array bug?

Patch 11 was the Spirit Blade change, if I remember right.

I've come across a staff from the Trials that is called Heart of Despair. If you are building a mage to be a tank, it might be worth it to get that staff since not only does it chill all nearby enemies making them move and hit slower but also grants you 50% cold and physical damage resistance. I think it would be cool and would also guarantee that Winter's Grasp hits for 1000% weapon damage each time but I haven't tested it yet.

We already get that from Fade Step :D I sadly never got the Heart of Despair on my Mage Playthrough, but usually I'm running Fire Mine so I'm certain that it'd work great if you make use of Winter's Grasp!

Its also important to understand that Ice Armor does not affect us when we're barriered (which we should always be), as Barrier damage is calculated before mitigation. Even if Ice Armor is an exception to that rule -- it doesn't matter all that much, since our targets should be in some form of CC the entire time we're fighting -- especially if we brought Solas.

Oh the 50% physical resistance comes from the staff not Ice Armor, but I guess you are right. Since damage on barriers isn't affected by resistances the resistance would be worthless didn't think of it like that. Still it should allow you to switch Frost Step for the new upgrade that regenerates mana I'm not really sure how useful that would be, although I would expect an other staff that would compliment a crit build would be stronger.

Encore is the dominant staff in the game :) Because of all the Crit Damage you can flush it with.

SB change came in Patch 10.  I thought that was the latest patch (http://answers.ea.co...p/DAInquisition), but has there been some other update?  There are so many friggin' screwy bugs in Trespasser that I'm not playing until they fix some of them.
