How long until people realize that the gender that one chooses to play as when playing a game has no bearing on anything at all, and is probably the least interesting and least engaging topic of discussion that anyone could ever think to have?

I mean, I'm a straight white male (so, a white supremacist, misogynistic rapist according to progressives), but I didn't exactly freak out when I played as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot, or as Amanda Ripley in Alien: Isolation.

More often than most, and including this thread, females go into a thread starting with: "I'm a woman and -" or simply just stating that they are female. I really don't know what this is supposed to accomplish other than fishing for reactions. If you want to argue a point, I couldn't care less whether you are male or female just argue it, or if you think bringing up your personal information will give you more credibility.

I am for all variables of freedom of speech and criticism and I am willing to partake all forms of argument and debate. I do not appreciate it however when people shut down the idea of debate to begin with because criticism isn't "allowed"

People feel like it fits to this thread. I doubt anyone goes announcing their gender in threads about gameplay strategy or something non-gender related.

Also where did you pull out those numbers below that post, like I doubt anyone has legit stats on how many women really play DAI and how much women and men like to play opposite gender.

This thread is going on forever.

I don't even think what OP said was even offensive. He was just like, "why do people play female characters in let's plays that I watch?"

Suddenly out of nowhere, bam, gender debate.

I don't even.

I think it has move past on OP already, that tends to happen with longer threads. It's going on since people find it either interesting discussiong or heated debate.

Lol yeah I'm a straight, white female and spent all my life as a male hero in most games and loved every minute of it. Even shipped my males with the female heroines too. In Star Ocean you can pair up your human male with the cute elf girl. I'm just glad DA lets me play what I am because it's such a nice change, but I still play Zelda, or FF and other games with male protagonists. That enjoyment will never end because I love the stories, the characters, the adventures and the music. Always.

Don't call extremists of that kind "progressive", o Ventus.

As for your statement, apparently this is an interesting topic to talk about for many. I, for one, am interested to know why some people only play their own gender, since I find that limiting.

Too narrow. I can play a female character that feels like a self-insert. And I'm neither gay nor female.

Well, we are currently having a discussion that talks about how humans are animals... :P

Humans are animals. That is a fact and an irrefutable one. Do you deny this?

How the heck did you turn me saying "We're talking about how humans are animals" into "Humans are not animals" in your head?

Do we? One suspects, true, but supposition is not knowledge. How many of that supposed majority, do you think, don't try a different gender not because it destroys their self-insert fantasy, but because it simply never occurred to them? How many did try, but never managed to identify with a character of a different gender enough to feel comfortable with them? How many can play different ethnicities with ease but not different genders, different genders with ease but not different sexual orientations, and so on. I do not think it's that simple.

(As a personal example: why can I play straight romances from both sides with ease but can't identify with a gay protagonist of either gender? That's weird.)

Yeah. My primary characters in most games tend to share those features. Even more so in DAI since I haven't managed to make my second favorite hair color - white-blonde - look good.

Yeah, my canon Warden, Hawke, and Inquisitor have green eyes and dark brown hair... because I'm original :P

but I don't go into threads and tell everyone I am a straight male just to fish a reaction

I don't know which threads you're seeing, but I look at a lot of threads, and I don't see that happening at all. People almost always state their gender when it makes sense in context, like in this thread.

I can already tell who is female and male based on how they post

some men pretend to be women. It's obvious when they do it though

Sure you can.

I play everything, male or female with the following racial order; dwarves, elves, qunari, human. I never self-insert, have never played myself. I did not realise you were as ancient as you are...I thought I was old.

It's just a matter of preference on who people want to play as. If they choose to play as a female character to suit the story, that's fine. If others want to play as a male character, go ahead. I don't see a right or wrong answer.

Ancient, pah. I'm 53. :P

Also, my name is a dead giveaway. I had a good laugh when DAI came out. "Ieldra" means "Elder One" in Old English.

As for self-inserting, my primary characters tend to share some of my values. For instance, I might be able to play a religious zealot, but it would feel more like work than play, and my devout Andrastian Human Noble of DAO refused to stay that way.

BTW, can I have some of your cake? It's one of my favorites.

As for your statement, apparently this is an interesting topic to talk about for many. I, for one, am interested to know why some people only play their own gender, since I find that limiting.

For me the main reasons why, given the option, I will always play as a woman are:

-I've simply always related better to girls (which isn't terribly surprising), and I want to be able to relate to my protagonist to have a deeper, more personal, more emotional story.

- Variety. I've played a lot of games as a male hero and seen a lot of movies with a male lead, etc, so I want to mix things up when I can.

However, if I were a man, the variety reason would still work in the same direction, and I would probably play female characters when I could anyway. So that reason isn't because I prefer to stick to my own gender, since it would apply regardless. As for whether I'd still relate to girls better if I were a guy, I can't say.

(As a personal example: why can I play straight romances from both sides with ease but can't identify with a gay protagonist of either gender? That's weird.)

That makes sense to me. If you are straight, it's only natural to find straight romances the most relatable, regardless of if you're put into the shoes of the man or the woman (you might even shift your viewpoint between the two characters as well). Not that that will apply to everyone, I'm just saying I understand. For me, the least relatable combo is a straight romance in the shoes of a male. Can't wrap my head around it. I'd be more likely to play a gay guy, for whatever reason, even though I'm not attracted to guys at all.

Recently however, I went out of my comfort-zone and tried romancing Cullen (no regrets), and found that more relatable. Why? I'm honestly not sure. Is it just because I'm still in the shoes of a woman, who I can better relate to? I still can't quite wrap my head around my own character loving Cullen, since I can't wrap my head around loving a man, even though I think he's great, adorable, and looks nice. So, to answer your question: I don't know, but we're all weird :P

I have to say I find quite strange how much is still for some players hard to believe people may like to play female characters. Expecially because is nothing new a female lead.

And I found really important the lack of female protagonists only later in my gamer career. I've started playng with my cousin at the Sega Megadrive Mastersystem, and later (after a long war with my parents) I buyed my very first PS1.

For a time I played there, but with mostly very cute/cartoonish characters (Spyro, Crash, Donald Duck), so I never felt all this male/female protagonist. Simple characters, males but not even human like.

Later my parents buyed a PC, and I started playng point and click adventures. Many of these games had a female protagonist, or both a male and female lead that alternate during the game.

Than later while I started playng more action/GDR/console games and there were less and less new point and click adventures around, I felt the lack of a female protagonist. And than I ended up playng Baldur's Gate 2. From that moment, I started looking for games that let me choose to play a female protagonist. Because, quite frankly, even if I love many games with a male protagonist (Kingdom Hearts, Uncharted, InFamous, Jak and Daxter etc...) I really missed those intelligent and strong girls who could resolve situations and let me feel that little plus of affinity that I can actually feel only with a female lead.

I play often male characters too in games like DA and ME, but always after I had my run with the female one. And admittedly, (and I know I'm not the only player that felt a little bored by it) male protagonists in the last years have been all quite similar, aestetically speaking, to one another. All short dark hair with stubble. Is a little...boring. So I can see why even some male players can have this desire to make a female character, expecially for gameplays. It make visually the character already more different and original that the usual videogame protagonist.

I get the impression that most guys who think "women don't play videogames! Shock! Scandal! Lies!" Don't know many women in real life. What's strange to me is that the very idea makes them spitting mad.

Or at least a diverse group of women. But yeah, that's the really weird part. They can be surprised, I suppose, but why the hostility? It's bizarre.
