No, he's an MRA dude who's into evolutionary psych or whatever crap. He had a chick cheat on him once, and it clearly made him mental.

"Cassandra is a man" dude is ArianaGBSA at the moment.

Not an MRA, not even close. You have no clue.

I can't believe some people are seeing an increase in the female gamer market and then, in the same sentence, saying Bioware should go back  to catering to a male audience. Like for real bro? This is a good thing. Tapping a new market is a good thing. Especially since you don't lose your previous one, except for the few who storm off in a huff because not everything is about them anymore (they'll learn tho, not everything is about them anywhere anymore), you just expand. Broaden your horizons. If you can improve and iterate it just gets better.

Bioware (and EA) is actually showing a surprising amount of foresight for gaming companies. By catering to (I use that phrase loosely) a new market (and building it by showing representation is actually present for those interested) they're planting a whole new cash crop. And a loyal one too.

It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, companies get sweet filthy lucre and the marginalized and previously marginalized get the representation 'everyone' else has had up to this point.

You know, this "discussion" about the need for some to create characters who are clones of themselves always make me want to play "If I were"

If I were:

  • Like my main Warden, I would be a ruthless social climber who enjoys beating into submission every person who ever-so-slightly annoys me.
  • Like my Shepard, I would have had a short military career that would have concluded by a dishonorable discharge and I would currently be a private military contractor whose amount of damage would make Daesh look downward restrained by comparison
  • Like my Shadowrun Returns character I would be a corporate shill working as a "consultant" to explain one percenters how to best crush the skulls of the uppity plebs who dare protest their rule.
  • Like my Dragonfall character I would be a paternalistic politician pretending to be a anarcho-syndicalist
  • Like most of my Geneforge characters, I would believe that slavery isn't so bad since I'm oh so obviously smarter than my servants.
  • Like my Persona 3 protagonist, I'd be a teenage pimp.

My point is, why should I spend dozens if not hundreds of hours watching a character on screen who's a copy of boring old Me?

Oh, the ROLLplaying guy. You cats have all melded into a single gestalt supertrolly in my head.

Yes, but some things change, like Trespasser making DAI my favorite DA game. I mean, I wouldn't say game, I would say story, because game mechanics are still 140% action game no RPG but with Trespasser they made the story personal, made the Inquisitor feel human, and made it so ****** wonderful and epic that Thedas became worthy living in again. So unlike any other "troll", since as I said before thousand times before I am not, I am just honestly insane, if Bioware redeems itsef, like with Trepasser, I admit it. I am freaking loving the game now, since Trespasser I played like 12~16 hours/day.

And my problem with females in DAverse or Biowareverse exist, but unlike the "Cassandra is a man guy" which sometimes I joke about (people seem to take it seriously) is only regarding PC characters. In Mass Effect Andromeda thread I said they could make the galaxy with black, bald and fat women, ALL NPCs like that, no problem at all, I don't really care about NPCs, but I really need MY CHARACTER to have ultra feminine clothes, to the point of ridiculousness and complete impossibility of action and hollywood standards of beauty and femininity. Calm down, I know Bioware won't let me dress like that in their games but clothes like "Taken Shape" armor from trespasser or Vivienne clothes are enough for me in DAverse, I understand that's the best they going to offer me, I just wish they didn't release it so late, I had to make my official playthrough after trespasser (I need o wear the armor from beginning [lv 3 in haven]) because only now I had the clothing to have my true character.

This. When I was in elementary school, the first Nintendo came out and I played Mario, Zelda and a few other games. Loved those games and spent hours with them. As I grew older and my tastes matured, I lost interest in gaming. It wasn't due to not liking games anymore as I still loved board games and the like. But, I was completely alienated by how women were represented in most games. I didn't realize it at the time, but the sexualized depictions of women turned me away from the games. I also didn't like not being able to play as a woman. I felt like video games were made for guys and I was right about that. Video games weren't made with my perspective taken into account so I spent my entertainment dollars on other media.

About 5 years ago, I gave gaming another chance after getting a Wii and enjoying some of the updated versions of the old school games that I loved. Eventually, I found Mass Effect  and played that on my husband's PS3.I fell in live with Mass Effect and felt like I'd finally found games that we're made with my perspective taken into account. I tried out DA and loved it as well. I started looking around for other games that allowed me to role play as a woman and that didn't have offensive portrayals of women and minorities and found that I liked what Bethesda had on offer as well. I'm still a bigger fan of BW but enjoy Skyrim and Fallout. And, that's it. Those are the only RPG games that appeal to me. I occasionally play Mario, Zelda and Legos but those games aren't part of the RPG market.

So, point is, appealing to gamers like me who are usually ignored is a great business strategy. I'm very loyal to Bioware as almost no other gaming company gives me what I'm looking for in a game. I would not be buying RPG's from other franchises if BW didn't exist. I would just simply not play RPGs and my entertainment dollars would go elsewhere. Not catering to me and others only makes the market smaller. Even if women only make up 30% of BW's market, which I doubt, there probably aren't enough dudes to make up for our loss if BW went out of their way to offend women and other minorities. I know the MRA types are loud and proud on this forum, but they are not the majority.

On a slightly different note, the video game industry has given itself a bad rep among a lot of women of my generation. The stereotypes surrounding women that other gaming companies still latch onto aren't helping their images. That's a big part of the reason I don't get into my gaming habits with women that I don't know very well. I don't feel like having to defend it from the judgements that inevitably come my way, at least not when I'm getting to know someone.

Different people get different things out of gaming. There is nothing wrong with that.

You prefer to full-on role-play a character you've made up. That's totally reasonable. I do the same... in my second and subsequent playthroughs.

I do, however, completely understand people who enjoy playing "self-inserts". It's a wish fulfillment thing. Or a "play pretend" thing. I consider it no different than when I was a kid running around in my backyard with a garbage can lid on my arm for a shield and holding a stick for a sword and pretending I was Ser Tiffany the Gallant Do-Gooder White Knight. Real Kid Tiffany was cool, but kinda boring. She was a nerd who liked to cram her nose in books, learn things, and play video games. But she could go outside, put on a few props, and be a super-hero.

Real Adult Tiffany can still do that. It's a bit more expensive, if I wanted to get full armor and weapons and had a local Society for Creative Anachronism (the people who put on medieval or renaissance faires) to play in. I could still be Ser Tiffany the Gallant Do-Gooder White Knight. But it's far more convenient and less expensive for me to do this digitally, and video games with character creators allow me to do that... and to go even farther. I tend to never play humans because I'm a human and I find that boring. But I'll take an elf or a dwarf or a Khajiit or an Argonian, make a character I feel represents me in that fantasy world, and I proceed to spend my first playthrough playing that character like a personal avatar... what would Real Tiffany do if she were an elf in the Dragon Age universe? Who would I help? What choices would I make on quests? It's simply wish-fulfillment to take a break from real life and feel like a cool hero, instead of Real Tiffany That Sells Advertising For A Living And Spends Her Weekends Gaming And Watching Football.

The posts you used to make at the old BSN only parroted MRA arguments word-for-word. But you're not actually an MRA... Well damn, muh bad. I get it, it's like when hipsters try to distance themselves from other hipsters. Labels, man!

haha! Yeah, just own it. I see too many dudes on here spouting spouting MRA rhetoric but disowning the label. I just have to laugh when those same MRA types sputter in rage and throw out an "You, SJW, you" as if I should recoil in horror. I just own it. Yep, I'm an SJW, and? Kind of deflates them a bit. But honestly, what's so horrible about being a person that gives a damn about social justice?

ETA: I don't really care about an answer to that last question, btw. It's rhetorical.

Aside from DAII, I always choose the sex of my character based on romance options. Wanted Morrigan so I was a male, wanted Cassandra so I was male. Hawke was a female to change it up. Even in ME, I wanted Garrus so I was FemShep. Oh, and I'm male.

Goes for hawke , and origins. I watch the videos on youtube everyone not just DA: I wants to play female it seems.

Something im missing? Figured if you play a game you would imagine that the character was you hence role playing right?

Or maybe im paranoid and missing something.

Here are some reasons why:

Many females like playing Dragon age

Some guys wanted to romance Sera

I'm pretty sure that covers it. I'm female and like playing female.

That made me laugh as well. One of the reason I never played Witcher3 was because I never wanted to see creepy rape scenes. Bioware expanding their market is what companies try to do.

Oh, really? I've avoided the Witcher series as I have no desire to play a man that collects 'cards' for all the women he sleeps with. Ew. I didn't know there were also rape scenes. Keep that game away from me. And, this is reason 101 why I appreciate Bioware and their efforts.

I played the Wither 3 (and liked it but not more than DAI) and no Geralt doesn't rape anyone. Can we not do this?

Like any fantasy game is real.

Oh yeah in that case there's plenty.

Yeah I'm not overly fond of having it shoved in my face either but BW does have rape in their games (Isabela, Fenris, Zevran, Leliana, Broodmother, the tranquil, etc.) so I'm fine with it in the story. *shrug*

No. From my recollection it's the same (well a bit more blunt) as BioWare games. Mentions nothing more. You're not actually seeing someone get raped on screen.
