Can someone explain what the purpose in getting the achievement points attached to getting all the shiny medals. Does it unlock anything or what? Any help in this would be beneficial. Thanks

I assume you're talking about the PC version of the game. If you were playing the XBox version, you'd probably already know
Achievements are just kind of a fad thats appeared in the last few years of video gaming. Its something you can either take part in, or ignore, at your leisure. The points and unlocks themselves really don't mean anything in DA:O, but I find it fun to unlock the things.
Some games, like Mass Effect, actually give you meta-game bonuses for unlocking achievements, but DA:O is one of the ones that doesn't.
In DA:O its kind of helpful to the story, since its such a big game with lots of options, it helps you keep track of whether you've explored many of the game's major plot elements.

Thanks for the answer, with the PC version that I have it would be nice to be able to unlock something with those points though

They're just annoying if you ask me. Makes me feel like I am competing with someone instead of enjoying the game experience.

I used to feel that way. Then I realized I could just ignore the number.

Slightly off topic, but so far, the only company I've seen reward players through achievements is Ubisoft. In Assassin's Creed 2, you were able to purchase upgrades and costumes with the points received from achievements.

I enjoy it. After I played through DAO a few times, I still wanted to play it again, but really had nothing left to do (that I could think of). Achievements gave me some direction and insight on what else I could do in the game. It's also just fun to collect them and try to get them all for a game. I like how no one really cares how many you have, its a personal thing whether you participate or not.

I love Achievements! I think they give a lot of games even more replay value and it's fun to compete with friends.

Since different achievements have different point values, you could have the same number of achievements as someone else but have a different achievement score. So, the score is really just another way to compare your game with your friends/enemies, if you like doing that sort of thing.
It's only confusing because there's so many "points" around these days, some of which are legit currency for specific platforms.

As the popular song already says:
Achievments! huh-yeah
What are they good for?
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
Achievments! huh-yeah
What are they good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again y'all
Achievements! huh good Maker
What are they good for?
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

Pretty much as above. I look at the number of achievements I've got and it lets me see what I need to experience in the game (for example I've not actually completed the Mage origin story yet). They're also challenges (sometimes) that the developers have set to keep you playing the game that bit longer (so DA:O's "Kill 1000 Darkspawn" achievement could be an example of this) or they're something to aim for. It's a really silly thing but it works and has done since the Xbox. If you get a shiny new weapon, it's often like "OK, cool", but if you get an achievement for it? It's like "Well done! You got it!" and sometimes you feel good about yourself.
And of course it's also a willy waving thing, but I don't think it happens too much with PC gaming. Talking of achievements, GTA IV owes me a bunch...
