True.  But on the other hand, hard cover offers DR if you have to take the hit.  It also seems that the DR reduces DoT damage after the fact (e.g. if you get warped by a banshee and then take cover).

I've asked the DoT question before. It does lessen DoT damage. Even if you take cover after you've been hit with the dot. Each tick is calculated independently.

Saved my life a few times over since then, and is almost automatic reflex now.

No. Go straight to Platinum.

Why else would BW make the initial search Plat/Collectors?  It's meant to be.  Go leach.

This game's almost dead anyways...

But it's not, lol.  It's amazing how long things can be almost dead for.  Yet every day it lives on, it's life expectancy increases...

1. You eventually start relying more on right hand advantage and realize that the ability to stick to cover usually only exists to get you killed by banshees.
2. You start running for ammo boxes on instinct rather than having to stop and think about where they are.
3. You become more concerned about the wave 10 objective and extraction seems like a bonus rather than a goal. There's been times that we've intentionally wiped after the wave 10 objective rather than risk a disconnect.
4. One glance at your squad's formation gives you a pretty good idea of where the enemies will spawn at the start of a wave.
5. You learn how to "safely" approach instant-kill enemies without getting grabbed.

On an aside, I wanted to go one step further than just a [Like] and say, I wish I had read this when I first started playing. I might not have understood most of it when I first started, but it would've sparked the right questions. Like, "What is right hand advantage?" or "I thought Extraction was the MOSTEST IMPORTANT!?"

...Although #5 still eludes me when I'm busy bonking with my Paladin shield and a Banshee decides she wants in on the fun. Oh we'll dance you cantankerous wench, lag be damned.

I had a system back when I was new. If I could extract 3 times in a row on bronze then I'd move up to silver. If I could extract 3 times in a row on silver then I'd move up to gold. Etc, etc... I'd go back one difficulty for each failure.

As for general signs to look out for...

This is very good

This is not supposed to be a tread for newbeees about MP tactics. The short version about this is L2P, and I'm OK with that.

I would like to adress the critisism of inexperienced (Pug)players advancing too quickly and/or leeching credits on higher levels. If you're in the lobby with somone  who says "I just got my 1st UR weapon - lets go gold" then the frustation is fully justified, but there are no clear cut indicators.

I would say before advancing to silver
-  get to know the map layouts (ammo supplies, choke points, hazards etc.)
- understand the mechanics of tech and biotic combos
- avoid "head in hands" situations (plenty of those described in this forum)

I have about 80 hours of ME MP experience so I will make no asumptions on when to advance to gold and platinum. If you seasoned players have any advice, it would be much appreciated.

On a personal note I've solo'ed bronze af few times and feel comfortable on silver with 3-4 character builds (unlocked half of them). I've also survived some gold runs without constantly bleeding out, but only because of some very capable/helpful/understanding/forgiving teammates. That should be an indicator that I'm not ready for gold yet.

Next for me: Practice cancel reloads. Get a mic for my PC.

Hand me the paddle because I'm in the same boat.

About 80 hours of MP, and while bronze is easy I still die on silver but I've got by with my better kits on gold.(low score but I survived and wasn't dying too often)  Then again some days I die left and right on silver.  Lag, tired, the stars are in alignment to take me down..

There is a transitioning to gold video in the resources sticky.  I found it helpful.

You are allowed to move.  Don't be that guy who stands there getting downed in the same spot over and over and over again because he sees an enemy and cannot move from that spot until he has killed that enemy.

Realize that you don't have to kill every enemy you see the moment you see it, this means prioritizing your own location before killing enemies, and even prioritizing enemies.  Just because you were shooting that Scion, doesn't mean you can't shoot the Collector Captain that just showed up until you have killed the Scion.  Change your target to the Captain instead, unless the Scion is almost dead.  Use good judgement here.

If you are getting shot, and you don't even know what is shooting you, don't just stand there spinning around trying to figure out what it is that is shooting you.  MOVE.  Look later.  If you are in a bad situation, get out of it.

A good rule of thumb when you are soloing is that if there are more than 2 enemies in your vicinity, you might want to move.  This can also apply as you are moving around the map independantly of the other team members.

Keep moving forward.  Going back the way you came will sometimes lead you right into an ambush.  It can be just as bad as not moving at all.

Soft Cover/Right Hand Advantage is easy to find all over the place.  As you keep moving forward around the map, make use of whatever RHA locations are available whenever you see an enemy.  If you see an enemy and are not near a RHA location, first move to a RHA location.

I'm probably sounding like a broken record here, as most of these are just fancy ways of saying move forward and use RHA.

Conrad Verner is a wonderful role model.  Live on the edge, with nothing to lose.  Do whatever it takes to get the job done!

This is something I've been wrestling a lot with as a newbee: Usually it goes - getting shot at - PANIC - RUN - into a group of enemies on your blind side - bleeding out with little to no chance for my teammates to revive me because I'm being swarmed. Gel myself pointless because of being swarmed.

Keep an eye on your HUD when taking fire - it will tell you what enemies are actually hitting you.  Instead of running away, try to slightly reposition yourself so that there is cover between the you and the enemies that were just hitting you.  It all comes with experience, but if you watch some of the solos on here, you'll see how players (esp. on glacier) can dispatch an entire wave by slightly repositioning themselves around a single piece of cover.

Guess a serious answer is in order this time. Prioritizing targets will make your life easier. For me the big three are Ravagers, Scions, and the most hated mofos in the entire game...Cerb Engineers. Seriously, those guys need to go ASAP. Dual Primes and the dancing quadruplets can (and do) eat rockets every now and then and I don't feel guilty for one second after letting one fly. Wave 11 is not when you should be letting rockets loose. If you're that far behind by wave 11 you ain't gonna catch up. Unless you're FTFTL. He's a special case and likes rockets on wave 11.

Opportunistic spawn nuking has its place, too. If I happen to go sailing around a corner at the start of a wave and there's a logjam of death hellbent on murdering me and the rest of team - rocket. Kill streaks happen and you shouldn't look a gift nuking in the mouth.

When you find Bronze boring, go to Silver.

When you find Silver boring, go to Gold.

I'd second this.  When you take a step up use your most powerful kits/those you're most comfortable with, until you've learnt how that level works, and when you start playing gold or platinum make sure you have some form of armour piercing equipped (AP ammo, piercing mods etc).

3. You become more concerned about the wave 10 objective and extraction seems like a bonus rather than a goal.

From a credit payout point of view, this is completely correct of course.  From a role-playing point of view, not so much.  Speaking purely personally, I'm disappointed if I don't see the Mission Successful screen at the end of the game; because it means the plucky team of warriors didn't complete their goal.  So I think that point is subjective, depending on what the player wants from the game.

My own opinion: play at a level in which:

  1. you're having fun;
  2. you don't feel that you're spoiling the other players' fun.

A piece of advice I was given by one of the old hands when I started playing Gold: you don't have to backpack the game in order to play it.  If you decide to play a higher level, but land in a weak lobby and wipe after a few waves, don't feel like it was all on you.  It's a game for four players, and everyone has to pull some weight.  As long as you're pulling some weight, you're doing it right.

Just to reiterate a few points made here.

RHA. It is 100% true that magnetic cover kills. Almost all the time, a mic call of "Stuck to cover!" is followed by "Squadmate in trouble" or "Squadmate bled to death".

Strategic spawn-nuking GREATLY speeds up the game. Just make sure you have nukes left for Wave 10 Objective.

Solos prepare you for the inevitable carry, but PUGging a level you can solo is boring. Challenge yourself, but go in prepared. If you can only carry 2 nukes and 2 medigel (like my alt), Gold can blindside you badly, even if you know what you are doing. Carrying atleast 4 nukes/ops/revives will give you a lot more freedom in moving up in the difficulties.

Never run to your blindside, ambushes WILL happen, and can down you even on bronze. Even if you see 1 or 2 enemies in front of you, if you need to run, that is the way to go. Usually, a quick dodge in the direction of some cover that will protect you from the direction of the hits will be sufficient though, however, when the enemies group up, you MUST leave (or nuke, preferably leave). That said, DO NOT GET EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO YOUR MISSILES! Let them go, fire them during clusterfrelled objectives, save teammates from banshee-hugs with them...

v Do not do this until you get better v

This is a fun way of pushing forward, but shouldn't be attempted until you are VERY comfortable with your damage output, but I often find myself (EVen as a Volus) rushing around the map slaughtering everything that I CAN (can't always get them all quickly enough), not stopping for that one enemy who dodged too many shots because I've been kiting a banshee through this whole exercise. I was doing this the other day, and my friend is like "Dude, there's a banshee behind you!" and I'm "I know, I've been kiting her all wave". Often, I'll do this just to drop the banshee on my "team" to force them to help with her, other times, I will try to keep her away from them whilst I do it (The latter is more difficult).

^ Do not do that when moving up difficulties. ^

The above is not a great strategy, but it is a FUN strategy. Oddly enough, it is a strategy that I learnt as a Juggernaut, because banshee's took forever to kill, and Ravagers and Brutes die to Fire Explosions nicely.

Another thing I don't see mentioned in here : when retreating from an area and you have enemies shooting you from behind, run in a zig zag pattern. It makes it much harder for them to actually hit you....except for those lolwarpballs and lolatlashomingrockets.

back when I was still learning, I based my 'readiness progression' on completion time and scoreboard (consistently placed first or second). I considered myself ready to move up when, with a nearly full or full team and without using up all consumables, I managed to extract in 10-15 minutes (bronze) or 15-20 minutes (silver) for 10 consecutive games. From gold to platinum was a bit trickier though. I thought I was ready when I could extract in 20 minutes for at least a fifty or so games - but I did not expect the "throw everything at yo face" move. Cue getting skulled half a minute in. I went back to gold until I was confident I could carry the team when the situation called for. Then I tried platinum again. Still not an expert or anything but at least I could carry my own weight now, with my fav kits.

I realise this might not be a very reliable self-assessing method anymore though, seeing how good most players are lately, newcomers might not be able to compete against vets who might just want a bit of fun with bronze and/or silver.

Learning curve is fun. I still remember the feeling of adrenaline rushing through me when I realised everyone in my team went down and the noobie me had to try to      survive on silver and gold (and of course I failed). Now it's not the same. My advice would most likely be - savouring the experience while it lasts. Creds are only good for maxing manifests anyway. The cheaper packs are more than enough until halfway through gold.

Once you max Armored Compartments, you need to move up to Platinum.  Then rocket-farm Glacier until your manifest is maxed, and then you can move to Gold. :)

Here's a tip, scientific in nature, based on a pug lobby I landed in last night, where there was a solitary piece of gear and possibly a single AR1 amp between the other three players, whose combined N7 ranking didn't make it into 3 figures - if you have to buy a Recruit Pack simply to have a single gel and are delighted to get a missile as well, you're playing Unknown Geth, and landing on Ghost Hazard for the very first time, only to discover that the rain, like, harms you - you shouldn't be playing on Gold. I don't quit many games, and I did suffer a couple of waves, but sometimes life's just too short.

Play whatever level you have most fun on, not by natural extension the level which just might earn you enough credits for some Cryo IV.
