Probably one should drop a line when it not a good time to move up:
- When you are low on both credits and consumables and hoped to be curried cheap cheap
- when u had a bad hairdo day and the dog have not been walked/ mother-in-law is visting.
- have only one hammer in the toolbox that you're good with- (ok, but some bad ass bad habits grows there)
- still have achille's heels ( trouble to kill a dragoon, phantom, pyro, ) longer than say 5 s (insert any other arbritary number here).
- have mental problems with consistently being numero quattro on the list.
- have self righeous / non tolerant DAWG's in the lobby - out flies the fun.

I would also point out (as eluded to by a couple other posters) that the state of your manifest should be a major factor in determining when to increase your challenge.
A developed manifest is a HUGE factor for determining how well you will do at higher difficulties. Use consumables for Gold+, especially an ammo consumable. Also make sure you have good armor mitigation, either with your kits powers, or your weapons.
Taking a Locust with no armor piercing or AP ammo into Gold on a weapon kit will render you useless vs big armor units. You won't be able to hurt them.
I personally witnessed this in a Gold match on an alt account (I was using a L20 HA with only 2 gels - wave 9 I went down, had 1 gel left, and got one of those funky camera angles where you can't see anything and gambled that one of my team would revive me before I got stomped on - huge error on my part). 2 other players got downed and bled out, leaving the least experienced player in our group to try to clutch the wave vs the last remaining unit, a Banshee .. they couldn't do it. After over 10 minutes of trying to avoid the Banshee and shoot at it, they were eventually syncd. They had no capability to hurt the Banshees armor.
Moral of this story is to be prepared to damage boss units, and this requires a plan to defeat big armor units

I once dodged a lolatlasrocket. True story!
Stupid cerberus atlas operator forgot to press the "Cheat" button, I guess. Too bad Geth Rocket Cheaters never make that mistake.

I had a similar experience a while ago, although the weapon wasn't the problem - it was player skill. One PUG, left alone against the last Banshee of the wave, spent about 10 minutes trying to kill it and then eventually gave up and intentionally got himself synced. The problem is - this guy was fully capable. He was running a Level 20 Talon Merc with a Widow I. Not an ideal setup, but you should be able to kill a Banshee reasonably quickly. He just could not get it though - firing a couple of times at the Banshee with his Widow, launching some arrows (many of which were negated by the hand of denial) and then running waaaay too far away, giving the Banshee time to recharge her barrier. Over. And. Over.
The other moral of the story is: Don't jump up a level unless you can comfortably take down a boss enemy by yourself.

This reminds me of the time I bled out and saw a guy get sync killed by a Geth Prime. It still deeply disturbs me to this day.I had a similar experience a while ago, although the weapon wasn't the problem - it was player skill. The only manifest changes that matter are medigel/missile capacity.
Player skill is the only factor beyond that. Human Adepts, Sentinels, and Engineers (to a lesser degree) can all dish out some serious damage if used correctly (or constantly bleed out if used incorrectly). Available Characters and Weapons are not the limiting factor.
I've PUGed a few Gold games on my alt account, mostly as Adepts. But the problem remains when left to carry, 2 missiles, and 2 medigel do not last long. And believe me, when you PUG, you will carry. You might have a few good games, but you will inevitably end up carrying eventually.
I hate that I am saying this, but when I PUG gold on my alt account, I hope for a PUGgernaut who can stay on their feet (not all of them can do this, and I can't understand what they are doing wrong), because a PUGgernaut will pile up the enemies in close proximity by failing to kill them, and a Warp+Shockwave or (better yet) Singularity + Shockwave will destroy everything that piles up around them. On my main account, they just slow the game down (and usually do nothing, and achieve nothing) because they usually never get to see an enemy, and usually don't bother to show up for objectives.
TL;DR Get good with basic humans (especially Adepts), and stock up some Missile/Medigel capacity. If you have any clue about explosions, Silver is easy money. Problem is carrying on Gold, if you can't do that, don't PUG gold, stay on Silver, or find a Friend (here is a good place to look) to help you carry, 2 semi-decent players is enough to carry PUGs, regardless of manifest state.
PS: Don't forget to have fun.

If it is Collectors, I fire a missile at the Jug and get a killstreak, a revive, and gloating rights, all at once

sounds like this guy would have problems with a silver Banshee, too.

well i remember i started playing gold after a few days. but i guess i was lucky. my first n7 pack (what was the name i can't remember) unlocked me the crusader. and my first few spectre packs unlocked the Krogan Soldier and the Typhoon. So i was rolling gold after day 3 with a No Carnage Krogan soldier with Crusader and Typhoon. At that point i didn't even know people can have more then 2 medigels, and i just played cautious. I don't remember i was ever kicked from a lobby (pug).

This thread is packed full of useful advice. I'm so glad I never received any of it in time for it to affect my own progression.
I see all of these helpful answers, none of which are packed with sarcasm and intended to belittle the OP...and for the first time, I think maybe the game is dying. DX
