I mentioned this in the Winter Rift Mage thread, but I didn't want to spam that thread with screenshots, so I put them here.

A nice side benefit of the new Ice Array upgrade for Ice Mine is that it extends the area that Ice Armor is active. With sufficient cooldown reduction, you can spam Ice Array and basically give yourself a near constant 50% damage reduction buff!

These screenshots show how far away you can get from the Ice Mines and still have the Ice Armor active. Not that it matters that much, since you can just recast it.

Furthermore it sometimes bugs out and you have armour constantly even if you are not in any near vicinity of the mines. Ice mine is great as it is cheap has quick cooldown and with upgrade like a whole mob of enemies instantly. Better option than blizzard most of the time.

Yes and what about a Melee winter rift mage?

Tidarion blade and new upgrade of veilstrike can make it work

Yeah, I had that happen once but couldn't force it to happen again. Too bad it was right AFTER fighting a big mob in Descent.

That is exactly what I am playing now. So far it is working great. Ice Armor synergizes very well with guard generating masterworks to make you just as durable as any KE. The only thing I miss is Fade Cloak, but shatter combos with Stone Fist makes up for it. I honestly feel much more like an Arcane Warrior with this build than with my KE.

Yeah I turned vivienne into an ice KE. She's indestructible now. Literally.

The only problem is that Tidarion blade has the same damage of a staff but the attack speed is lower (like a 2h weapon) so you have very low DPS

Spirit blade does 50% damage more and spirit is better than all other elements

With a Between RM mana regen, a cooldown amulet, and a few quick cooldown spells I find myself rarely needing to use the sword, it is more there for flavor at this point. I will say that even with the Stonefist shatter, I am pretty sure I am doing more DPS with my Winter Knight Enchanter. With that build I can use my Enhanced Belt of the Winter Pact while still tanking with Andraste's Sacrifice, With the RM I use Ring of Doubt and boost damage by abusing crits on spells rather than straight up melting them.

At high levels with pact belts flame array followed by ice array (lock fools up) followed by flame array again after it is off cooldown = everything dead (if the first flame array did not kill them).

You don't need anything else really but it can get repetitive like the old spirit blade spam. Throw in a lightning cage to lock group enemies up for flavour and you're golden .

One does not require Ice Array; the base Ice Mine does the same thing when placed at the feet of the Inq like a Glyph. As I like to have 360 degree protection from opponents that are able to move more swiftly then myself, this has been a lifesaver throughout the game.

Saving the skill point is the only advantage, though, if you are putting it at your feet. You can do the same thing with Ice Array, since it's just 3 Ice Mines.

I have Solas specced as Ice Mage and it bugs on him all the time. It's kinda cool, it really helps if he's ambushed (I'm looking at you, Lyrium Smugglers). Tho the sound it makes becomes quite annoying after a while...

From what I see of the upgrade, either version is worth taking at some point. One may either summon three Glyphs, and step into the middle one and have extras guarding the flanks, or have one that removes 100% armor from trapped foes.

But one can also get the Ice Armor effect from the base Mine, so the upgrade is perhaps not as vital as some other choices at that time.
