Not sure if this should be in the "spoilers" section...

I only recently (a month or so ago) returned to the DAverse (more specifically the BW forum) as an active participant, and I've noticed that there hasn't been much piping up in the threads by "Bioware employee" folks since Dec, 2014. It made sense that they were active pre-release, building anticipation of DAI, and also immediately post-release, particularly regarding responsiveness to game or companion bugs or explaining companion character development.

But since then they seem to have kept mum. I know they're kept in strict observance of non-divulgence policies (even laws) regarding DA content, but still... don't they love us anymore?

*puts on his most adorable Puss-in-Boots face as if impersonating a wounded "Ser Pounce a Lot"*

Maybe I've just missed recent BW comments. There was a Gaider comment on a thread recently, I admit...

The inhabitants of BSN are like rabid wolves and pounce on any dev brave enough to show his or her face.

In general we tend to be argumentative and bullheaded, as you can see through the frequent ugly debates that go on in these forums. Not a very conducive environment to get feedback if everyone is so entrenched in their views that no one can be persuaded of anything.

Though I do think they read the forums occasionally.

Perhaps they got the memo and decided that not showing up was better for their mental health

Haha... I can't imagine being a dev- particularly of the DA series- and not be interested in the sorts of discussions the game generates. It's just too rich a storyline not to wonder how players might react over the long run. It might certainly be disheartening in some threads, but, well, I still wonder...

EDIT:

Besides, that article was from 2011. Things are way different now! (lol)

FURTHER EDIT:

Thanks for that link. Great article!

It's pretty much because the majority (or at least the most vocal) of the people here are douches who love complaining, making racist/sexist comments, and other random nonsense. Just look at any of the instances where dev's have actually posted, within a few posts someone will insult them, or the company, or the game. These forums have become home to people who enjoy yelling SJW every few hours, complaining (over and over) about ME3 endings or DAI endings or any design choice, and just general grumbling.

Somehow the universe turned on its head and Reddit is actually where I find a lot more reasonable conversation. It's probably due to the Reddit's ability to hide posts that get a low score, it makes trolling harder (people down vote you and then the post is invisible). But it is a strange world we inhabit.

This forum is far from "toxic". It's one of the most pleasant places on the internet. It's the only place I go, in fact. There will always be some idiots who exaggerate and make hurtful comments. You'd think the developers would know that goes with the territory. They could have some pretty cool discussions with us if they just ignored the idiots got the moderators to help deal with them.

A toxic vocal minority is not a good enough for such a lack of interaction in my opinion. Do they have to come here? Of course not. But it rubs me the wrong way to see so much activity before release, and almost none after, when you can actually discuss the work. It screams "Build hype now. After launch, those people don't matter. Oh, and don't forget to go on twitter and reddit though!" <_<

When I first played the game I'd say to put 50 snipers protecting them if they ever got near me, and of course shoot me on sight. Now Bioware devs are dead to me, I have no interest in any interaction, positive or negative. I know I can't expect anything good from them. I acknowledge Trespasser as a masterpiece but gameplaywise it is clear they are going for action and action is completely unforgivable in an RPG. The reason I was hurt is because with Inquisition videos and interviews they made me believe it would be a RPG but then they released a 100% action game. They can't hurt me anymore because even after Trespasser, no matter what they say I will never believe them again. Now that even Sword Coast Legends is spoiled by action ****, Pillars of Eternity is officialy the last RPG of mankind. But the point is, I can't be hurt anymore because there is no expectations anymore.

Things would go a lot easier for them if they didn't lie. If instead of saying "we are going balancing between DAO and DA2" they said "we are getting the worse of everything we ever made and on top of that creating a combat system completely different from DAO and DA2, and infinitely worse than both at that, a tactical cam unable to handle obstalcles, there are a lot of them mind you, thus impossible to use, a lifeless PC with no facial expression, complete lack of character build and development and make sure we are stripping anything that made our games interesting, ever".

I don't know what is more sad, if it is me taking 5 years to realize they used DAO as bait for their future **** or if it is their complete lack of empathy and psychopath level straight face lying about the game. But 5 years was enough of dumbness and expectation. Bioware is dead, let's see if Obsidian can last another game... RPG is dying (well since there is only one game left I'd say dead), but I'm past hatred stage now it is just a fact I can't fight (except by keeping on making games to myself on RPG Maker, which I love).

But again, I blame them for half the toxicity they complain about. If they said in DAI I would have to jump to collect shards it would be impossible for me hate them and make my hateful posts because I would have never expected anything from the game in first place. But only half the blame, the other 50% is on me, the moment I saw they jumping in their videos I should have ignored this game. I know I hate action, jump is unacceptable, unforgiveable and even with their sweet talk about going back to their roots I should have dismissed this game solely by the presence of jumping. They lied but they couldn't hide this attrocity of action in an RPG, still it is sick that they tried to "sell it" saying it would have the good old RPG combat.

The only way I'm going to hate Bioware ever again is if they show screen of DA4 where you distribute stat points between levels, have no jumping, and all controls are point and click slow combat. Because these things are powerful enough to trick me again, make me buy their game, get frustrated with their lies (because it is obviously going to be lies) and create dozens of accounts to curse them in these forums. So well, if they could please avoid those ridiculous lies they said while developing Inquisition for the next game I would be VERY happy. (And avoid their imbecile action games)

I thought I would never post about this subject again but it is completely unfair to call this forums toxic when their promotion of Inquisition was the most toxic **** I ever heard in my life. Not that they stopped at that right? What they did to PS3 and X360 was just cruel. So, perhaps they could  have less toxic talking if they were less vicious with their strikes. I didn't even have an account here prior to DAI because they didn't sell me a lie with DA2 or DAO, it took me a long time to get used to both (they were already faiures, too few races, classes, too much action, etc) but whatever, they didn't lie so it was on me. DAI was the first game they completely lied about and I bought the game because of their lies, I expected their lies to be true, and got a 100% action 0% RPG game.

It is sad that a company lies so much that you can't even believe them anymore, ever (except for a stat distribution screen, as I said, my weakness). It is even more sad that they think a forum is toxic given their level of toxicity. I wouldn't call these forum toxic, we are pretty straight forward, violent, aggressive and such, but they are the ones slowly killing with their toxin, they are venomous, hissing, devious snakes. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who got cured of Bioware by DAI, they can relax now, I doubt anyone who, like me, liked RPGs (and not this action ****) will ever bother them again UNLESS they go through ridiculous length of lies again pretending they still can make RPGs in which case they deserve the hatred.

I quit hating (DA4 and onwards) not because I realize I was wrong, but because I know for a fact that expecting them to be honest or do anything good is the most stupid thing a person can do. Having ANY hope on Bioware is completly insane. Hating them is not wrong, but since hating them means I was expecting something from them I just quit hating. Expecting honesty or quality from Bioware is like waiting for Jesus to come in a Rainbow Unicorn to take Satanists to the land of the Fairies. I know it was supposed to be clear by now, but just to make sure, a lot of things like my thousands of hateful posts here (across multiple accounts) did not need to happen if they were honest. They have a new (and disgusting) fanbase, focus on that mario jumping button mashing braindead organic things , don't drag people who liked old RPG games on this action ****.

What is valid critcism to one person is seen as whining to another. It comes down to a person view of valid critcism doesn't it? I have seen some that I thought was ridaclious {Cass looks like a man}. However I have also seen what is {IMO} valid critcism be shouted down or the thread giffed or trolled to death. So the only thing I can tell them is to use their common sense.

Overall I don't think forums are that toxic, but it depends bit on the topic. I guess some of my comments can be seen somewhat toxic, though they are mostly related on how disappointed I have been with PS3 version of the game, how it's left unpatched and unfinished and how BW has treated old gen players, it's something that has build up months, 10 to be exact so no wonder that I don't really have warm feelings towards them at the moment and that can lead me being bit toxic at times. It's not like the devs were active in the forums after release either.

First of all there was tons of negative feedback towards bugs and clitches and all problems game had. Somewhat it didn't seem like Bioware had anywhere as many devs taking in that technical feedback and helping people to be actually able to play, seriously their technical help is EA's outsourced help that knows nothing about the game. Many customers got broken games, especially old gen players, that they were never able to run. I know there was some devs like Alan collecting info about some PC bugs like party banter, but that was pretty much it.

With broken game like DAI, that still is pretty broken both old gen and PC also I guess since I downloaded trial version of it on PC and has encountered some serious problems... no wonder that players are getting bit toxic and irritated. It's not like it's completely unreasonable, this is GOTY game after all which has suffered from endless bugs since the release.

There's plenty of legitimate, well-expressed criticism on these forums, but I fear that one person claiming that the devs need snipers to protect them is more likely to stick in their minds than a dozen with entirely reasonable opinions about bugs or hairstyles or any other flaw in the game. It only takes a couple of people getting nasty with personal insults before the developers decide (not unreasonably) that they have better ways to spend their free time.

Exactly. It isn't that everyone is complaining illegitimately. It is that those who do go 'off the hook' are very vocal and create a toxic environment. Honestly if I were a Dev I'd never come to these boards because all the people with reasonable complaints (hair issues, the majority of DAI being side quests) are nice and all, but the radioactive cockroaches are everywhere. It just doesn't seem worth it to me, which sucks because we do have good ideas here and it would be great if the devs could see them. I'm sure some read the forums and just don't post, but sadly the friendly environment that had existed here prior to 3-4 years ago has dissipated.

Though they should have someone that could be more active on these forums just to answer simple feedback posts about this and that, if it will get fixed in a patch etc. They don't need to get into debates about the lore, politics, lifestyle choices and all that BS that pollutes these threads from time to time.

Personally, I don't think I'd want to frequent an environment where people constantly ripped apart my hard work (with or without cause). It's not that you shouldn't be allowed to criticize, but that would be really damn disheartening to see day in and day out. I don't blame them for wanting some distance.

I have honsetly never seen a dev be verbally attacked on these forums. I have seen tough questions thrown their way they may not have wanted to answer. It seems when a dev is on here the conversation goes  is just fine .So I find it ridiculous that the excuse they use is "toxic forum" for not responding to feedback and the like.

I wouldn't either, and that's based on even getting one whiff of bad feedback on my writing, which I haven't shown to many people..

When marketing a game like this, that involved a lot of your own work and contribution, I think you have to be emotionally built to handle a bit of bad feedback here and there.. Like they say, you can't please everybody. People will complain and people will find things they don't like, no matter what. There is no such thing as "perfection".

I've seen devs verbally attacked but in any case, the devs aren't the ones saying the forums are toxic, the forumites are.
