Obviously overleveling was a huge problem in the base game. But now we have Take It Slow (slows your XP gain) and Even Ground (enemies are always at least your level) as options. And hurrah.

What do you think the best combo is? Is it best to use both or just one? Do you level too quickly with just Even Ground? Do you risk being underleveled for Jaws and Trespasser if you just do Take It Slow?

What the current consensus on this?

Excellent timing. All Trials on is getting all the press right now, but I'd like to see some discussion about lesser combinations.

I personally would not use Take it Slow, since I tend to do main quests under-leveled as it is. I need those skill points. Maybe after WEWH and Abyss are done I'd flip it on, since by then my XP earn rate ramps way up and I go from level 12 to level 18 in the blink of an eye.

Even Ground is a gimme, I can't see doing Trials without it. Although, I wonder if Walk Softly without Even Ground might be interesting? Toss in a few surprises, but without worrying about constantly being outclassed?

And since I like to hunt bears ... gonna take Grizzly End.

Rub Some Dirt On It I'm still on the fence about. It could be a good way to force planning out battles instead of just button mashing, but it could also be very frustrating with lots of reloads.

Trials I don't see a use for, but could be convinced otherwise:

Rest Easy: who cares about Focus? They blew it with this one. Should have been no auto-heal and only 1 healing potion in resupply. Fortunately it's easy enough to get the same effect by just avoiding camps altogether.

Fair-weather Friends: I don't have anything against it, it's just too late for me. I've exhausted all RP I'd ever want to do with this set of companions. I already did my jerk-IQ run -- this would have been AWESOME for that.

Travel Light: Requires paying more attention to resource management, or, having superior tactics and gear so nailed that you basically never take any damage. Just not that interesting to me. Kind of nice for solo runs that never use the caches anyway, just use it for Special Shipments.

My favourite is Even ground, seeing as i mostly do everything in game i am always a few levels above the main quest content late in the game. It used to remove some of the challenge, now its finally "fixed".

Grizzly End - love it, bears are the real villains in this game and the most fun enemy to fight.

I could see Travel Light as something i would use, mainly because after having played the game for 600 hours i know where each cache is, so i can plan my potions accordingly. Would mix it up abit if i used this.

Rub some dirt on it - Not interested in it, it feels like a complete nerf. Though it would force the use of more potions and tonics in battle.

I do not like Take it slow as i usually find it takes awhile to get to level 27 anyway. I normally reach it at the end of Jaws of Hakkon or The Descent.

I did a short playthrough with Even Ground - Take it slow - Fair Weather Friends and - Travel Light - just to get the achievements, stopped after i reached Halamshiral. Was fun enough, but i would never do a playthrough without doing everything in the order i am used to.

My completionist nature makes Even Ground a necessity and I find that Even Ground makes Take it Slow a necessity, otherwise you just level absurdly quick.

I haven't tried it but doesn't even ground work both ways? If that's the case you could fight Cory at level 7 with take it slow and it wouldn't matter much. Heck, comboing the two alone might make the game easier since all your high level schematics stay even more OP for longer.

I play it like that on hard. It took a bit to get used to all the new abilities enemies have, but now it's not really *that* challenging. I had the misfortune of getting my Warrior Inquisitor one-shotted by promoted archers with Leaping Shot on several occasions, though. If it doesn't prove to be that much of a challenge, I consider making my next playthrough Walk Softly + Even Ground + Take It Slow (to offset the increased XP gain). Does anyone know the maximum achievable level (no grinding) in that case? 25-ish?

I did encounter what seems like a bug with Walk Softly. In order to spare myself the tedium, I turned off the trial while hunting druffalos in Haven (have you ever tried hunting promoted druffalos? The horror!), and then later turned it on. After that, I haven't gotten a single promoted enemy in about 4-5 hours in the Hinterlands. The enemies still had the new abilities, but none were "promoted" when viewed in Tactical Cam.

OT, but Trespasser seems to have broken quite a few things in the game. Banter doesn't trigger anymore, I've had convos and cutscenes failing to start barring me from progressing further in Solas' personal storyline...

That's not my understanding of it. I think it only increases the level of enemies who are below you, but not the other way around.

Can someone confirm this?

I thought my companions were oddly quiet in my current PT...

^ This. Enemies will be at least your level. That means those on lower levels will be your level now and those that are higher level will stay higher level.

My companions were oddly silent in my first file, but now, with Trespasser installed, I'm hearing so much that I've never before experienced. So I think it seems to go both ways re: banter problems -- which is, to the best of my knowledge, how it has gone with every single patch. Quite odd.

That makes sense. I hadn't taken into account that Even Ground will up your XP earn rate.

Also, Take It Slow is a whole new ballgame for speedruns. Beating the game at Level 12 used to be the gold standard. It should be possible to beat it below Level 12 now, although it may require duping the Power Amulet to make up for lack of skill points.
