For RP reasons, I could never use corruption runes. It was just... too dark? Evil? Bad? I don't see how my Inquisitor would be comfortable using it.

Well, I trust Dagna to make a version to make a less volatile, safer version.

...come to think of it, maybe that's not so great an idea?

Besides, it's not like we don't already use spooky stuff against our enemies. Necromancy, assassination, Reavers using blood magic in all but name, Rift magic, and worst of all bees. Snippets of Red Lyrium, kept under control, aren't overly worse than those.

I mean, the visual effect is literally crystals sprouting from where an enemy is struck, implying some kind of physical reaction or element (not that an application of "pure" energy would be any better, as what would that mean? Corruption energy? Blight energy?). This actually seems similar to the method Horrors use to attack. It may not implant enough material to let it sprout and grow in the long-term (educated guess here), but it will cause the victim to feel ill.

Hmm, that's true, its been awhile since since I saw the animation.  Maybe getting it in the body isn't enough in small amounts, Red Templars seem to consume the stuff by the handful.  I think the energy would be harmful, but if we take Meredith as a model they have to be actively channeling a huge amount of it through their body for them to be infected.

Well, Sandal makes a rune from Bartrand's fragment too, remember, it increased knock-back chance.  So there's precedent for it.  They both seem to be too good at what they do to give you something that might spread red lyrium or infect you.

The infection of the person we're trying to actively kill isn't really a concern, but rather the potential for unintended collateral damage. Proximity with the stuff is unhealthy on its own; if Varric was allowed to keep the shard in DA2, he'll talk about how he can still hear the "song" when close to it, and how he keeps it within a series of lead-based safes while limiting its study to once a week per-person. Note that this splinter is the same thing that caused Bartrand and his entire household to go totally insane, without requiring any consumption for further physical growth.

The cause for concern would be what becomes of the splinters left in corpses, or stuck in pieces of the land from missed shots, or falling into lakes, rivers...

That... is a disturbing thought.  That shard did take several years of what I'm guessing was near continuous exposure to affect Bartrand so severely, and it only seemed affect him not his household.  So I don't think the shards by themselves will cause much of a problem except maybe for some poor rock collector down the line.  My only question then would be whether or not red lyrium can grow by itself or if it requires bodies to grow out of.  Or maybe the bodies merely accelerate the process.  Because if these shards could spawn larger growths of red lyrium in the landscape, that's a huge problem.

That's actually quite similar to arguments made in favor of using Blood Magic.

Red Lyrium itself is an actively malignant substance; it's infused with the Blight, and capable of infecting most life forms that come into contact with it. It's more of a literal biological weapon than conventional explosive. I would say there's a much better argument to be made against using it than the other way around.

You're right, mine was a bad analogy. I guess coating your weapons in poison would be a more apt comparison. And to be honest, I don't think any of my Inquisitor's would really use it instead of something elemental, but it's great in gameplay and has a really cool effect and colour ^_^

Well, Dagna makes red lyrium weapons for you, and there are some other pretty dark things abilities can do, but yeah, if I was really in Thedas, I wouldn't use it either.

You know what else is? The tranquil at Suledin Keep who talks about how it would be virtually impossible to eliminate all of the red lyrium in the ground of Emprise de Lion (and presumably other places), and how it will inevitably infect earthworms etc. They need to find a way of completely eliminating it.

It's not even that good. It's useless against Red Templars, dragons, demons and undead, so what to use it for - killing some bandits and local fauna?
