At what point in the game does this open up? Please limit spoilers as much as you can. I'm just curious if I have to do a certain mission or simply progress a certain distance into the game.

I did that on my first run. All the quarians on the ship are hating on you cuz you brought him aboard.
It's even funnier if you bring him to the Citadel. Nobody even gives a crap that there's a Geth strolling around! XD
