Long story short, I lost all my saves for all three games in the most bizarre way. I was mid-ME3 on my most recent playthrough, and I wanna finish it, so I figured I'll just remake my Shep for ME1, edit all the proper stuff, import to ME2, rinse and repeat. Buuut as it turns out there's no save editor for ME1. I read about some of the things I can do with ME1 console but I can't figure out how to make change the game status to complete?

There is no save editor for ME1.

Your best bet is to either:

  • Restart in ME2, then edit the save to re-make all the ME1 decisions, then, play through the game and import into ME3.
  • Restart in ME3, then edit the save to re-make all the ME1 and ME2 decision, then play through the game again.

(Note that i play on Xbox so my knowledge is rather limited in this regard. However, from what I have read there is no way to change the game status to complete using console cheats.)

unfortunately there isn't a save editor for ME1 specifically. the best you can do is what Julius said above.

however, if you were in mid-ME3, you should have enabled "cloud save" in Origin so it can restore your ME3 saves.

Yeah, I didn't have that enabled at the time. Believe me, I've tried everything to get those saves back, but there just isn't a way, so now I'm just trying to recreate them. It's a bummer I can't do much about ME1 ones. I'll start from ME2 then.

how did you lose them exactly? if you deleted them by accident, try a file recovery program like GetDataBack for NTFS

They just disappeared from their folders in my documents overnight. That's literally all that's happened. It's one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. And I mean it when I say I've tried everything, I've used recovery tools, done a system restore, even talked to ME tech support lady, nothing worked.

maybe it's a virtual poltergeist!!!

in any event, you'll have to start ME1 all over again.

You could also check the Mass Effect Save site to see if they have what you're looking for.  http://www.masseffectsaves.com

I know the website, and I don't know want just any saves, I want my saves. ;) Oh well, by the time I die I'm sure I'll have played through these games 20 more times, I'll make the same Sheps someday, for now I'll just remake my most recent one in ME2 to finish ME3.

Another question - if I can't set the game status to complete, can I at least make the game think it's NewGame+?

This thread has reminded me that I really need to find that cable for my external storage. Or buy one very soon.

You do, you all do, haha. The funny thing is I back up EVERYTHING, I have two external hard drives and like ten different flashdrives but I never use my documents for keeping my things on my hard drive, it's always on a different partition (I've had windows crash on me one too many times), and so it just hadn't occured to me that I actually do have something in my documents worth backing up.

You can also think about acquiring the Genesis DLC, and make the major game decisions quickly.

You should set up File History (Win7, Win8, Win10) if you have the backup space and you're not using a backup agent (e.g. Acronis): you would have a chance to recover the file.

Just never use Toshiba Canvio Backup software for your emergency backup needs. I am here because I'm in a similar boat... I had a catastrophic failure of my motherboard and and some HD data corruption during an OS change but thought I was cool because I was totally backed up... 3 TBs of system images... Turns out their software is so terrible they couldn't get my data back because I had created my system images from multiple drives...who doesn't these days? Anywho... Trying to recreate saves :) I've had time to mourn. Oh and hay I DID manage to recover a goodly portion of my dragon age saves thanks to origin.

Sorry for hijacking the thread for a bit but it's for a similar issue after all.

I know that there's no decent Save editors for ME1, but is there any way to convert xbox saves to pc saves for ME1? I recently thought I'd start playing the series on my pc instead of my xbox and I've gotten the saves from ME2 & 3 over without any issues but not for 1.

I've got the xbox save transfered alright thanks to Modio but.. not sure if there's actually a way to convert it so it'll load on pc?

Gibbed was actually able to open them, interestingly enough but I can't seem to save them in the correct format (just ME2/3 format) using it.

" First you have to manually transfer the file by hand and as admin."  " There is no transfer program that works, i always transfer the two files by hand Like "Jane 02, Char file to a folder that i named ME1. set in the Mass Effect 2 save folder  just make shure that you run as admin."

" Sorry i miss read the Topic the info that i gave was for PC version. "    " To the lady that had a catastrophic failure  re down load Origin then log in with your user name and Pass Word it will re download the Games and some saves."
