more role play less shooty pewdy pooty pls. I find that nearly everything in the mass effect series lacks a diplomatic alternative to shooting baddies.
the Picard option

I relish in knowing that there's at least more freedom to resolve matters diplomatically than in most games, in any case. Heh.

Fun fact: Planescape: Torment is perhaps the closest a game has ever taken gamers to playing as Picard. Full of strange, wonderous and incredibly threatening creatures, and yet you can win pretty much all encounters simply by being a good talker. It's the one and only game in about 50 years of game development.
sad when you think about it.

Yeah, Planescape's great about that. And it's great about a bunch of other things, too.

I'd love a handful of sidequests that play out like a short Star Trek episode:
1. Angry space man comes on view screen and threatens destruction or something
2. Commence negotiation
3. Deliberate with crew about negotiation with or subversion of enemy
4. Resolve by negotiation/subversion/fight sequence (if the level designers are up for it) or end in some non game over fail state
It seems like an easy way to add extra content without too much game design work. However, it'd be heavily reliant on VO, which could be more costly.
Mind you, Mass Effect is an action game as well as an RPG at its core. Designing Planescape levels of subversion would run counter to the core mechanics of the game. That doesn't mean it could not or should not happen, but I don't think devs will invest heavily in a feature that isn't required or expected by the majority of the audience.

One the things that I've always loved about KOTOR 2 is that there are some really major moments that basically serve as verbal boss battles - the first confrontation with Atris and the meeting with the assembled Jedi Council would probably have resulted in some kind of physical altercation from other developers, but the choice was made to let them be essentially a verbal joust between the PC and the other character(s). I would LOVE to see BioWare do something like that, but it seems to be more of an Obsidian thing, since there were shades of that in NWN2 as well.
I would like to be able to play the diplomat, the one who resolves confrontations with conversation, or at least have the option. And get equal XP for it as well, let's make sure we're clear on that - don't favor fighting it out, give equal experience for peaceful resolution as there is with violence.

Funny I recently did a playthrough in which with every choice I thought on what Picard would pick, obviously It's mostly a Paragon playthrough as well as avoiding certain missions and assingments because they conflict with mey Shepard's ethical code/orders.

I wish the fight with Sion and Traya could have been completed with only words. With Sion, it would have been interesting to mind trick him like Kreia does so you seem invisible and slowly erode his will as he furiously swipes at the air around you. With Traya, I think you should have been able to convince her to kill herself because you've taken to heart all of her lessons, only on the condition that all of your actions in the latter part of the game align with what Traya would have done.
I only hope that non-combat solutions cane have the same amount of feedback as their combat counterparts. I'd want conversations to be both well directed (visually stimulating) as well as mentally challenging (no paragon/renegade insta-wins). Subversion tactics should feel clever and hopefully the game can be clever enough itself to make the player feel like they came up with the idea on their own. The game shouldn't play itself when the player has a high charisma or intelligence.

Agreed the Picard option would be great

To be fair, shooting bio-mechanical life forms with holographic bullets (that they perceive to be real) is a pretty smart way to solve a problem.

If that means the main character will be getting an epic Picard speech, it will certainly make a paragon playthrough a lot more fun.

I have to wonder how much the people who want 'more diplomacy' overlap with the people who demand the persuasion options be removed because they're supposed 'Get out of Jail Free Card/'
Given this is the BSN, probably quite a bit.

I like the persuade option. I'd be sad if it went away.
