I can't find anything, really. But if you want a game just a fun and with a really great online system. Just try Dark Souls 2, have a great time (thought it may take some time till it clicks with you), and who cares if it's not like ME3mp. After all, taking a break with something completely difference is for the best anyway.
And how many times have I ever played a game where I wanted more like it only to find nothing else comes close. "All the time." Why I gave up on this idea and just move on. Let it go. "Let it go, John."
If you want to swap the grind for zombies, feel free to try Zombie Army (Trilogy). Pick your character, go solo or hit a 2-4 man lobby (whatever you like) and enjoy skull-cracking slow motion views of how your sniper rifle caved in an enemies head / lung / testicle, whatever you like. It comes with a Horde mode if you want to play survival with mates rather than the campaign (neither has the random factor of ME3MP - but with some large maps and customizable spawn rates + different difficulty options, you can mix it up a heck of a lot) and there is no levelling nor weapon 'improving' to be done, so it's not overly similar nor modern/futuristic - but still great third person co-op fun.
Here's a clip of a seige objective in the first chapter (quite easy - but can still get tense if you allow them to swarm). Crank it up to 1080p HD and enjoy the crunchy crunches. It's basically L4D in 3rd person (and hey, it even allows you to play as the L4D and L4D2 characters if you have Trilogy).
Can turn off/down/up the kill-cams and turn off the 'news filter' (black and white) if you prefer.
wow most of these games listed have nothing in common with ME or ME 3 MP. Uncharted? The Last of Us? The closest thing I can think of that meets your criteria is Borderlands or Bioshock. They are both in first person but they are story driven games with combat very similar to ME 3. Its hard to find a good 3rd person shooter these days is the biggest problem. Also Destiny. If you haven't tried it is a lot of fun. Maybe if you can find a copy of Gears of War for PC or wait for the remaster but then again that doesn't have the horde mode that is very similar to ME 3 MP. It is a fun cover based 3rd person shooter though.

Why I wish thread like these were always called "What games do ME3mp fans love to play?" Instead.

that implies that these are our favorite games. Example I don't like Borderlands but I see the similarities. I have friends who loved Mass Effect and hate Destiny. But to pretend like Uncharted and The Last of Us are anything like Mass Effect is pure crap and I like those games. I am excited to play the Nathan Drake collection.
a] Of course most people will reference games they've played themselves (and in most cases, liked them).
b] OP wants modern or futuristic settings, so that cuts out a lot of options (as do any filters when asking such questions).
c] The closest thing to a replica of ME3MP is DA:I MP - the only difference being maps are also randomized and it's not wave based, compared to ME3MP which has set maps. Bioware tried hard to replicate ME3MP's success (including the horrendous grind factor) - but if fell flat.
People have exhausted any viable candidates, so naturally it evolves to what people simply enjoy playing. ZAT (my suggestion) isn't modern/futuristic but it made me think of Horde mode, which is esentially ME3MP (over-shoulder 3rd person / shooter, replace abilities with an arsenal of explosives, 1-4man, plenty of difficulty settings, customizable spawns, set-maps) without any grinding for weapons - you pick your loadout, join a lobby (or go solo) and survive as many waves as possible for leaderboards. It likely isn't what OP wants - but mostly all viable suggestions have already been given.

I haven't been able to get into the Borderland games either. Have the first two, with the second one being the LE edition. Only played a bit of the second one and just can't get into the game at all. Especially the lore and all that toilet hick humour. Then the part that dialog scenes get skipped all the time, and yes, I'm not looking forward to return any time soon. If ever. Money down the drain.
And for a person playing more weapon focus ME3mp, any third person cover shooter should come close enough.
EDIT - and as a gamer, I care more about the games that others really enjoy. You know, the games others just can't pull themselves away from to be allowed to play other games too.
Saying ME3MP is comparible to [Insert 3rdShooter Here] just because you're not throwing abilities around is nonsensical. I've got all the Borderlands series (Insert 3rdShooter) and wouldn't even remotely think of ME3MP in any light when playing it > and that HAS abilities/builds.
Personally I don't base it all on mechanics - there is the mode/style/flow to consider. If you enjoy ME3MP, you do so because of fun randomized co-op chaos in enclosed spaces full of detosplosions. You can take or leave the grind factor / promotion / stat / leaderboard side of it. ZAT is the closest I've played recently to it - excluding DA:I-MP which doesn't count. There's no abilities (lobbing dynamite to setup explosion traps from safety, or organizing wire traps and trip mines to secure locations being the closest you'll get), but it has the fun randomized co-op chaos in enclosed spaces full of detosplosions. Swap 'Tech' for 'Supernatural' and replace Reapers with 'walkers' & Banshee's with Chainsaw/Tommygun weilding super-zombie-soldiers.
The only other one I could think of had already been suggested (and one I hadn't played myself - Gears Of War MP?) Had seen videos and it seemed pretty similar.

No it's not. Some folks just want to shoot something in third person while getting magnet grabbed into hard cover during those tense tactical retreats.
+1 for Fuse. It's too bad that game didn't do better. It was a solid game. It would have been even better with a full co-op team, which I never got to do.
While not as numerous as ME3, Devastation has its share of WTF bugs:
These were recorded on Magnus Difficulty, which is the equivalent of Insanity.
1 - Semi drives off a cliff, no problem, just drive back up
2 - Successful Dodge slows me instead of enemy and I get instagib.
3 - Any other enemy would fall to the ground after being frozen, but Megatron is content to be a giant flying ice cube. When I jump up, he teleports to the ground, shatters the ice, parries my next attack, teleports 30 feet away, and exclaims "Victory!"
4 - Snake pretending to be Bumblebee pretending to be frozen in an icicle-shaped cardboard box
5 & 6 - both times I was accelerating in one direction, ready to slam into an enemy directly in front of me, only to make a complete U-turn back the way I came to certain doom, and both times Optimus chimed in "you'll have to do better than that!" as famous last words
