Hmmmm. Who did I consider an equal kinda person in Bioware games? Someone who has their own PoV that I don't necessarily (in fact rarely) agree with but can respect their investment. A sounding-board. Not Varric in DAI, maaaybe in DA2. Not Garrus though he was better than Varric in DAI. I liked Aveline and Isabela, especially Aveline in the role of someone I'd go to to have a srs discussion with and be challenged. Wynne, Alistair, Shale, gingerdorf, Leliana are all no's. Morrigan? She'd offer a contrary perspective I'm sure, don't think I could ever fully trust the angle the perspective is delivered from though. Same with Vivienne. Wrex could work. Mordin would be fun to brainstorm with. Miranda, BabyDaddy, Kaidan and etc are out. Aria? She works too funnily enough. Iron Bull, no, Dorian, no, Sera, BWAHAHAHAHA, Cass? Yes. Liara. Lolno. Blackwall no, Solas maaaaybe.

So someone Aveline/Morrigan/Wrex/Solas/Cass like.

You just described Varric.

Which is funny, because I equal parts hate and am amused by Varric. . .but I never considered him to be much of a bro. :P

----------

More specifically, I want someone more like Barney Stinson from HIMYM than Varric; someone who is outlandish, immature, crude, and probably a womanizer (Yet he never hits on a female player after they become friends. No romance option for you!). But despite these flaws, they are a loyal friend and even share some tender moments with the player. . .but many times they can be encountered at the bar as they hit on people and play 'wingman' for the player. . .whether the player wants them to or not.

Bonus points if this Bro isn't a human. Perhaps a Drell, or a Krogan.

. . .Or 'Brogan', if you will. ;)

Someone like Revolver Ocelot would be nice.

I agree but you might want to elaborate on what Ocelot you mean

MGS1: Smart & Cocky

MGS2: Intelligent, Manipulative & sometimes batsh*t crazy

MGS3: Cocky

MGS4: Intelligent Sociopath & Batsh*t Crazy

MGS5: Loyal, Intelligent, & Willing to cross any line

If you mean MGSV Ocelot then you've got my vote, the galaxy needs more pro interrogators

MGSV Ocelot of course. That was him being his normal self.

MGS1, 2, and 4 was him hamming it up X1000 for the Patriots.

I never thought of Varric as my bro either. In DA2 I kept waiting for him to find some more personality or betray me or something, but all he ever did was agree with me. Then in DAI he was equally boring and agreeable, with his most shining moment requiring Cassandra's stoicism and love of cheesy romance novels. But I've also never thought of Garrus as the epitome of bro-ness.

Lol yep, he had enough ham in MGS4 to feed 2 whole countries.

But a character like MGSV Ocelot would be great, I could totally see the Gunnery Chief scene from ME2 being redone, they had a similar scene in MGSV featuring Ocelot oddly enough

Spoiler

Imagine this scene but replace the soldiers with colonist or Andromeda crewmen being taught how to properly use firearms

Agreed. Plus that scene shows how seriously he's taken BB's advice from way back in Snake Eater, and applies it to his troops' training. The pc having an impact on the 2nd in command through dialogue would be nice. Like the influence Shep's chats had on Garrus in ME, and then seeing how the latter applied it later in ME2.

My protag's bro usually depends on what personality I'm playing. Renegades tended to favour Miranda and Jack (their Citadel bonding scenes were golden). Kasumi would've been great if we could talk to her more. Overall, Kaidan, Ashley and Joker were probably bro material for me. Tali joined that status in ME2.

I don't know about Garrus. His personality differences between ME1 and ME2 bother me a little. He goes straight from humourless subordinate to joking BFF. I felt like I'd missed some crucial relationship development during the two years Shepard spent dead. I really like the bottle-shooting scene in ME3 though, that was such a great bonding moment. By that point, he did feel more like a good friend, even though he had very few scenes in ME2.

Maybe I'm just not that into the buddy type. In DA2, Aveline was much more of a close friend and confidant than Varric. I don't think it helped that he was the narrator, so I never felt like I could trust him. It was pretty funny when my Hawke showed up in DAI, talking like he was her sweet little misplaced kitten, despite being rivals in DA2. Having him as the buddy guy in DAI didn't really work, since he seems to see the Inquisitor as 'Not-Hawke'. There can only be one! :P  I would've gone for Cassandra as the ultimate bff there.

Ultimately, I think my 'bro' has to be a character that's willing to give me their honest opinions (and challenge me, if need be). I should be able to respect them a lot, but also feel fond and caring towards them. They'd need to connect well with my protag, and be useful in personal and professional situations. Preferably present from near the start of the story, for the full experience. I'd want them to show an interest in the main character too. If they can make me feel happy irl, that's a good sign.
