You could look at it as we used him to get what we wanted. Even at the end of it all, even if he hates our guts, he still can't kill us since doing so would only cause more chaos for his "people".
Also, this seems pretty rewritey. Skyhold doesn't have any elven looks to it at all. No mosaics. And for it being his, it doesn't have any paintings aside from those he makes while he is there in the present era.
