Hey guys, just started playing the multiplayer.  I'm getting the hang of it, and have been focusing on keeper mostly, shes at level 13.  Ive been doing a chain lightning, static cage, frost step, and barrier build.  Its not bad, been pretty fun.  I typically enjoy melee a lot but got some decent pieces for her early.

I now have sufficient materials to craft some starter armor.  I still dont have enough cloth for some of the casters, but Reaver was looking very tantalizing.  Any recommendations about unlocking?

They're all good, but I would advise you to first unlock a character added by a DLC. They're usually stronger and more fun to play than the original crew.

Silent Sister for strong melee & low range gameplay. Easy to play, easy to survive, easy to kill things. Very mobile character with about no weaknesses but her horrible face...

Saarebas for strong defensive and/or offensive. Better than the Keeper in every way, but has a big learning curve. The good news is, if you can master her, everything else is gonna be a cakewalk (except the Assassin, she's in another category altogether).

Duelist, Virtuoso and Avvar are also great but requires a tremendous amount of materials.

You can't go wrong with a Reaver either, but she's a one-trick pony.

If you want to narrow your choice down, go with what you have a good weapon for. It's gonna be easier to farm materials on higher difficulties because you'll get more gold. More gold = more chests, more chests = more junk to salvage and more junk to salvage = more materials. Welcome to RNG ;)

I must have gotten really lucky then, I have the Avvar already unlocked.  Is he pretty powerful?  Hmm... I do enjoy two handers in single player.

Yes, but he wraps his body with 1-ply tissue paper. Be careful out there!

Hmm what about the arcane warrior?  I mean, I'm sure they were powerful in the past, not sure how the recent nerf affected them in MP?

Silent Sister. Super fun to play and viable on multiple difficulties. Nice mix of warrior and rouge.

Arcane Warrior was a lot of folks key to the higher difficulties, might also be a good character to invest in. Also kind of Warrior and Mage hybrid regarding the various distances he can engage opponents, both up close and at long range. Tanky and high scoring.

Whatever you build, try and get the second tier armors as soon as possible. They will afford you significantly greater survivability under any circumstance.

Make friends and build a small community, it will help a ton. Happy Hunting!

That's a dirty lie. She can do way, way more than just spamming Dragon Rage. Easy example?

Pop Rampage and THEN Dragon Rage. See?

P.S. I actually love the Reaver but you will be spamming Dragon Rage like 90% of the time, yeah.

To the OP -- a lot will depend on what you find enjoyable and (as previously mentioned) what good weapons you have. But some of the more forgiving classes would be (in no particular order): Legionnaire, Reaver, Elementalist, Keeper, Arcane Warrior, and Silent Sister. There are other classes as powerful (or more powerful) in some cases, but the learning curve can be a lot steeper and/or require better gear.

I just started a few weeks ago and have all the classes unlocked now except Necro.   SS is easiest to play.   If I join a game and saw the winning odd looks dubious... (like two level 1 keepers and a level 2 duelist), I just use SS to ensure we could get to zone 5.   Lego would do too but just take forever.  Reaver is fast, but then I have to watch health on some fight.

The only problem SS has is the shield guys.   I once went toe to toe with 3 shields for like a minute and all I got was block block block block.... and then the level 1 archer and level 1 keeper caught up and killed them.

However I do suggest unlock the Reaver first.  The reason is that Reaver armor takes metal instead of leather.  And I am pretty sure you have more metal (iron the most probably) vs leather.   You need to unlock Reaver T1 armor, then don't even wear that... make the T2 armor.   And don't wear that, make the T2.5 armors.  Now you have the T2.5 ugly Reaver armor, but it is good armor. :P

I'd say save your materials, you'll get all the classes by the experienced warrior/rogue/mage challenges (except zither) for free. 1 million xp seems daunting yes, but it's over before you know it. (Edit: Ignore this, confirmed to not unlock classes if you don't have em as posted below)

Silent Sister or Saarebas. Though they kinda ruin the older characters as they are so different in power level.

Silent Sister. Although Reaver is my favorite and does a lot of damage.

As other said. Silent Sister is very durable.
I stuck with the Lego, he is incredibly tough and generates some great xp with Shield wall and taunt.
As for mage, you can't go wrong with Ele, AW or Saarebas. They are all great xp producers and Ele is very fun to play (in my opinion)

No the classes are not unlocked with the experienced chests.  I just discovered it this weekend.  When I got the warrior one, I already had all the warrior classes and silent sister unlocked so I didn't know any difference.  But when I got the rogue chest this weekend, I found out that my assassin stay locked because I never unlocked her (via craft armor or loot).   I did get her starting armor a few hours later though...

There are a lot of great suggestions here but I would also echo the Silent Sister or Reaver (if you have a halfway decent two-hander yet) since you mentioned you enjoy melee.

The real key is to unlock the higher tier armors as quickly as possible as they make a massive difference on survivability, especially on lower difficulty levels.  Unless you fear you'll grow bored of a class quickly you are better off unlocking the highest tier armor for one character, then the highest tier for a second and so forth rather than unlocking all characters before moving on to higher tier armor.

That's just how I would do it if I were starting over on a new account today though.

I like to do rampage, warhorn and then dragon rage to mix it up -- also helps get health back up before next wave of raging

I guess that's what I get for responding without reading the entire thread.  If the above is the case then ignore my previous post, as unlocking all the classes would be better since you'll soon get the Dragonscale armor for all of them.  I had assumed that finishing those achievements would unlock the other classes for you.  Whoops!

.

I'd suggest Dragon Raging until low health. Reaver has passives that causes her to do a great deal more damage when she has lower health. Then when you are close to dying pop Rampage to get it all back and redo the process. You will kill faster and hit much much harder. Try it out

Don't feel bad, I thought the same thing too.  As soon as I got the rogue chest, I went to put the armors on all my rogue, only than I found out that my assassin card was still not selectable.   But on the other hand, unlocking the earlier classes are not really a priority.  Only a few weeks in, I got enough free armors from chests to unlock every character except necro.   The only characters that I actually crafted armors to unlock are Reaver, Silent Sister, and Saarebas.  All the others were unlocked from loots.

Now I have two 2% HoK rings, my Reaver doesn't lose health using dragon rage anymore.   Most things die in 1 hit.. and something multiple things die in 1 hit.  I pop Rampage once in a while for fun.   Warhorn seems to make things slower... because now I have to chase them down.    I was thinking what if I take that biggest threat passive.. make them come to me so I could just turn in a circle and spam dragon rage? LOL :D

I put an 8% hok on my hakkon gs (ha-ha Snakbite ;). ) and wear a Dragon Rage Ring with a Mighty Blow ring (I keep and upgrade mighty blow) and I've seen 10K Dragon Rages at time, when I am lower in health of course. For me it is hard to lose health but I rarely use rampage anymore because the 8% hok is the perfect amount for her with my uses.

I am saving all my cotton when I get a better 2-hander.   I don't have dragon rage ring yet... still looking for one. :(

How dare you defile Valor-ie's upgrade slots with HoK!

Seriously though, the Reaver already has heal on hit and two abilities that restore health. Why put heal on kill on your weapon?

For realz...heal on kill on that greatsword is such a waste of potential...

Too bad you don't have one. Your opinion matters not.
