Maker this, Chantry that, Andraste's knickers, Blah Blah. Seriously kind of fed up with the overly religious dialog everywhere especially since every game exposes more of the truth that none of it is real.  Also that Qun is another giant collective mind **** that needs to be toned down.

You chose a story that features heavily all of these aspects. Don't expect it to vanish. Rather, choose a different story. It's easier and more likely to bear fruit than to expect this story to change so drastically to meet your whim.

'Tis true that there are a lot of things clearly reminiscent of real life (Exalted Marches similar to the Crusades, anyone?)

And Foley is right, ME never explores it in a thematic fashion. It's a background of sorts.

Actually and bravo for BW of actually showing historical understanding in demonstrating that the 'Dalish' were just as guilty of the Crusades in some senses as the 'Chantry'.  Same goes for the Qunari.  Rather mirors real life.

"very game exposes more of the truth that none of it is real" - What? No. From DAO to DAI there is nothing to prove that the Maker is real but there is also nothing to prove that it is not. It is pretty much like real world, when you create a myth of an almighty being the rules over the whole creation, possibly multiple dimensions, you can't prove of disprove existence. Something can only be proven true or false when it exists within time/space, within the universe that the beings analyzing it live in. Entities like God and the Maker supposedly exist outside the creation thus it is not even precise to say that they exist because they do not have a proper representation within the boundaries of time and space and are not made of anything, instead all things exist in them, they do not exist within constraints, they just can't be defined at all, even if they existed it wouldn't exactly be classified by "existence" because it would mean they are, somehow, limited.
So the better scenario when talking about God or the Maker is proving whether some claims about them are true or false. I can't prove god does not exist but I can prove miracles don't exist, well, specific miracles of course, happening within our timeframe at least.
Back to the Dragon Age series, we have found VERY little about Maker/Andraste. Nothing prove them true or false. Personally I have a feeling the Andraste was Flemeth and Shartan was Solas. Then the whole Chantry would be a lie, well, not for everybody, but at least your post would make sense... but with what we know now, even with all extra game lore, there is nothing "fake" with the chantry.

Along with the crusades, the Chantry Inquisition is pretty much the Spanish Inquisition but interestingly enough the Inquisition in game does not try to conquer and convert. It seems to be more of just protecting those under the chantry.

The only religious beliefs I recall in ME were just from the Asari. Liara always says "By the Goddess!" Then she pretty much realizes what the Gods of her people really were

Its interesting that the Inquisition established in Inquisition...ahem...is actually a lot more to its 'base word' really stripping away all the negative connotations.  The Inquisition/ Inquisitor in the game seeks out, explores, asks questions, Inquires, is Inquisitive.  None of the religious persecution and Witch Burnings.  Unless you go that route in some of the trials of course...

Maker's breath.. Does it really matter? I think it adds to the DA story as much as "By my ancestor's beard" or "May you be as stone" or "May the ancestors accept you when you fall"..

I really do not see it I think that most people are religious.  The confusion comes from people tend to make assumptions on what that means, in both the DA verse and in real life.  Andrastianism is not Christianity so they have a more 'liberal' world view on many social issues.  But the 'church' is just as powerful and just as involved in events around Thedas as it was in Medeval Europe.  Of course DA I does give you the option of literally breaking the back of a lot of that power. (The Templar Order)

People are religious in the sense that they believe in God, but they're religious in a rather modern Sundays, Holidays and Weddings sort of way. Religion does not seem pervasive through their lives.

Even the Templars basically do secular things using secular reasoning, they're not really a religious order in any meaningful sense except that the Chantry proved a convenient flag to operate under.

I'm loving the option to play as a religious character who speaks about his/her faith openly. I would like to be able to play as an Imperial Andrastian and support the Imperial Chantry or even another old human tribe (like the Avvar) with a faith we have not been exposed to yet.

What they need, I think, is another religion that the writers will leave as a mystery, just like with the Maker. Such things can add more depth to a character and make a world more interesting.

Perhaps.  This too is one interpretation of the situation in Medeval Europe.

I think they don't do enough with religion tbh.

Thedas is already a very 21st century version of medieval times, I'd like to see more material that isn't thoroughly secularized in more games like this.

Again I just do not see it, I mean sure they do not have the same predjudices as religions of times past...but they still have their fair share of bigotry, intolerance, general weirdness.

Well the difference is that we have actual evil cultists to find.  Although we'd really only be like the Spanish Inquisition if we let ourselves be co-opted by the Orlesian crown.  Something people generally don't remember was that the Spanish Inquisition was a rogue operation run by the Spanish crown to terrorize their own people into submission.  The Roman Inquisition run by the papacy saved more lives than it took since the accused would generally have been lynched or as good as lynched had it not been there to give people actual trials and opportunities to repent if convicted.  Leaving the Spanish Inquisition out of consideration, there were far more witch killings in places where the Church didn't hold sway.

My life would suck without Anders and his "Andraste's knicker weasels"  Hilars.  It's not much different than me saying "Sweet Zombie Jesus" (yes, I really do say Sweet Zombie Jesus when crap doesn't go as expected - and I'm not religious at all).  I think if you want a fantasy game where there is not an element of religion you need to move out of the Dragon Age Universe.  Religion is a fundamental part of the universe.  Without it, you are playing a fundamentally different game.

Excellent point (and something I did not actually kno).  Anyways interesting parallel given Tresspasser.  It seems the Trevelyan Inquistion has avoided two big mistakes.

Without religion in Thedas, we wouldn't have crazy bastards like Father Kolgrim to amuse us.

Ah I loved Father Kolgrim.  I was all like in the middle of his speech

"Andraste's the Dragon? :o "

And then he was all like. 'blah b;ah, she has been reborn better then ever before!'

"ANdraste's the Dragon!"

Hey, it's not his fault.

Speaking in all caps is the rule number 5 in the "Crazy religious personnel manual"!

Having more religion wouldn't have to mean adding more negative connotations, though. I'd personally love to see more positives. Chantry clergy helping the poor, the various festivals and calendar events we know exist, an actual Chantry service going on. Would have really loved to see the Grand Cathedral. (Maybe next game. :/)

I loved the details we get in codex entries about religion playing a part in the fabric of Andrastian culture. Like the song "Andraste's Mabari". I'll reiterate the festival thing, especially. Catholicism has a ton of feast days and festivals on its religious calendar and a lot of them were made a big to-do out of in medieval times (and still are, though more in some parts of the world than others). I'd love to see a major Andrastian holiday as a backdrop to some in-game event.

But yeah, that's the kind of thing I think is missing from in-game NPC spiritual life, outside of the occasional codex entry. Though, listening to the chatter throughout DAI, we definitely got a LOT more Andrastian religious culture than previous games gave us.

I think in a game series where the main quests are named after Chantry verses, you might be barking up the wrong tree.

If you can't deal with fictional people's fictional religions, how do you deal with real life?

Poorly, I'd imagine.

I think if I was a religious individual it would bother me more. Since I am not, I like how it compels you to ask questions and draw similarities between life and fiction... which are sometimes one and the same....

I guess I'm a little like the opposite. I would think I would probably not care or like it less if I wasn't a religious person. Since I am, I enjoy seeing religion and faith in games like Inquisition, even if the religion is unlike my own. It just makes the world more interesting to me.

I liked Thane and some of the religion that was touched on in ME, but I am greatly enjoying how religion is more prominent in Dragon Age.
