The Loss of a Friend (Jaws of Hakkon) is very well done

I wish we could know who wrote the little side quests. Whoever wrote this one did a great job. It goes in stages:

1. Find Jace and the letter. Very upsetting - as soon as I found them, I was 100% focussed on pursuing the killers.

2. The quest to find Grandin. As you follow the trail of slaughter, you slowly realise what's happened, as you start to see charred bodies.

3. Discovering Grandin invited the demon into himself.

4. At this stage I was 90% ready to let him carry on with his vengeful campaign, because I was still so outraged about what happened to Jace.

5. But at the last moment I remembered the note left by the Hakkonites:

A Warning

A message scrawled in a shaky hand:

Blood spilled will be answered. The Jaws of Hakkon will answer.

And so you realise that if you let Grandin carry on, the cycle of horror will continue, and there'll be more Jaces, on both sides. The 'in a shaky hand' is a masterful touch: in a few words, it suggests the same rage and outrage you felt when you found Jace.

It's a tiny quest with little dialogue and no implications, but it's quite profound.

If you let him live you find out he saves some children from a Hakkonite attack. Some avvar will be talking about it down by the hut next to the lake.

You can even hear a little ambient dialogue in camp about Jace before everything else.  So when I found the letter, it was an "oh", moment.  For a little side quest that impacts nothing else, it really packed an emotional punch.  The decision about Grandin was actually one of the more difficult ones for me in the overall game.  I've let him live, and I've killed him in different playthroughs.  It's a sad feeling either way.

Yup, but let's not forget he's an abomination in the end, and he might choose to eat the next group of children he sees.

So he's still a good guy even though he's become possessed by a rage demon/spirit?

Hm... That does put it in perspective along with the Ballad of Woolsey quest. Still you're risking a full-on Kiss-the-Abom barbeque, which was why I chose to kill him >.>

Have Cole there with you adds an extra touch. He sense the guy change way before meeting him.

Yeah, yet another reason to just kill him. It just implies that the spirit kicked out the previous occupant.
