I'm definitely not asking for impossible things such as happy endings, but maybe something worthy of such a rich character.
In fact, I hope he doesn't necessarily "end" or anything (that would be tragic in itself.) Maybe there could be a way to reach a neutral ground, depending on our choices in DA:I (for example, telling him you'd redeem him instead of defeat him in the end.)
Am I the only one who thinks Solas is choosing this journey alone because he is attempting to punish himself for his own crimes? He may fear dying alone, but he seems to be forcing himself to pursue this pain by choice.
I believe so too - in part, absolutely! In his own words, there are crimes “for which the only fitting punishment is an eternity of torment”. On the other hand, Solas refuses to inflict his personal burden of guilt and suffering on Lavellan - nor will he have her see what he becomes. Therefore, one might speculate that the lone wolf death path is not merely about self-punishment, but furthermore about releasing his loved ones – thus protecting them from what he considers an even greater hurt than the one they are already experiencing.

That line makes me wonder though, did he just stand by and let Mythal be murdered? Was he part of it without knowing and might have accidentally aided in her demise? Or was he feeling bad for taking her power at the end of the main game?
There are a million others threads devoted to that very topic that you or I could join in on and I think it's a very divided subject, so it's unnecessary to hash it out here, ad nauseum.
This thread is more about speculating about why Solas has a fear of dying alone. Perhaps you have something to add in that regard? I'd be interested to hear your opinion.
Then I wonder why you started the discussion with me.
What I think about it others have already covered, might be dying being the last Ancient Ef and knowing his culture will never come back.
But as I said, I will be his friend and spare him from his fear, he will die alongside his fellow Ancient Elves who want to help him with his mad plan.

Well, I'm not sure, but he obviously recognizes the bitter irony in that statement. By taking her powers (and transferring her soul/essence of being to himself?) he sort of extinguishes her - even if Mythal (according to Patrick Weekes) sacrificed herself (or at least her host body) willingly. I might need to do a checkup on that though.
I would like to add, that since he feels no connection to the modern elves, the chosen path could be the path towards not dying tormented by feelings of loneliness. (Also, of course, brilliant writing - letting us know that Solas is prepared to face his greatest fear or - depending on your interpretation - what’s at stake if he fails. That certainly established his determination and character motivation.)
Something I noticed, and wanted to throw out there...bet Varric is kicking himself (AGAIN) for calling it.
Bull: Hey Varric, I was reading your stuff. Where do your bad guys come from?
Varric: Well, some of them come from Tevinter, and some are Ben-Hassrath spies, but I like the stories where the villain was the man beside you all the time. The best villains don't see themselves as evil — they're fighting for a good cause, willing to get their hands dirty.
No wonder Solas's greatest fear is being alone...he keeps betraying his friends! Seriously man, STOP that! Its better in the long run...especially for your friends!
If I had my way, he wouldn't have to worry about dying alone, because my <<Insert DA4 PC Here>> will be there to separate the *******'s head from his body.... and therefore will be present when the genocidal POS dies. #winning
