Dear Bioware,
I don't know what it is about this aspect of game design that makes you struggle so badly. Truly it would be enlightening to see your thoughts on this, and how and why you come to these decisions. But I feel I have to say, in all honesty that even after all these years it's still not right. Let's start with the most obvious one, Mage hats. You've struggled with Mage hats since DAO and apparently the trend continues. There are only two designs that I've found, that are actually decent, one of which is not accessible to you. The one you can use is the Tier 2 Cowl. This is of course a problem, because it's Tier 2. Vivienne's Hat of Majesty is also great, but it only works for her personal aesthetic. This of course leads into another problem you have, but I'll digress until I get there. Next up obviously is the warrior and rogue helmets. These have a few more that are decent, but not too many. Granted this all comes down to personal taste at the end of the day, but I feel the vast majority of hats and helmets simply don't match or go with the armor possibilities at all. After installing Jaws of Hakkon I found a schismatic for something called a "Knight's Helmet". I thought it looked gorgeous and couldn't wait to use it...but wait! oops it seems only Blackwall can use it...why? Why is this helmet restricted to him? Why are all the best pieces restricted to Companions? I love the Inquisitor Helmet but I would like a little more than that. Why are we the ones stuck with the generic looking stuff? Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying I want to look like the most bad ass guy in the group who lords his badassery over all his followers. I'm not saying that at all. I simply fail to understand why you give us so few Head options to begin with, and the few that actually look cool, our characters aren't allowed to use. I just don't understand.
However back to that other point I mentioned about Vivienne's hat. Your freaking helmet toggle. It wasn't in DAO at all, it wasn't right in DA2, it wasn't right in ME3, and it's not right in DAI. I am actually curious how hard this is Bioware. I would love some insight into this. I have no choice but to disable Helmets in DAI because most of your helmets are terrible, no offense but...they are. Unfortunately the choice you provide is too binary, we either have to deal with ugly helmets, or get NO helmets at all. Vivienne throughout the entire game, is lacking because her helmet is toggled off. Blackwall is lacking because his helmet is toggled off. The Companion helmets complete their look, their aesthetic and with them toggled off their visual presentation is lacking, imo. Also the helmets get toggled off in the cut-scenes, well what if I don't WANT them off in the cutscenes?? What if I wanted my Inquisitor to march into Adamant with that Inquisitor helm on, you know like YOU advertised in your marketing?? I really want to know Bioware, is a helmet toggle that applies on a Per Character basis really so difficult? If I like someones helmet, I want to see it. Vivienne and that helmet go hand in hand. There should never be a point outside Skyhold where shes not wearing that hat, her entire armor design is designed around it! If I hate my hat, I shouldn't have to sacrifice the amazing appeal of her hat along with it. If the helmet on a character is toggled as ON, let that helmet be ON, for cut-scenes, or conversations, for everything. Let that freaking helmet stay on unless I toggle it off! This might seem like a whiny, ranting post about an issue that is not really important. I suppose it is in many respects, but it bothers me immensely and I hope I'm alone in that belief. This needs to be addressed Bioware. I cannot take anymore ugly helmets or half baked helmet toggles!
Sincerely,
A Bioware fan.
