I recently came across an article which explains in very interesting terms why the Nightmare Demon we encountered in the Fade should have been the true villain of DA Inquisition. Personally it has me convinced.

http://johnswritersb...sition-ending1/ Here is a link to the article.

Pretty convincing. Remember we have nothing to fear, but fear itself.

Eh. Honestly I rather liked Corypheus. I think he's the best main villain we've had, not that there's a lot of competition for that when stacked against the Archdemon, the Mother, and Meredith.

To me it's just continuing the trend of Dragon Age games where the secondary villain is the more interesting one; Loghain, the Architect, the Arishok.

I can tell that the author doesn't seem to have much of an idea as to how the DA planning process went, sadly, as Corypheus was fairly obviously only introduced in DA2 DLC to set him up as the main villain of DAI, or at least a major villain somewhere down the line. Also, Corypheus wasn't buried under the avalanche (the dragon flew him away, which you can see) and "Elder One" doesn't make much sense as a demon's title, because demons don't really have a concept of time; certainly, no demon would call itself that. Additionally, the Nightmare is specifically the personification of fear of the Blight, not just fear in general; that's why it's allied to Corypheus, and probably why it can create the false Calling. It's powerful, but I don't think it's powerful enough to shred all of Thedas with fear on its own; it can't even magically generate fear in the Inquisitor's party, it has to intimidate them normally.

Very true. Wouldn't mind seeing 'Smiley' again. Remember we didn't kill him. We merely trapped it in the Fade and defeated an Avatar of the Nightmare. That chuckle still gives me goosebumps. Imagine if he managed to possess a mage?!

Maybe the Nightmare can have a second chance, perhaps aiding another magister, such like the Architect, I think at this point it's out of discussion that he did come back.

I really like the new demons and spirits in Inquisition. I really hope we see more new ones in the future, after all we know there are a plethora of emotions and characteristics we could explore.

I'd like to think that The Nightmare played a small role in feeding and influencing the fear of many characters such as Loghain, Fiona, Lambert, etc.

If we think of what Cole does: letting people forget X while implanting thoughts in their minds then I can see The Nightmare doing the same thing, especially since the Nightmare was once like Cole himself.

Eh. I liked the Fear demons and Nightmare. The terror demons looked silly and the dispair demons looked lazy.

Maybe they saving nightmare for his own game or maybe to be the big bad of the series. If every blight he gets stronger he has at least two more and who knows what other fears he has been feeding on. The Dragon Age has been a great period of fear so setting him up to be the biggest of all the bads wouldn't be a bad idea more time to build him up for that grand fight to kill him.

For right now I would throw him up there with at least the top 3 powerful known beings in thedas. The strongest demon for sure. Each party member saw there own type of fearling, Cass saw maggots and he probably looked pretty nasty in her eyes. And we only fought a aspect of him not even his full power. Im not saying he is powerful enough to take over thedas on there own no villain is. But I wouldn't underestimate its feats, creating a calling to effect wardens in a entire country is some pretty good mind control. I don't think he can make you fear him but he can manifest your fear if you overcome it or not is your choice.

I thought the Envy demon in Champions of the Just was more interesting than the Nightmare. Nightmare just uses some dumb taunts that most everyone shrugs at, goes ~mwahahaha I am evil fear me~ a lot, generally comes across as a narmy cartoon villain. "I grow fat on your fear" was some quality level of "this hurts you, Shepard" cheese.

Envy was a lot more effective at creeping into the Inquisitor's fears and unnerving them, basically by playing up the fear of the self. Instead of some dumb taunts about how you will fail because I am so evil and strong blah blah blah, Envy taunts you by showing how it will lead the Inquisition to ruin using your face, how ultimately you will be the villain of the story, the name everyone reviles as destroyer of worlds, etc. That's a much more personal threat, the stakes are not just "defeat the big spider" but "save yourself from yourself." Just the idea of how the world would turn out that's on the death slide in that quest is terrifying, your advisors all smiling and trusting Envy because it wears your face... pity the Haven illusion part of that quest was cut, it would have been top creepy.

I also feel that Corypheus has retroactively become far more interesting because of the revelations of Trespasser making him something of a mirror for

Spoiler

Corypheus does nothing except fail from In Your Heart Shall Burn onwards. If you side with the mages you get no opportunity to explore his motivations and point of view. He was also ineffectual as a physical threat; he and his dragon are a joke, I could have solo'd them. He could've been a good villain, but Bioware just couldn't execute it properly.

I read that blogger's posts on DAI and for the most part am in agreement. I don't think that the Nightmare Demon should have been the Big Bad, though. It's more a force of nature like others have commented here. I just think Corypheus' role should have been better realized; in hindsight his role as mirror to Inquisitor or [spoilers]Solas[/spoilers] is irrelevant, because that just means we spent an entire game building up to the real antagonist and conflict. It makes DAI seem like the story is spinning its wheels while building up to something else. At least the Orlesian Civil War, Mage Rebellion, and new Divine were resolved (however inadequately) otherwise the entire game would feel like a waste of time.

I don't think Nightmare demon would make a good main villian tbh because the demon is pretty much content with where it is in the Fade unlike Corypheus who has the ego and ambition to want to destroy the world. The demon only wants to feed on nightmares which Corypheus provides in droves.

But the demon was very interesting though.

What is scarier than a Demon and a Lovecraftian Horror? The two combined!
