I've just started playing and have obviously began with the OC. I'm still only in chapter 1, but I was wondering how the expansions kind of work in this game. What I mean is, do I finish the OC with my character and then use them on expansion 1 then 2? Or are the expansions meant for a certain point in the story/ meant for new characters?

 

Also, I am going Fighter/ Barbarian but am finding a few things a bit empty. Not really sure what skills are worth my time besides Discipline, as Parry and Tumble are at -15 and -7 (which I thought would be valuable skills for a greatsword-wielding warrior) and most other skills seem easily supplemented by a companion. Can you give equipment to your companions? Teach them spells? When is a good time to switch from levelling Fighter and going to Barbarian?

 

I'm enjoying the game so far! Had to restart a few times due to poorly building my character... Still pretty new to the D&D rules and how things work (still barely understand it lol). This game has got me itching to try Baldurs Gate, that's for sure.

SoU is supposed to be played with a new level 1 character, who then goes on to HotU.

Tumble is useful because for every 5 ranks of Tumble, you get +1 to your armor. For this, the modified score after dexterity and armor is taken into account doesn't matter, just how many points you have put into Tumble. For every 5 points on your modified Spellcraft, you get +1 to your saves against spells. For this, the modification from your intelligence does matter. Also, either Spot or Listen would be useful to help you see enemies who are trying to hide from you or sneak up on you. Listen lets you "see" around corners, but it doesn't help you see enemies who are not moving, like Spot does.

You cannot access the inventory of your henchman in the OC, but you can in SoU and HotU.

Can't teach them spells but you can control inventory in SoU, HotU, and many custom modules.

Appraise (better sell and buy prices) and Lore (identifying items) can also be useful, though it's module dependent (if there's no easy way to get back to a merchant who can ID items *or* the merchants *can't* ID items then Lore becomes much more valuable, for example).

Thank you! So should I finish the OC before making a new character and taking them through the expansions? For the sake of not playing the same game again, would making a whole new type of character for the expansions be a huge learning curve? As stated in the opening post, I am using a 2-handed warrior basically... will making a Ranger or a Mage of some sort make the expansions really hard for me?

Yes, finish the OC then make a new character for the expansions. Some people don't like the OC, but I do, and it is a great way to learn how to play the game.

 

One of the great things about NWN is that there are many ways to play it. I have played SoU and HotU as a Fighter / Bard / RDD, a Fighter / Rogue / WM, a Monk, Fighter / Rogue, a Monk / Sorcerer / RDD, a Rogue / Wizard / AA, and as a good introduction to playing a caster, a Cleric / Fighter / CoT or Cleric / Bard / RDD. If you're interested in one or more of these builds, I will be happy to post it (or them) here.

 

Another great thing about NWN is that it is possible to make really good modules to play, and so there are many of them, lots of them better than the official ones. For example, if your character in the OC is good-aligned and male, you could follow the OC with the Aribeth's Redemption series, which is basically a love story between your character and Aribeth, but with lots of action, too, and it brings you to about level 28. After HotU, you could play the Sands of Fate series, which will bring you all the way to level 40.

 

The Neverwinter Vault seems to be down as I type this, but when it is back up, just search for Aribeth's Redemption or search for Sands of Fate.

Save your char at lv3 and lv8. Some custom nodules start at lv3 and 'Darkness over Daggerford' starts at lv8. Also save game before going to the next chapter. That way if you forgot something you can go back and fix it.

Really? Like, make a save for every level of my character? That boat has sailed I'm afraid... Getting to level 3 is pretty easy though, so I might still be safe for the first suggestion. Think I'm currently level 6 or 7.

Some modules call for a lv3 char. Some have a range for ex. lv4-7. HotU the second expansion calls for lv 10-15. Yes you can take your char from the OC to HotU. I am playing all three games. My lv15 Sorcerer is in the OC and HotU. I have a Rogue/Fighter/Weapon Master in SoU who will go to HotU.
