There is an obvious choice for DA4 companion:

Donnen Brennokovic, the protagonist of Hard in Hightown

We know that spirts can become people, like Cole did. We know that spirits can be molded by humans, like the Avvar do. We know that spirits reflect the waking world, and that the more prevalent an idea in the real world the stronger it's reflection in the Fade. We know from a Varric/Cole banter that Varric's stories draw attention from spirits. We know that Hard in Hightown is very popular in southern Thedas. Finally, we know that Hard In Hightown Chapter ??? exists and wasn't written by Varric.

The inevitable conclusion: Donnen Brennokovic, guardsman ready to break the rules to get the job done, is a real person (or spirit, if you care about labels). He needs to leave behind his retirement in his sleepy tavern and make his way to Tevinter for one last case in DA4 aka Hard in Hightown 3*: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of.

*Hard in Hightown 3: The Re-Punchening is non-canonical

Agree? Disagree? If not Donnen, what other "left-field" choices for companion should DA4 have?

This.

You remember Aveline Vallen, right?  And Donnic?

Donnen appears to be fictionalized Donnic.  Technically both are fiction, but you know what I mean.  Donnen is a fictionalized version of fictional character Donnic...

It's late.  I'm tired.

Huh. You know, I never noticed that. Maybe because I never saw the relationship between Aveline and Donnic as being all that combatative, unlike the relationship between Donnen and his captain, or Donnic being much of a rule breaker. If I thought Donnen was based on anyone it'd be Varric himself.

It stil doesn't mean that there isn't a new, actual Donnen kicking back in the Fade.

Wouldn't say no to a new spirit/demon/human companion. What would he represent? Justice? Order?

sprits are basically the ditto of Dragon age
