No. If I was to get a hold of some dragon bone, I can make myself some high armor rating armor. The only thing that doesn't show up is the slot for the fade touch materials. That shows up later.
Was the Golden Nug implemented because BW realised how much the grinding and fetching sucked?

Isn't stuff like that level-gated?
No. And I know this because I have a save file I loaded up with everything using Cheat Engine: all schematics (except dlc), and 200 of all cloths/metals (except dlc). Yes, it did take a couple of hours to do all of that.
That said, I still artificially limit myself at the start of the game. I have T2 armor and a weapon that I craft with T1 materials, and I also keep all of the party in their default stuff until I get to Skyhold, after which I craft T2 stuff for everyone, and then T3 stuff later on. Pretty much the only reason I craft this gear at the beginning is because of the cosmetic factor; I spend about 20 hours in the prologue before I get to Skyhold and I want to look a certain way.

You know for my Golden Nug playthrough when I get to it (if) I doubt I will deck her out in any of the Inquisitor stuff until after I get to Skyhold. Considering they aren't the Inquisitor yet. And may not be buying into the whole Inquisition thing at that point.
Nothing's wrong with role-playing, but I just found the Hat of the Inquisitor in the Hinterlands... at the very beginning of the game. Also, the Helm of the Inquisitor was Ameridan's, so it's not out of the question that you could have a smith make you a replica, just like the Sulevin Blade or most other things.

I like having real armor crafting options before I get out of haven so yeah I love it.

This was something requested since DAO. Something like a new game+ where you atleast get to keep some items from the previous playthrough.
Here's hoping they'll add immediately for DA4 and not wait a year.

Well mats are level gated. I tried getting early silverite and I got one per node.

Wish i had known about this Golden Nug before starting my 2nd play-through. I half expected my advisers to beat me over the head with the statue for spending all the Inquisitions gold on such a thing. Maybe Liliana would approve. Anyways... this only kicks in on the next new character? I really don't see myself doing this a third time. 2nd time is to get the 3 trophies i missed (Blightmare, Oil of Orlais, Well drinker) the first time. Any good reason for 3rd play-through if you've done both the templars and the mages? i could just do a randy dwarf i suppose. meh

You should be able to use the Nug on your current run, though. Load up the last save from your first PC and sync, then switch back. Though honestly, I'm not sure what problem the Nug's supposed to solve. The game's easy enough without getting T3 schematics early, and you still gotta find the mats.

I like the nug. I'm not sure if I would still be playing DAI without it. Yeah, the game is easy but it's fun in its own way to breeze through the game with an op character/team. Grinding gets really, really tiresome after a couple playthroughts and when parts of the game are so boring already... well, add grinding to that and yeah, it's like playing while being dead tired.
And you really don't need the best mats early on to get adequate stats on a higher level armor and weapon. Though, any of the tier 2 mats aren't that hard to acquire. Some runs through the Fallow Mire becons and you got yourself mats like bloodstone, halla leather, quillback, gurgut and rough hide, silk brocade, fenix scales, everknit wool, etc.

We can only hope that they apply a little more foresight in the early stages of the next game, as they must have some experience with Frostbite by now.
This leaves me really really hopeful for Andromeda.
