No, because we all know "one race" means "human only"... and frankly there are not enough NOPES in the world for that. Once was enough.

This.

I can literally go to may stack of games, close my eyes, and pull out a game where a human is the protagonist 9/10 times. I have zero interest in Dragon Age if it goes one race. (Which you bet your ass will be 100% human)

I'm ok with it as long as the story is good and the situation calls for a one race restriction. Human-only restriction for Hawke was understandable, but the story better have a good reason for said restriction.

NO!

Being able to play an elf who had personal significance to the many elf-related locations and revelations (and being able to romance Solas all the while) is what made this game for me. If we'd been forced to play another boring human noble who had no significance but still passed judgment... *shudder* (It's like if they'd prevented Hawke from being a mage despite all the significance and revelations about mages that game.)

Considering the huge global conflict set up involving elves and Qunari, and possible earth-shaking (literally) revelations about dwarves, it would be criminal to force the player to be only a human amidst all that roleplay potential.

I'd rather have human, elf, and dwarf. If DA4 is against the qunari, as it seems to be, then having one of them would break immersion.

Not really, if the Qunari is a tal vashoth then it doesn't matter.

As for the OP's suggestion.. While I do love race selection I don't really care either way. Depends on the story. One of the reasons DA2 was hated is because it took away race selection and forced people into the role of Hawke. I doubt they will repeat that.. Especially since DAI was supposedly planned to be a human only protagonist which they changed later on.

Unless that one race is qunari, then not only no, but hell no.

One race? How absurd. In a fantasy RPG, if I can't play as a hot elf, me no buy.

I would love one race, so long as the race is human. If they fixed Elves to look more healthy and attractive, I might accept an Elf only race. I really felt having a Qunari and Dwarf Inquisitor was a bit of a stretch... your enemy/non-believer is the Herald of Andraste? huh?

I would like to have a DLC where one plays as a true Qunari, so we can see what it is like to grow up in the Qun. I don't think that would work as a full game anytime soon.

That could be hilarious.

At the class selection you could choose to play as a Philosopher, a Teacher, or a Cook. All your dialogue options would be between Qun, or Rebel and if you pick Rebel too many times you get sent to a re-educator and if you get sent to a re-educator too many times you get a game over.

I wouldn't hate it, assuming we get an assortment of meaningful backgrounds.

No way, I want all 4 races. If we are stuck with only race it will be always human after all and that's boring as heck. Also replayability of game lowers a lot. Bioware should do all the races and just do them more balanced next time, no more default humans.

I'm an Elf girl and I would still object if DA4 forces you to play solely as an elf protagonist. Because I know there are tons of people out there that are a Vashoth/Qunari person, Dwarf person and a Human person.

So multiple race protag it is.

*looks at your forum name* :D --> is suddenly being reminded of a sane drow that secretly follows Elistrae in the underdark :D

Here, have a " <3 " :D

Single race: no.

Why less customization? The Devs are going to model other races, just swap out the head for my char then place it on the body matching the npc race armor or attire. For example, they make a human noble with an amazing indoor attire, let my human only char wear that attire by swapping out the head and palette match visible skin areas. If the body size changes: so? Though this could be avoided by making an extra class of the same object with different dimensions. All races shouldn't be able to wear everything but it would be nice to wear what their npc counterparts are wearing within the world.

They also need to fix the Qunari badly.  No long hair...etc. Multi-race all the way.

I personally believe the issue with the implementation of the races in DAI was that it wasn't originally planned from the start. It was something that happened late in development when they were given another year's time to work on the game. If it had been something they were working on incorporating from the jump, it probably would have been better realized and more satisfying.

So I hope this time around they plan on using all four races from the start.

If I were being selfish and unconcerned with what other people like, I would happily take a human only protagonist with a great deal of customization.  I like playing humans the most anyway and, while I do usually experiment with other races, humans are my go to and the ones I consider to be my canon protagonists.

My actual answer though would be that I'd rather be able to choose from several races.  Not only would I be very disappointed if I had to be an elf or a qunari or something, I know that a great many people would be unhappy losing the ability to choose.  My own personal feelings about the protagonist's race aside, I don't think I could endure the rage that having that choice taken away would cause.

I don't believe that even in the pre alpha they had a elf save

it's just they didn't give any real Feeling or significance to your choice of race

No, putting the game on last gen is what did that.

I am still annoyed that they did that and it did hurt the game in my opinion.

I just don't want to be human. I'm fine with a single race, as long as its not that.

I'd prefer Elf, because of how related to the plotline they are, but I don't mind something else if Bioware finds a way to make them equally interesting.

Nope, I don't want human-only (which is what 'one race option' means). Hell, if anything I'd want all four races available with unique origin stories.

If they didn't do body customization the first time there's no reason to assume they will the second time...

There are plenty of things that had not been there in DA2, I'd rather not use it as an example.

As for the OP - there's always a point where quality turns into quantity.

It's 8 f-!ng armor models and 4 VAs per 1(one) player character. Wanna have those? Then brace for the impact and get ready to have little to none unique armor sets, less hair options, less lines to voice, huge lore-holes (because no, there's no way Dalish elvQuiz can exist in the world of the 'Masked Empire'), sense-holes (Dalish Elf asking 'Who's Mythal?' and not understanding elvhen) etc. Also, don't forget about the race unimportance and lack of reactivity (minor dialogue options at best). Basically everyone suffers from that 'variety'.

DA4 (as we might suppose from the last scene) is going to have big issues as is, because 'non-mage PC in Tevinter' sounds bad enough already. The story should sensibly vary according to that aspect, if not  we'll get MageHawke 2.0.

But why stop there? Instead of game over you get to experience being subjected to quamek and just do mindless chores while your handler wipes the drool off your chin.

If that means playing a noble then no but otherwise, I don't care.

As most of my characters are assassins and thieves, I would prefer to start as either a mercenary or criminal.

It must -must- be linked to properly fleshing this choice out again. I would gladly push off a great deal of content at the other end of the shelf to really emphasize the different experience.

I'm only going to play human per canon anyways, but I still think it is important to have that choice. Even for humans, Hawke's was the only "origin" story that was actually interesting. DAI I perceived as nothing but a restriction added to my subconsciousness and headcanon, and DAOs noble origin was plainly run-of-the-mill tiresome. Even though I shamefully enjoy playing as an empowered superhero version of myself, I found the City Elf and Dwarf (both noble and commoner) Origins to be the most interesting ones in DAO by far; and it's not like Thedas isn't still full of fertile ground for similarly believeable stories for a potential hero.
