I don't and I will exercise my right not to

Solas is lying, betraying, supremacist, racist, possibly specist, stuck up, know it all bassterd with the moral compass of a brain dead rat and hypocrisy that would make anti gay religious zealous laugh.

He's not that at all, but since I've already written two rather lengthy and thoughtful posts about Solas (post-Trespasser) in other threads, I don't feel compelled to write a third one. You can go find the posts and read them if you want; meanwhile, I'm just going to say the following things:

  1. I agree with people who understand that the situation is a complicated one.
  2. You're totally mischaracterizing Solas, his motivations, and his nature.
  3. Your username definitely fits - congrats.

Also, why the hell would I want to back Tevinter in that fight?

What about Tevinter and Qunari competing to have the dreamer's allegiance?

I'm more of a stand back and let them beat the hell out of each other while I enjoy a cold beverage kind of guy.

Does Solas remind anyone of the Reapers?

He's no where close to being as stupid as them of course, my deaf and blind cat is probably smarter than the Starbrat, but their similar in that even with their supposed vast knowledge, power and experience, they still can't think of a way to compromise and find a solution to their dilemma's without resorting to a plan that involves mass murder.

I mean, seriously, Solas. You can't think another way to preserve your people and not destroy the world in the process?

How about gathering all those Sentinel elves and using the eluvians to teleport to that nice valley in Trespasser?

How about living in the semi-Fade like Crossroads?

Or how about abandoning this whole dumb project and just living out your life with elf messiah girlfriend?

You could make jokes about humans with Varric, beat Blackwall at Diamondback, deal with mage politics with Cassandra, talk about magical techniques with Dorian and help Sera pull pranks on Vivienne.

I could be great, maybe not as important as restoring your people to full glory, but still a pretty good life. But no. Just have to a bad guy.

Oh well. Helpful you won't give three equally terrible colored-coded choices in DA 4.

How about the millions of modern elves, dwarves, qunari and humans? Do their innocent lives not matter?

Okay, I'm saying my Inquisitor will try to save all the innocents, the ancient elves as well as all the modern peoples threatened by Solas mental genocide plan not just the Ancients alone.

Okay, I'm on neutral ground now. I'll take a crack at this (hehe)

Given what you know of Solas, what would you do in his place? Thedas is ruled by tyrannical power-hungry leaders and you start a rebellion to stop them. You create the Veil, imprisoning the Evanuris and your people in one convenient bubble. You sleep for a thousand years, find a way to reverse what you did and bring your people back. The only problem is the people who took their place (current Thedosians) might die. The current world is kind of mirroring what you tried to stop to begin with - powerful people enslaving others - The Circle, the Qun, Tevinter Imperium - the list goes on. The cycle is restarting, and to you, people are like Tranquil. You have only met a few who are actually decent people fighting to reverse this.

Now you have the ability to bring back the original people (ancient elves) who fought in the rebellion against the Evanuris - and rid the world of the accumulating trend of slavery. All the people you knew and cared for can come back, but this current world will suffer.

You might still say you wouldn't do it, but you have to at least sympathize with Solas in that it's an *extremely* difficult decision to make. You literally have the fate of two worlds in your hands and you're constantly weighing the pros and cons of your decision. You might still disagree with his choice, but at least you have to respect how difficult of a choice it is.

It's not like he's doing it for the fun of it, it's a legitimate conundrum. If he *didn't* try to do it, some might still call him a monster for not trying to fix his mistake.

Two wrongs don't make a right, pal.

Solas is shaping up to be the best BioWare antagonist EVER. He isn't some mustache-twirling lunatic. He's a sympathetic character with good intentions. He's deluded and incredibly dangerous, but hey! That's why he's likely to be the antagonist, not, for example, the hero.

All I have to say is that the protagonist of DA4 is going to have to be mighty indeed because Solas can turn people to stone without even looking at them.

The road to hell men, the road to hell - what was/is it plastered with again? - Right: Good intentions! (Hell, if you take this even downright evil dictators can claim to having only done "the right thing" (at least from their POV))

Yes, I dislike Solas after this (note: Haven't played that DLC (but YT-Vids present it quite well (and make me want to buy it -.-)) as I decided after doing a 100% run of the vanilla game to not reward Bioware for disappointing me again (just like I did after the Mass Effect 3 debacle...no matter how much I wanted to get the Citadel DLC or Omega DLC)...I mean come on Corypheus as the main antagonist, Fiona (who's not stupid!) acting like a damned fool (enslaving her mages and herself to Tevinter!) etc. etc. the story was not great and the open world (as beautiful as it looks!) was quite empty (and fetch quests are never really fun))...but I do pity him, too (after all he tried to do the right thing when putting up the veil (he probably saw no alternative - oh, note: That's why the veil is so "easily" damaged, because it's not natural!), but he doomed his people (taking their immortality, weakening their magic (note: Maybe we need Tevinter in the future for exactly that reason - as their mages might be the only ones powerful enough to even fight one empowered elf (if the veil is gone!)) so that Tevinter could easily enslave them and destroy their culture (which the loss of a lot of their knowledge and arts (can't call something based on magic technology now can you?) - like those libraries and magical constructs - contributed to of course...it's like losing the internet in say 100 years when we are even more dependent on it than now!)...he essentially feels guilty and again sees no alternative than to destroy what his act (creating the veil) made possible (humans controlling almost all of known Thedas, elfs being slaves etc.)...-.- in a way he's harsh, but he's got good reasons (from HIS POV) - though I still feel betrayed!

greetings LAX

ps: I loved getting all those lore bits (elf-gods being mortals - though not quite probably (Mythal is living proof, she survived without her original body after all, meaning that the other elfen-gods didn't really destroy her, though they destroyed her body), the veil being the cause of the elfs weakness and aging (they apparently could be killed before but didn't die natural deaths) etc.)

I have a personal image of Inquisitor Cadash simply using his little spectral Reaver Dragon Claw as a hand in replacement of his now stumpy arm. In relation to Solas? I must say that I will stop him from his plan, If I can talk him down then Great! He seems to want me to, but if not? Then I am sad to say that He will be PUT DOWN.

Geeze we didn't even degenerate we went straight to a Godwin in the first post, I'm impressed.

As for redeeming Solas, I've given my opinion on the subject and will just point you to my sig line.

I never liked Solas from our first conversations in Haven where he pretty much gives away his madness.

And "if" we ever encounter him again (the Inquisitor's comments make me think we'll purposefully be playing someone else when encountering Solas) - and he cries about all the elves I've killed in my quest to stop his insanity... I'm going to laugh so hard.

Haughty, bald rat-faced "god".   When I get through with "your people" there won't be a knife-ear left on Thedas to worship you.

You should not have let me live.

If he really wanted to be stopped he wouldn't have been afraid to say too much about his plans.

If he didn't want to be stopped, maybe he would have just crossed that Eluvian left the Inquisitor to die without revealing nothing of his plans

My feelings on Solas post Trespasser are as follows; from a moral standpoint he's the worst companion we've had. Worse than Zevran, Sten, Isabela, Anders, and Loghain. He's a madman consumed in equal parts by a Messiah complex and a Martyr complex. He's no better than Corypheus.

But that makes him considerably more interesting than he was previously, so good job on that front.

Love, love this statement - too perfect.... too funny.....too true

thank-you

DA4 should be the story of Elves and Humans uniting to get rid of Solas and his buds....Free the Elves

@duckley:  Not sure if yours said it... but the ending of Tresspasser made it pretty clear it won't be "elves" and "humans" vs Solas.

It'll more likely be "dwarves" "humans" and "qunari" vs "elves" and Solas.

Next stop... elven extinction.

I would like to have at least have a few elves realize that Solas is just using them, but I fear the vast majority of them will still drink the Kool-Aid.

I do not think that even half of the elves will follow Solas. They are too smart to join his cult and I think a lot of elves would not be for wiping out everybody else. Plus they will be wiped out too, once he is finished using them. Just my opinion, of course.  :)

Shame. If he went all yandere at the end of his romance and decided to keep your arm with him forever, I'd be significantly more interested in a Solavellan playthrough.

#bestromance

It was never an equal relationship because Solas was always lying. If you lied to him, he would be upset. This is called a one way relationship.

Sorry. The motivation is clear he is depressed that he screwed it up for Ancient elves. Having stated that he himself will tell you that the Dalish are not his people. If you read the masked empire, Solas is the guy that kills "slow arrow". What he planned to do all along was mass genocide. Even his lover will state, "Solas we were not even people to you". Sure he now has a different image of your people, but the plan hasn't changed.

You just get a few years of comfort. He still is a mass murderer. Just a well spoken and thoughtful mass murderer. He caused the breach which is a small sample of what is to follow.

There's the idea that even if he doesn't, someone will, since there are supposed prophecies saying as much. That should be interesting.

Golden rule don't live by prophecies it goes against the idea of free will. I can't see the writers supporting no free will. My guess is that they will push the other concept which states "never blindly follow prophecies".

I was soooooo angry at Solas but... I chose to redeem him. He's my Inquisitor's BFF after all, no matter what he does.

Maybe it's because I'm a lot like that in real-life friendships too. Sometimes friends can hurt us, knowingly or not, sometimes we disagree more or less fiercely, but the friendship is the core no matter the differences. Through hardships, they can either become rock solid or be completely destroyed, and it's always our choice.

I was terribly angry, but I trust my Inquisitor will find a way to prove him wrong, even if it represents eventual sacrifices.
