Hello,

 

I just noticed something yesterday....and either it is new....or I am completely blind! I am playing on PS4 and have done a mage run through before.

 

While playing with Solas and auto attacking with his fire staff, I noticed there was an additional magma/lava kind of effect bursting from the staff head when he was shooting. It looked awesome! I have never seen a fire staff do that before.....

 

I decided to try an electricity staff.....low and behold the same thing! There was a new lightning burst at the head of the staff when he was auto attacking. This too looked amazing.

 

I then went to try a different fire staff.....and the effect was missing again, it was just the usual plain fire bolts that I am used to.

 

Can anyone tell me if this is a new graphical enhancement that was recently added to jazz up mage auto attacks? And why do only some staves seem to have it and others not?

 

I haven't found a cold staff yet, but do they also get a fancy ice effect when auto attacking?

Nope, it was Tyrdda's Staff.

 

I really loved the effect, it also showed up on a random grey fire staff, but was absent from another.

 

Same with the lightning effect, was on one staff, but not another.

 

Haven't been able to find a cold staff yet.

Ah never mind, I figured it out. The new amulet Kitty's Collar gives staffs a nice special effect when it's equipped and you auto attack. Very nice! The different tier staffs seem to get different effects. The better the staff, the stronger the effect :-)

? really? i tried kittys collar already but didnt notice such things. i was using a lv27 crafted staff

I think corruption runes do something like that as well.

Yeah I have tested it heaps and it seems kitty's collar is giving me the extra effects. I finally found a cold staff and that has the additional effects too, although a bit more subtle than fire and lightning. It adds more blue particles and ice chips falling off your staff when you attack,

Bit of a thread necro, but I've tested this too and have to say that Madrict is absolutely correct: Kitty's Collar does indeed appear to give a graphical boost to the staff autoattacks, varying with element - it makes them look a lot cooler (lighting especially) - so cool in fact that it's almost a bit bothersome as I don't really want to wear the collar on my mage, but also definitely don't want to go back to not having the touched-up graphics. Need to see if it's an ability that can be duplicated in CE.

I think it depends on the stavews you use as some do it some don't I was using heart of rage towards the end pof my current run through Trespasser dished out a lot of damage with it too.

It's not staff dependant as far as I've found, it seems to come and go with Kitty's Collar. It's true that the "Heart of" staves come with graphics for their perma effects, but this is a different thing - it's located at the end of the staff head rather than the character body, it's more subtle than those effects, and it's only visible while you attack.

Seems to go with Kitty's collar and, it works for the whole party as long as one member is wearing that amulet.
