I started a new character last night (currently level 5-6, I think; Human, as I have played Qunari Mage in the past), and before that I had not played single player since December last year, so I don't actually know what is the current stage of the game difficulty-wise (with all these trials added), but I remember back when I used to play it intensively, any half-coherent build could rolfstomp Nightmare at mid-high levels, while very few would survive the early stages. Now perhaps the Trials have balanced that gap, but I wonder how to make this build as viable as possible early on, too. How should I optimize loot, skill points and which areas should I be exploring firstly? (Btw, I don't have Descent and Jaws of Hakkon, and I am not willing to use cheat engine - at least not just yet).

Well the toughest fights are in descent and Haakon dlc (bolters and hakkonites).

But for non qunari there are no really important items to be had in the dlcs.

You can turn on walk softly trial and even ground for challenge. Walk softly toggles heartbreaker abilities on enemies.
But you do need trespasser ideally for the new ability toggles and trials rewards (belts of element pact) and enemies.
Most important items I would say are 1.) ring of doubt (stealth mage) you get it in exalted plains. In the shrine to syliase. It is in the lower left side of the map. 2.) fade touch imperial vestments cotton (walking bomb masterwork) not sure where to reliably farm it without using something like ce to quickly get it. Maybe you can lucky in a trial rewards chest as it generates random fade touched mats from time to time. Or in mid game there are several unique staves which have this effect. 3.) deepstalker sigil (optional) : +200% flanking damage bonus, - 50% attack.

Maybe a few others. Get the mask of Grand duchess by placing both celene and briala on throne in orlais as it has best critical chance helmet for humans.

Since I soloed the game I first went frost and barrier for defense before getting ability points to get firemine. If you are in a group you will be set with the right side of necro tree and firemine from inferno. And the items above.

This is just after I had enough points to respec to necro and take walking bomb. I did not have the masterwork walking bomb effect yet but I had ring of doubt and deepstalker sigil. And some pretty mediocre tier 2 equipment. Here is the build:

Fade touched imperial vestment cotton is dropped by Venatori Gladiators.

The best place to collect it is during Iron Bull's loyalty mission "Demands of the Qun".

There are four Venatori Gladiators on this mission.

Is there a way to trigger fire mine early or are most people casting it on/very close to caster?

No it always has activation delay. The flame array version may have a slightly shorter activation delay than the searing glyph upgrade though but still has one. In general I never minded being at close range with this necromancer as I used ice mine array for defense and and aoe freeze in conjunction with the flame array and also had fade step to move in and out of close combat range quickly and if everything goes wrong and you do get killed you just self revive with heal on hit at the end of Similacrum. You eventually can tank quite well with ice mine flame array and barrier but I think necro as damage dealer is most effective with stealth and deepstalker sigil and quickly repositioning to flank with fade step after rushing into the middle of combat and placing the mines. I would definitely not just stand in one place as then I would play ke or rift and it gets boring that way.

A crowd control necro with this setup and firewall can be more a stationary nuker but then I'd use sigil of great bear to cast everything (lightning cage, firemine, spirit mark wisps) without ever worrying about mana shortage.

Of course with another mage in the party you can have them group the enemies for you with a pull of abyss or static cage and hit them with a standard searing glyph firemine from a distance too.

I am at level 14 and unfortunately I haven't come across any Walking Bomb Masterwork (not even the lowest ones) to try the OP's build, but so far I am having quite a bit of fun with a Pyro Necro build. Ring of doubt is such a game changer, when combined with Flaming Array it produces massive crit AOE damage. I saved gold to buy the Wrath of Lovias early on (60% crit damage with Lurker skin) and by level 11 I was hitting 7k Flaming Arrays, up to 10k on vulnerable enemies, enough to one-hit-kill any mook in the game at that level (Nightmare + Trials on).

Now I am eager to get the ultimate Trespasser goodies (Encore, Supreme Pact Belts, Skin that whatever Armor), but I just hope it doesn't happen too late in the game at a point in which these items won't serve me much.
