Fetch quests were never the problem. The amount of fetch quests is the problem. I mean, both dao and da2 had fetch quest but they were only there as fluff on top. Inquisition's fetch stuff makes up the bulk of the content. It's all fluff and very little meat.

For all intents and purposes...this is true. Though I still say just get rid of them. Lol

Though I would prefer to see more side quests that are like mini-stories and hope they do a lot of things like that in ME:A, it's kind of unrealistic to expect that all fetch quests be removed. I just don't see the complete excision of fetch quests ever happening in any RPG.

I don't have a problem with fetch quests.  If I get tired of them or don't like them, I stop doing fetch quests and continue with the main story

I don't mind fetch quests, it's something I expect with most RPG's, just don't stuff the game full of them.

Yes. If not then look at the fetch quests from Witcher 3 as inspiration on how it's done.

  They are not inherently bad.  I did quite a few in Skyrim but how they were introduced didn't bother me.   First big city I was in windhelm or something I think.  you can bump into a lady who is trying to become a trader and wantes training form the khajit, but to do so she has to present them with a gift of a mamoth skull. There is enough dialogue and story when speaking with her, where I am happy to say hey sure I'll keep my eye out for one.

Basically how the quest is presented is 90% of the battle, add 3 decent lines to tell me why i'm doing this and you are probably good.  You add enough depth to the character and their background story for why they need the X item it seems like a reasonable quest.  In a open world there can be enemies along the way so its not just picking up groceries at the citadel.

also given we likely are colonists setting up a new colony I can see lots of the quests being fetch quests as you kind of do need to fetch things to keep a colony going.

In DA2 there were a lot of quests that were triggering from picking up a piece of loot (don't remember if they returned in DAI), and really all you would do is take the loot to the quest mark and hand it in and all the while not knowing what the **** just happened. Those types of filler quests need to go but if you take time to gussy up the filler stuff so to speak and make it at least somewhat interested then I'd have no problem with a lot filler content.

But if people want a game like Mass Effect 1 it has to have endless quests that aren't tied to the plot of the game.  The problem with Inquisition at least in my opinion was the presentation of the quests themselves and not the quest design and again in my opinion part of the problem was the amount of player races and voices that made adding the "interesting quest wrapper" non-existent because they would have to animate an interesting wrapper eight times for each side quest.

I don’t want them to tell me a story. I want them to give me a complete world in which to play.

Not to be harsh but I am glad that you are not Bioware's target market.

Nicely put. I'd rather have a small map with fewer, more story heavy quests than a gigantic map filled with fetch quests and collectibles that are loosely tied to lore to excuse their existence.

I absolutely hate planet scanning.  No planet scanning.

Oh god. Yes. I remember having no other choice but to scan the planets in order to find all that crap just to upgrade myself and my squadmates. And - I sh** you not - I remember sitting there, staring at my TV screen like a zombie while repeatedly scanning and launching probes. It was the same repetitive crap.

:::scanner sound:::

:::spin planet:::

:::probe sound:::

:::results sound:::

And Tricia Helfer's voice is forever stuck in my head: "Launching. probe."......."Probe. away." ........ "Probe. launched." It got so bad and repetitive that I had to mute the sound. At one point I realized how much money I paid for the game - how much I paid to sit there and be bored out of my freaking mind watching the same sh** and listening to the same. damn. sounds. Oh my god. I have to ...to stop. I can't speak of this again. I have planet scanning PTSD.

Not to be harsh but I am glad that you are not Bioware's target market.

Witcher 3 had the same strong points and its main plot had a ton of fetch quests. Thing about witcher 3, is it didn't just straight tell you to "go there and fetch that thing", it often said something much more vague like "investigate this ruin, or house, talk to this person about that" and the bits of evidence, the ingredients or whatever were just incidentally things you pick up along the way.

Bioware just have to do better at camouflaging the fetch quests.

Agreed.
Dragon Age: Inquisition felt like mostly filler, since most of the game was indeed fetch quests. I'm okay with side quests, as long as they are fleshed out and actually written well. It's why many are afraid that ME:A will be open world, and full of those style quests. I'd rather have a tight 30-40 hour game that is mostly story driven. Than a 80-100 hour game, where 65 hours or more is side quests.

The main point of the fetch quest is to act as filler where it would be too expensive to produce nothing but high quality side quests but at the same time you need to fill the area with content.

If you are struggling to fill your world with content then you could always make the world areas smaller, if the content you are filling the world with isn't fun or interesting then what is the point? I would much rather a smaller game that is really fun to play for a shorter play time than a large game that bores me for the majority of it.

No more of that scanning bullshit like ME3. If you're gonna have fetch quests, at least make me go and, you know, fetch it.  Sh*t was lazy, yo.

I don't mind fetch quests. MMOs and RPGs are known to have fetch quests. However, like someone mentioned earlier, don't have too many of it in the game.

I would prefer more story driven quest and maybe a few fetch when required, but well written not filler. That and have the conversations with npc's having ME1/2 style and keep it that way IMO.

This would mean diverting a lot of resources into these missions. Are you sure that's actually what you want?

I'd prefer leaving the zots where they were. If the scanning doesn't work for you, I suppose the galaxy map could have been cut down to the complexity of the KotOR map.
