Is it possible to change say dorian's necromancer spec to say a rift mage?
I find myself using the same companions due to their availability and specs and completely ignoring others (like cole).
Possible to change follower specialization?

You can change Cole to an archer if you find he dies all the time as a DW. Rumor has it he performs better as an archer since AI can manage archers better than dual wielders.
I have a set of people I take with me because of their personalities more than their actual usefulness. Sure Solas is useful, but I really don't like the egg at all, so he rides the proverbial pine. Same with Dour McSads er Blackwall.

I think I tried all of the rogue and warrior alts: Cole as Archer, Sera as DW, IB as S&S, Cass as 2H, Blackwall as 2H. No wait, I've never done Varric as DW. DW Artificer should be fun. Dual Wield and Archery are not specializations dear 
Those are Ability Trees.
Specializations for Rogue are:
Tempest, Assassin, and Artificer; and no you can't change them from these -- or yourself for that matter.
