I downloaded and installed the game via Steam. I start a new game and when I get past the beginning movies I get the pistol. When I open the save menu I push New Save. The little spinning disk in the corner tells me the game is saving. But when I go to save again there are no saved games. The Autosave doesnt seem to work either.

If I copy an already saved game from another copy I can use the Resume button at the games main menu to play the Autosave/Quicksave. After resuming I still can not save.

On both the Main Menu or the ingame menu when I press Load theres nothing there. I can press the Select/Switch Career button but nothing shows up.

Ive looked are permissions for both the saved games folder and the steamapps folder and set Everyone to full. Nothing. Ive check to make sure all files were not read-only. Ive uninstalled and deleted both folders then reinstalled the game and still nothing.

I am having the exact same problem on the regular (non-steam) PC version of ME2.

I am having almost the exact same issue.  My version is steam as well.

I never at any time see a Load Game icon on the main menu, and when in game after watching the intro, save the game but when I go to load do not see anything.  I have tried this with an imported character and a new character.

Very frustrating.  Had the game for 2 days now and cannot play it. 

Ive tried modifying my config file and moving the save location, no luck.

Also, in the first ME, I had this problem and it was related to the fact that my My Documents was mapped to a Drive letter. Not sure if this is related.

Same problem here. I'm able to load it, actually, although only through Resume. The saves work fine.

I also had My Document mapped to a drive letter. (D:\\) Ive had this problem before. I moved the location to D:\\My Documents. I'm now able to save but still not load

I'm having the same problem...I created a "My Documents" folder in E drive (Where Mass Effect 2 is installed), and now the saves appear, but I can't load. I can play the game if I only use resume, I'm not sure what happens if I die...I originally played the game for hours without realizing it wasn't saving, which is annoying enough, but this is ridiculous.

I fixed it by making my My Docs folder NOT the root of a drive, restarting the game, it will remake all the directories, and it worked.

I did the same thing. Reset the 'My Documents' folder to default location and deleted Mass Effect 2 from the bioware folder and restarted the game. Made a new character got past the movies and saved. It worked. Pressed load and it worked to!

After you do this work around, can you remap my documents to root and still have ME2 work? BTW, that this problem exists is just total bullsh**. Stuff like this shouldn't happen.

EDIT: I just tried this work around with my steam copy and it didn't help. I can save but I still can't load. WTF?!

One thing I did notice between the 'Able to save and not load' and 'Able to load' it when i could not load it just saved the game in Docs\\Bioware\\ME2\\Save as Save_NUM.save

but now it saves in Docs\\Bioware\\ME2\\Save\\NAME

suggestion is try making a directiory (dont think it matters whats its called. Copy and renamed mine now i have 2 carrers.) and copy/move the saves into that directory and see if that works.

Weird. I did what you said and made a directory called JOHN in Docs\\Bioware\\ME2\\Save\\ and now it totally works. Now, whenever I create a new save, it saves in the new directory. That's just totally weird; it shouldn't work that way, right (manually doing something that should be automated)?

So the workaround:
Exit the game and make sure your "My Documents" doesn't point to the root of a drive. Restart the game.
If this doesn't fix it, exit the game again and make a directory in this path:
My Documents\\Bioware\\ME2\\Save\\
For example: My Documents\\Bioware\\ME2\\Save\\John\\
Copy your saves into that path and fire up the game. It will recognize the saves so you can now save AND load.
