So why use it? I haven't used it since I unlocked the black widow myself. But why would I?

I agree that the Black Widow is the more practical weapon.  There's a je ne sais quoi about the bolt-action snipers though; that One Big Shot that either drops the target instantly or goes completely to waste if you miss.  For that reason, I personally find it a rewarding and enjoyable weapon to use if I play a good game with it.  Entirely subjective, of course.

 

The Widow's encumbrance isn't too bad on an infiltrator, and certainly not after it's been levelled up a little.

 

As a rare weapon, it's easier to unlock and level up than the Javelin.

 

The Javelin's fire delay is said to require a bit of practice (can't speak from experience as I haven't unlocked it).  Perhaps the Widow is thus a little easier to use?

 

Spare ammo doesn't seem too problematic once it's been levelled up a little.  I did use the clip upgrade on it when mine was at lower levels, mind.

 

And, most importantly... evidence from SP suggests that the basic Widow design is of quarian origin; it is therefore a fine lore-friendly weapon for quarian infiltrators.

Every scrub can play with a Black Widow, Vailant or Javelin. But only real men and women can handle the one and only M-98 Widow.

It's a great gun, there are better, but why would you just use the same weapons all the time.  Using different weapons is fun, and improves you as a player.

M-98 Widow is a great gun. I have it maxed out so I can just go full piercing on it. Somehow though I am drawn to the Javelin of late on my sniper kits. I've been playing this game for years now but still only have it at level 1. I'd trade my widow X for a javelin X anyday.

Probably the Gun I want most on my alt account. URs are fine and all, but once you have your commons and uncommons, most rares are pretty suck (And outclassed by the uncommons, like Mattock, and Tempest. Admittedly though, Mantis and Katana are best in class until rares). Mantis is well and good, but Widow has more punch. And punch is good when you have a brute and banshee on your case.

I guess that on classes that care about the weight like the turian sentinel it could be a good alternative to the javelin Otherwise on a SI for instance I don't see any reason not to use the javelin, except style, honor and most importantly balls.

Yes, it may not be as good as most, but it can still make one of the biggest and most obscene shadow puppets in the game.

Ok so you might use it if it's a higher grade than your other ultra rares, but if that is the case, wouldn't you just use a kishock? Easy to rank up, lighter, more damage?

I really like the weapon but find it hard to pick over the javelin because of the reduced damage and lack of jav stepping.

 

It's still a good on infiltrators though.

The kishok is harder to use, can be unreliable off host and can't pierce, so can't get double hits on bosses.

I Kishock on host and Widow off-host, and always with my SI. The game's not always min/max, sometimes it's flair and BOOOOOOOOOM

Because it does more dmg per bullet then Black Widow. Meaning you can 1 bullet headshot with it on non-infiltrators too.

 

EDIT - Widow is like my fave SR in the game too, by the way.

This thread actually inspired me to bust out my SI Widow tonight and I was not disappointed, as usual.  Something about single shot weapons and reload cancelling just feels so right.
