One shot one kill is the way of 1337 sniper. The widow only falls short of the javelin and kishock regarding damage per shot but the firing mechanics of those two require a lot more skill. I don't get black widow fandom. Valiant is better.

Probably the Gun I want most on my alt account. URs are fine and all, but once you have your commons and uncommons, most rares are pretty suck except for shotguns (And outclassed by the uncommons, like Mattock, and Tempest. Admittedly though, Mantis and Katana are best in class until rares). Mantis is well and good, but Widow has more punch. And punch is good when you have a brute and banshee on your case.

Thanks, you're totally correct. Every Rare Shotgun has a use, can't really say that about the other classes.

I quite like the gun. My top two favorite one shot weapons in the game are kishock and widow, and given kishock's awkwardness off-host, I tend to use widow quite a lot when I am in the mood for one-shot weapons. Javelin's fire delay is something I don't like and so, Widow takes preference.

Also, the single-shot rifles are great for learning to snipe precisely because they punish you for missing.

This, but also because I enjoy a powerful single shot sniper without a firing delay like the Javelin. The Javelin is worth adapting to the shot delay, no doubt, but the Widow is no slouch.

The Javelin can be a bit annoying to use off host, these days I only use it on the FQI as host (got a bit bored with it on the GI)

As a rare weapon, it's easier to unlock and level up than the Javelin.

The Javelin's fire delay is said to require a bit of practice (can't speak from experience as I haven't unlocked it).  Perhaps the Widow is thus a little easier to use?

^^This exactly right here.  The only reason the Widow isn't a "great" weapon is because the Javelin and Black Widow exist and are better (at mid-high levels, that is).  I have posted about it here before, but I went well over 2 full calendar years between unlocking the Javelin I and the Javelin II.  I used the Widow X plenty in that time, because it's a superior gun to the Javelin at those levels.  It's also easier to use.

Widow is there if you don't want to deal with the jav's funky fire delay.

Out of the single shot SRs, the widow is the strongest conventional rifle. By conventional, I mean something that operates normally with no gimmicks, and fires bullets.

I remember when the valiant was the most coveted gun in the first few months of this game being out. It took about a year I think for the devs to drop it in the RNG store but when I used it I was disappointed

Every scrub can play with a Black Widow, Vailant or Javelin. But only real men and women can handle the one and only M-98 Widow.

I hear that all the time. Then I hear them complain about wasting so many shots.

I don't get black widow fandom.

Uh.... because you can OSK enemies and still have 2 more shots in the chamber for killing his friends?  That's why I like it anyway.

It doesn't OSK much. Generally it takes two shots to down a shielded mook then you have that awkward one shot left. The spike damage on infiltrators pales in comparison to single shot snipers and it's unbearably heavy for casters. It just seems like a niche weapon to me more than a supposed amazing perfect rifle. I used to use it a lot more before I became competent with other snipers. Reload cancelling a widow or javelin mitigates a lot of the benefit of a three-shot clip IMO.

With phasics you can one shot most mooks on Gold, no problems.

Maybe at level 1, it's been a long time since I had it at that level.  But a level X Black Widow does roughly 8400 damage on an infiltrator landing a headshot (used QFI here) without taking into account the x10 multiplier against shields from phasics, and for example, a Cerberus Centurion has 1800ish health and 1600ish shields.

A non-headshot from cloak does 3100ish, again not including the x10 phasic bonus against the shield.

Using this example the phasic damage is 1732. This won't break shield gate on a gold nemesis, phantom, hunter, pyro or collector captain. Out of these the nemesis is the only one I believe can be OSK after being gated. This would make a big difference against 3/4 factions, especially geth. Not to mention single shot snipers can usually land the OSK on the same units without requiring a headshot.

You're talking about 1337 sniper skills and complaining that you need a headshot?

Seriously though, with Phasics, you can OSK a lot of stuff on Gold with a high-level BW with a body shot.  Centurion, Engineer, Marauder, Rocket Trooper, Bomber, possibly a Pyro if you double-hit their gas tank, plus anything undshielded.  If you add in a debuff like Cryo Blast or Recon Mine, you can add a few more to the list (Nemesis, Captain, Possessed Trooper, Possessed Abom).

EDIT:  This is why the Drell Infiltrator is the best with the Black Widow.  Plop your Invasive Scan Recon Mine out there in front of you, and you can just methodically mow through everything that passes through the scan field.  The debuff increases the number of things you can OSK, and the slowdown makes them easier to hit.

I have no problem landing headshots but I like knowing I don't need one to land a kill I may desperately need. And I meant the rifles themselves being 1337 not my sniping skill. Sorry if I was unclear about that.

While it's great you can OSK those units the single shot snipers can do all that and more and have better spike damage vs bosses. Maybe this all comes down to me not caring about DPS as much as spike damage.

This I can agree with. With the wide debuff and speed penalty of recon mine, the black widow is superior on the DAI than a widow would be. That being said I still prefer the javelin on him. I like being forced to really focus in on accuracy and precision whereas the black widow allows me to lazily sling out shots without as much of a penalty. So I suppose preference is ultimately determined by psychological factors. Both sides are right depending on perspective and that's why I feel the weapons in this game are generally very well balanced. To each their own.
