I really just want to hear some
background music while exploring.

The tavern/Trespasser songs are great though.

Is the OP serious? DAI had the best soundtrack in any Bioware game period. The DLC soundtracks, particularly Trespasser, were even better.

Yes.

They should hire Demetori.

Yes. This is why an equal number of people like and dislike diarrhea. And bad breath. And morbid obesity.

He didn't claim an equal number. He pointed out merely that, for every opinion, someone holds a contrary opinion.

If I had to sum up Inon Zur in one word it would be: forgettable. Wonky implementation aside at least I  noticed the music in DAI when it actually played.

I think his point was that none of the music is playing while exploring, which is a big part of the game. During those moments there is rarely any music apart from 6 seconds of "Dawn Will Come" or "Samson" trumpet.

No, he complained about both that and the choice of composer.

I think the thing is people miss like a "battle" music in the game, or something of that nature.

The best levels were the ones which had music to them. The Haven Attack comes to mind, the soundtrack for that level just fits...perfectly. I felt like it was a last stand, all for nothing push.

That is what the game is missing, the music here is quite good...better than Origins which had no real musical presence outside of Lelianas singing, and even better than Dragon Age II which had good leitmotifs but little else.

That's one of my favorites. Such a fantastic track.

Quite the opposite for me. If I had to sum up Morris I'd say forgettable.

Lol sure, DAI had a crap soundtrack. Most people agree that it was crap. Your opinion is your opinion but it is wrong.

DA:I had some very nice soundtracks (I'm generally a fan of classical orchestral music), but it was somewhat lacking outside of plot critical story segments.

Was never a fan of the synth style music of ME1 even if it suited the setting. If its anything like ME2 or ME3  I will be satisfied with the OST.

It's too bad i could barely hear the DAI ost during my last playthrough due to iirc an audio bug. I heard it was intentional and if that's true, smh, because what happened with the Hissing Wastes was fucked up. Though from what little i've heard most of the tracks were okay, but nothing to write home about.

Speaking of Leliana, I really like this track that plays at the end of In Hushed Whispers when future Leliana is fighting off Venatori and demons.

The ME soundtrack was overall great IMO, both memorable and fitting with the game. The DA soundtrack was far more forgettable, barring most of the tracks in DA:I and some few tracks.from the first two.

Since ME:A is the first of those future games I'll put it here.

I'm listening soundtracks of DA and ME series and it brings me so much nostalgia. Then songs from DAI starts play and that comparsion makes me really sad and sorry for what DAI got.

BioWare used to be very good and careful in the matter of their OST. It used to be amazing or even mindblowing (ok, that's maybe too personal opinion, but it was really good). I can be reconciled with DAI being more ambient then it's predecessors, but when you listen the OST out of the game... it's obvious that Trevor Morris wasn't the best choice. And not just a bad choice of a composer. The OST wasn't even implemented well. When wandering, it was almost always dead silent. And when the music finally started it pulled me out from playing how random it was. Even in cutscenes there was that silence - so many times! Only parts I recall being kinda awesome in DAI is while fighting at the Wardens Keep, the Dawn Will Come part and maybe the final talk with Solas in Trespasser DLC. Hell, even standing in the tavern and listening to bard's songs was better than most of the game (speaking about the OST).

So, BioWare... look back (and most importantly LISTEN) to your previous games, when there was almost no silence and if so, it served to some purpose. And don't save money on finding and hiring great composers like Inon Zur, Sam Hullic and Jack Wall are. We appreciate them and their work.

I'm looking foward how Mass Effect: Andromeda will end up. Hoping for best :)

Sorry, this track completely counters your argument. I liked the Inquisition OST, and I'm not concerned at all for Andromeda's.

it's not just Bioware. Blizzard made the same mistake with Diablo 3. D1 and D2 have one of the most epic soundtracks in gaming history. then they hired some no-name composer for D3 and to say the soundtrack is lacking is the understatement of the century.

here you have an evil-looking otherwordly dungeon (Zoltun Kulle's Archives).........and what do you hear? sad violin music like it's a wake or something.

PS: Zoltun Kulle is voiced by Steve Blum (Grunt) :P

Russell Brower is anything BUT a no-name composer. He is one of the best resident developer composers in the industry. I loved the D1, D2 soundtracks, and the D3 soundtrack is certainly up-to par to the earlier ones.

As for BioWare, with the exception of DA:O (and DA2), all of their soundtracks were amazing. DA:I and ME3 especially were high-points in BioWare's music production.

I'm a bit of an out layer, I can love game soundtracks, just not while I'm playing the game.

I will listen to them while I do housework or while reading, but I can't get over the immersion breaking aspect of them, what I have 47 piece band following me around all day while picking herbs? To me music belongs in cutscenes and places where it logically makes sense for there to be in-world music, so DAI system of mostly silent exploration is perfect.

For me its pretty much a tie between DAO and DAI. DAO has some stand out emotional pieces, but DAI has the minstrel/tavern songs which are beyond awesome.

Yup. D3 went for the ""EPIC musical'' while D2 went for the GOTHIC instrumental awesomeness and the difference is huge.

I'm less concerned about who makes the next soundtrack then about whether I actually get to hear it. I like DAI's well enough but it wasn't around much, I find trespasser music more memorable largely cause it was more often there.

Ambient music may or may not cycle as much as some might want, but all of the major sets that will exist on an album will likely be heard strictly in the main story missions, same as with DA:I.

Is everyone on crack? The main melody of Inquisition's theme was great but the rest was not unique and most importantly I literally thought my game was broken because it was implemented so alarmingly poorly into the actual game

Playing through DAI now, about 100 hours in. After listening to the soundtrack separately and going through some epic tracks like The Dawn Will Come, Thedas Love theme, Main theme, etc. I have to say this soundtrack is likely better than DAO and DA2. There are some really solid tracks, and they really set the tone and ambiance of the game.

That is, they set the tone and ambiance of the game when you actually hear them...

Aside from the main cutscenes, battle and ambient exploration music is all but absent. It might trigger once in a while, but it's very lacking.

This is the kind of music that Bioware has done in the past during gameplay.

And if I had wanted a comparable in DAI, we could just look at Skyrim for some easy inspiration

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPWVfCtnGyg

Again, the problem is not the quality of the soundtrack. It's how it was implemented.

DA:I's soundtrack was far superior to that of DA:O and DA2, both of which had forgettable soundtracks. Inon Zur's work for the DA series was quite frankly boring, and I wasn't sad to see him go.

DA:I's problem is that it barely plays it's soundtrack. Someone made the bad decision to make the exploration portions of the game largely a silent experience, with music instead replaced by the ambient sounds of the enviroment. While immersive, that loses it's appeal after about the first 20 minutes or so in the game. You also spend about 80% of the game running around in those wilderness maps, so you very rarely hear DA:I's soundtrack.
