So based on information on past interviews, we know that when BioWare develops a game they will only write in characters that wouldn't of died. Yes, I know there were exceptions but by and large they do.

So I wanted to predict those characters from DAI that would be in the next game.  I am not sure what their role would be.

1. They would not have major variations in the story outcomes (epilogue).

2. They could not of died in DAI.

So here we go:

1. Varric - In all the various outcomes, his is always the same.  So good chance we'll see him again.

2. Morrigan - Yeah, she's going to be back. (I know it's obvious! :) )

3. Cassandra - Divine or not she could play a major role

4. Leliana - Divine or not she could play a major role

5. Vivienne - Divine or not she could play a major role

6. Solas - This one needs no explanation :P

7. Dorian - We are going to Tevinter so makes sense, also his story ending was the same except for the sending crystal.

8. Inquisitor - Not the main protagonist, the Inquisitor is always alive at the end of the game so good chance we'll see them again.

9 Valta (from The Decent DLC) - I think we'll see her again, strong possibility.

BioWare has left themselves a good pool of returning characters to pull from.

People we will never see or maybe small/cameo role:

1. Sera  - I don't think we will see her but anything is possible

2. Cole - 50/50 chance we will see him.  Stronger possibility if he is a Spirit than Human.

3. The Iron Bull - I don't think we'll see him again, due to how his ending could of turned out.

4. Blackwall (He'll always be Blackwall to me I spent over 1000 hours calling him Blackwall!) - We won't see again.

5. Josephine - I don't think we'll see her again.

6. Renn (from The Decent DLC) - Probably will not see him but anything is possible with Lyrium.

7. Cullen - 50/50 chance we will see him. If he is part of the Divine's forces or was a Quizzy LI then yes we will see something but small. Otherwise, we not not see Cullen again. He had too many different ways he could of ended in the game. [UPDATED]

Dragon Age 2 Characters who might return:

Hawke - Assuming he survived in DAI.  He could be back.

Alistair - Assuming he survived DAO and DAI.  He could be back.

Stroud - Assuming he survived DAI. He could be back.

Fenris - There is a possibility he could be back, depending on how things ended in DA2 for him.

Sebastian - He's alive but I don't know if he is interesting enough to bring back in to the game.

Merrill - Unlikely we will see her.

Anders - We won't see him again.

Isabella - She remains a very popular character so possibility we could see her again.  Since she is now in the DAI Multi-Player we know she is a strong candidate to return.

Bethany/Carver - I don't see them returning.  Their story is pretty much done.

Avaline - We won't see her again, unless we got o Kirkwall,

Tallis (from Mark of the Assassian DLC) - There is a possibility she could return and play a major role based on her story.

Dragon Age Origin Characters who might return:

Wynne - We will not see her again.

Zevran - He remains popular and was on the war table missions in DAI.  So there is some possibility we will see him again. Especially learning what we do able Elves. But he could of died in DAO so who knows.

Sten - If Sten is still alive or the Arashock he could play a major role, but from what I could tell from DAI the Arishok seems to be replaced regularly.  He was in the comic books so who knows.

Oghren - I don't think we will see him again.

All the other companions from DAO were already mentioned above.

So what do you think?

I think we will get Dorian as a major NPC and Sout Harding as a companion.

I think it'll be the other way around, myself.  I expect Dorian to be the "bridge party member" - like Oghren in Origins and Awakening, Anders in Awakening and DA2, and Varric in DA2 and DAI.

Harding is crazy-popular, and so her roll increased a fair bit in the DLC. She even gets a song in Trespasser.  They'll find a way to shoehorn her in :P

I agree with *most* of the list above, although Josephine is in neighbouring Antiva and is a favourite with the BioWare devs, so she's actually got a decent chance.

Of the Shroedinger's characters, I do expect Fenris to have a good chance because he's in Tevinter in most playthroughs.  Merrill as well, because she's an eluvian expert - I'm surprised she had no role in DAI.

They keep saying the Hero of Ferelden won't return, and I respect that.  But so many of the fans are shouting repeatedly like kids for a toy that they might give up like worn-down parents, break down into tears, and give them a Hawke-like cameo with a single-accent voice and character creator.  Whether they hold out on that for one more game or not is anyone's guess n :P

I think Sten is almost guaranteed.  BioWare has given us returning characters whose body we've seen (though Leliana finally got an explanation in Trespasser) and changed stuff that was in the final slideshow at the end of Origins, so Sten who is supposed to have died "offstage" is easy to bring back.

Hawke, no. Not going to come back. To much work for such little payoff. Hawke's story should be done now.

Varric. I think his story is done now as well. He became Viscount in Trespasser (well, for me he did. Not sure if something else can happen with him) so he's going to be far more preoccupied now to go adventuring again.

Iron Bull. I agree. He won't likely come back because of how things could have gone. I doubt he's going to become a character like Leliana where they'd retcon it. I think they (BioWare) won't pull that move again.

Blackwall. Maybe... If the Wardens play some role in DA:4, there stands a chance we could see him, as well as Stroud, Alistair or Loghain; though this would depend on whether or not they survived Adamant Fortress.

Josephine. Probably not. She would unlikely become a companion, and her diplomatic skills would likely not be needed. Especially between Tevinter and the Qunari.

Fenris is the only one from DA:2 that I think could come back. Maybe not in DA:4, but somewhere in the future. I'd like to see Merrill return, but I don't think she's a big enough character to really stand on her own, and I don't think she'd come back as a companion. Unless Solas ends up with Merrill. Ha, I'd love to see that.

Sten and Shale from DA:O. I think we will definitely see Sten again at some point. He's the bloody Arishok! If we don't see him again, I think they (BioWare) would have missed a great opportunity. Shale... I want to see what becomes of her. Don't hold much hope though, but I think out of the all of them, those two.

The rest, I'm pretty much with the OP on.

Where is Cullen? He told Quizzy his sword would always be there for her. If that means anything...they may even be *******. Just putting it out there. I am not sure about Josephine.... if we ever make it to Antiva, she may gives us the welcome she promised. I enjoy returning characters, it keeps the story together in my opinion. :)

That all depends on whether or not we play as the Inquisitor again, which I don't think we will. I think we will be playing as a character who answers to the Inquisitor. Now, if that is true, there is a chance that Cullen could become one of our companions. But, I think him becoming a companion diminishes the idea of "Let's find people he doesn't know."

Clearly you haven't taken that Leliana dies playthrough through Trespasser.  Very satisfying explanation (and one I'd guessed) :P

But I'm with you on Iron Bull not appearing.  He's a Shroedinger's character now - the only one i the party, I think - and they don't like putting Shroedinger's characters in.

Yes, I missed Cullen, I updated my original post. I don't think we'll see him again, only as a cameo if the Inquisition still exists under the Divine and/or was a LI of the Quizzy and they play some role in the next game.

If they totally leave the Inquisitor our of the game (but I find that hard to believe they would not have some role in the next game.  The Inquisition essentially does continue is some capacity after Trespasser.

A lot of past companions and characters will appear or will be mentioned but I doubt more that two will actually be on your party. I would be more in favour with entirely new characters

Yes, I agree, I don't think they can bring Cullen back as a companion.  I feel like his story has been told, and however he winds up in DAI is where he goes.  In one of my play through he marry's my Quizzy which I really enjoyed seeing. Glad we got that option with some of the LI's story's.  We needed more of them IMHO.

The game will most likely be in Tevinter so most likely we won't see anyone who could be Divine Victoria or is ruling lets say Kirkwall or some other southern locality. However Doran and Calpernia are near certainties to appear in some capacity.

I hope that Calpernia is a major character in the next game.

There's an established story for her, which is intriguing and could easily be expanded. She has clear Tevinter connections, and that's a likely location for the next game. And even though we've only seen a thumbnail sketch of her so far, there's already complexity there.

Basically, they've created a great character, and I hope they don't waste her.

Given she either A. walks away or B. escapes after being defeated and her driving goal in life is to save Tevinter it would be shocking if she didn't show up.

Major Role (advisors/companions): The Inquisitor (if he's not gonna be the PC), Solas, Dorian, Morrigan, Briala, Cassandra, Cole, Varric, Leliana, Calpernia, Abelas, Harding.

I would like to see: Sera, Cullen, Fenris, Merrill, Alistair, Hawke, Josephine, Sandal.

:) I just put it out there because I didn't see him(Cullen) on the list. I think we'll hear more about our past than actually seeing anyone if the Quizzy is just a cameo.

Fenris loathes Tevinter so I can't see why he would want to go back there unless he's pulled back into the story somehow with Hawke. I would so love to see him again though :3 I feel like Cullen's story is so done, quizzy will probably get a minor role as organiser but I doubt they'll have an action orientated role (would be cool to see them change things up though). Oh I'd love to see Viv, Cass, and Dorian again too, indifferent about the rest except for maybe Varric but I feel like his story's done too.

I expect Dorian to be a major NPC, probably the major point of contact between the Inquisitor and the new protagonist.  I think he's the only DAI companion I expect to appear (Aside from a certain elf)

Calpernia and Lace Harding are both always alive (Or her death isn't confirmed in Calpernia's case) and the next game would be a great opportunity to explore them as characters.  Calpernia could offer us her unique perspective on Tevinter and the previous game.  Harding could tell us about all the sexual harassment she suffered under her previous boss be the Inquisitor's agent in the field.

Fenris could appear in a sidequest, that'd be interesting.  Maybe some Magister has decided to try and replicate his abilities to create shock troopers to repel the Qunari.

I don't see anyone else appearing.  All the Divine possibilities are out.  Bull can die, though a living one might make cameo.  Sera might not even be recruited.  Varric is running a city on the other side of the continent.  Cullen and Josephine seem unlikely.  Leliana is gone, all her epilogues seem to suggest her retiring one  way or another, which I think is Bioware's way of finally letting her leave the series' story.
