Sometimes it's hard to read people online. I'll just move on 
Haven't seen the main Cullen thread as being tyrannical. It veers off topic sometimes for sure - but haven't seen much rudeness or intolerance...
This ^. It is hard to read people online, and sometimes posts are made that can be interpreted as aggressive or that can quickly escalate into something aggressive and ultimately end in real people getting attacked for their views on a character. Unfortunately it leads to being overly cautious.
Cullen has elicited so much attention from both sides of the fence and being a fan of his I have seen how at times we have been attacked just for liking him. I'm not saying it doesn't happen to all characters, he is just the one I notice it more with because I have an interest.
A lot of times someone will pop into a thread just to rile people and not to start a civilized discussion, unfortunately you can't always tell, especially when the post comes across as aggressive.
It's not being tyrannical or quashing of genuine discussion to be cautious and try to stop possible red flag posts from turning a thread into a slanging match.

I avoid the Sera thread entirely because if I want to have a meaningful discussion about Sera regarding character flaws or questions, I am immediately called a "hater" and told that I am "stupid."
I casually peruse through the Cullen thread for fanart, but don't post much since Cullen x Trevelyan is the dominant pairing, and talking about other pairings is immediately titled "offensive," and "hurtful" to the dominant fanbase experience.
Meanwhile, I can brazenly post on IB thread how I romanced IB while murdering the Chargers, and no one makes a personal attack. The level of maturity between the fandoms is stunning.
As somebody who lurks quite frequently in the Sera thread, I find that bunch to be respectful, and tolerant.. if anything, maybe a little too nice when certain people go in there to complain about various things.
In fact, I find it's the "Anti-Sera" fandom that are the ones who act immature. I can recall many a time when somebody creates a thread asking help for her romance -- and even threads that have NOTHING to do with Sera at all -- somebody from the "anti-Sera" league will jump in and make pointless, immature comments. Anything from "My Inky was too good for her cuz she is sew immaturez hrhr DERP", to, "EWWWWWW LESBIAN COOTIES!!" (snarky exaggeration, but outlines my point nonetheless).

I also like Cullen but also don't bother going into his thread for whatever reason.
I see someone already mentioned SWTOR. I've played through the first chapter of the Jedi knight story 3 times. Only the third time was I motivated to pick a different conversation choice in a effort to avoid one of the antagonist dying. Because after playing through this game, I properly realised he sounded a lot like Cullen. Also, will probably avoid torturing an acolyte on Korriban from now on, as he also sounds like Cullen.

Playing a female character in Diablo 3, walk past him and he says, "(says all seductive) There she goes again..."
Thanks to this, every-time my character walks past Cullen in Haven, the above plays in my head.

Everybody is fed up with the usual rude group that disrespect other members of the Forum in the Cullen thread.
No one is forced to deal with a bunch of people who have treated others with less than respect because they wish to discuss anything DA or Bioware related.
As far as I'm concerned as a fellow member, this is now The Official Cullen Thread.
For all members of the BSN to come and discuss the character freely, without intolerance or censorship. As it should be.
