That's right. While others merely prefer to rename their weapons and/or armor I like to go that extra mile and think up a backstory to go along with it. I recently made a male Elf mage and came up with TWO slight variations on the same backstory for the Staff of Corruption template. One is completely standalone and the other figuratively rides on the coattails of my Inquisitor. Yeah. That's how I role. (cue canned laughter.) For length purposes (and your sanity) I will only be sharing the standalone version (my favorite of the two).
Name: Staff of the Undying Shadow
Variation 1: Dales McDalish (sorry Bioware, you need to make a more extensive language system for your Elvhen. It is impossible to come up with an original one that fits with the lore without either copying one that already exists or just making up some anachronistic nonsense. But I digress) was an apprentice to his clan's keeper and was well-gifted in the magical arts. Dales was charismatic, handsome, assuredly popular with his peers and his stature-quite literally-made him stand out. Unusually tall for an elf, the elders were pleased to see this had not made him some sort of bullied pariah among his clan.
One day, during a customary sojourn through the outskirts of the forest, Dales came upon a clearing that was obviously not natural. Lying in the center of the clearing was a fragment of rock jutting from the earth. What was most conspicuous however was not the rock but the shadow it was making. It was not that of the rock itself but of a figure.
After Dales informed the Keeper of his discovery, he was harshly warned to never visit the place again. But Dales was so profoundly curious he could not sleep that night. He made for the mysterious piece of land the next day, this time with one of his closest friends. They both noticed the shadow never changed size or moved. It was always cast out from the front-facing North-and even if the sun was directly overhead it remained the same. As the day drew to a close Dales' companion returned to camp and was promptly confronted by the Keeper, who demanded he head back and fetch Dales before he endangered himself or worse, the entire clan.
But when he got back to the clearing Dales was nowhere to be found. He scoured everywhere but found nothing except Dale's staff lying on the ground. When he neared the jagged rock, he noticed the shadow was facing east instead of north. And, perhaps it was just his imagination but he saw that the shadow had gotten slightly taller.
