So how rich is Varric Tethras ? I have been wondering about this lately.

The Dwarf seems to have an endless supply of money. He managed to bribe many relevant people in Kirkwall. He runs his own spy network. He single-handedly funds the restoration of Kirkwall.

Is his wealth the equivalent of the CEO of a large multinational company or something ?

Varric is so rich, he can afford 8 servants to comb his chest hair at once.

He's so rich that he can't hire bodyguards to keep Cass from capturing him.

So how rich is Varric Tethras ? I have been wondering about this lately.

Something like that. Varric has a substantial amount of holdings - he mentions it once when you ask him if he's a merchant in DA2. Part of what he does, if I recall, is like investment banking.

You can ask him about his business in DAI as well. His family has invested in a number of companies, and then there's all that fat Deep Roads treasure. He also has a little cash from his book sales (though his publisher has been ripping him off for years).

The amount of money he's sank into rebuilding Kirkwall is partly why ...

At first I misread the title as "Varric's Health" and thought it had something to do with the Red Lyrium Shard he could keep in DA2?

 

Still, his wealth isn't big enough to get together with Bianca.

Well, i think where may be Varric's personal wealth and the accumulated wealth of house Tethras

Dunno how that differs and if he can use family money for pesonal needs=)

What I don't get is WHY Varric is still in the Merchant's Guild.

Varric seems to be pretty well off. Yet in DAI he's still in the guild.

 

 

Maybe they give out free Oreo's on Tuesdays.

According to a banter he has with Solas he's also active in the Carta, which means he's either shipping food and other neccessities to Orzammar or part of the lyrium trade, or both.

Well, Mae's late husbando was his cousin. Presumably he was a Tethras too?

eta, Then again, he is dead so... maybe Varric is the last of his kind after all.

He says to Merrill in a banter that he has family like a rat has fleas.

 

Merrill: Does that mean you have a lot of family, or that they make you itch a lot?

 

Varric: Both

 

So I assume he has a lot of cousins and distant relatives that bother him for money.  He probably has retainers in Kirkwall to help him manage his business and his money when he isn't there.

I don't think it is like he has a vault of gold somewhere... well, maybe he does now...

 

He is a businessman with many contacts and investments. He is very wealthy when looking at his investments, but it's not like he has mountains of gold just waiting to be spent. All his wealth is spread out in circulation or something.

 

He probably has a lot of people indebted to him, debts that he can call in at anytime, but he will probably just use them as contacts when needed.

^That. He's wealthy but most of it most likely is in assets that would need to be liquidated if he wanted straight-up mounds of cash coin.

I believe that his most wealth is in a form of obligations or loans that other have to pay abd interest rates

And dont forget that he is a succesful writer!

There's a difference between "I'm so rich that I'm basically untouchable" and "I'm actively withdrawing from society."
