Sooooooooo yeah, apparently according to the leaks one of the tasks the Pathfinder will have is setting up new colonies on uncharted planets, just wondering what level of control do you expect to be able to have over these colonies and how much you can customize them.

Of course the more skeptical portion of this forum would probably tell you that the colony thing will be somewhat like the Strongholds in DA:I, a feature that promises more than it can deliver with the end result being little more than being able to unlock an extra hub that allows you to perform more fetch quests, but lets entertain the notion that Bioware might be able to deliver this time, what do you hope to see from this building colonies aspect? Building placement and customization? Being able to set up a low orbit day spa?

If they are similar to DAI then I would expect the quests to have more changes to how the colonies are able to defend themselves.

For example we had quests so soldiers had better swords in DAI so if we had a similar quest in MEA then I would want soldiers in MEA to be able to defend the colonies better and also show this in the game.

What ever quest is linked to the colonies should be shown in the game by colony getting more prosperous the more we help them. That way the quests would make sense for us to do them.

pointless to speculate over "alleged" leaks. another pointless thread by Skadi. don't you have anything better to do than post stupid threads all the time? in the absence of a dislike button, here's to ya:

That was rude and unnecessary. You think you're impressing anyone with that? You sound foolish trying to berate someone over this, when speculation and theory crafting is perfectly acceptable. Especially at this stage.

Personally I don't think it's important that we get to set up hubs on different worlds that we can explore and visit. However what is it important to me is that if we do colonize these planets, it would be cool to see these colonies develop over the course of the game. I don't expect to find a campsite somewhere and then 20 hours into the game there's a whole city there, but it would be cool to see colonists that you met and helped earlier in the game, expanding their territory. This kind of thing makes me feel like I'm making a real difference in these people's lives.

You're spot on OP.

Sounds awesome but I expect a wimpy delivery aka DA:I.

I'm not sure about the level of control we would have. If it is something we can have a hand in and shape, I would love to see how the colonies affect our game. Or at the very least, like Mathias mentioned above, like to see the changes if you help people out.

If they do let us do something like decide what type of colony goes where (e.g. mining, farming, military, etc.), I pray to the ME gods that they do not have a system in place where only one way works. I wouldn't mind if a particular type of colony fails because it won't do well in that location, but I would not like it if they set it up to where only a mining and nothing else like a farming colony could thrive when the conditions might be good for either.

I'm not sure opening resorts when your civilization is barely surviving is such a hot idea.

Well apparently we'll be able to decide where they should be established and where to focus their resources (Recon Settlements, Mining Settlements). Other than that I doubt we'll have much control over how they will be structured. There are only so many features a game can have and I doubt a city buiding sim in MEA is necessary.

What if you find a nice hot spring?

Sounds like a hot idea to me.

I don't like the idea of setting up your own colonies and stuff. I wish it would be just you and your crew, without having to create civilisations and things. That's not what Mass Effect, to me at least, is about.

I really hope this thing is not a part of the game. Did Inquisition not do a bad enough job already?

For the record, the central problem is not gameplay. It's writing. If the protagonist is yet again building a one-man empire from nothing, saying they need to be an extraordinary character is an understatement. They need to be beyond extraordinary. And actually written to be as such.

BioWare did not even come anywhere even approaching this with Inquisition. A staggering failure of writing. I simply do not have an iota of faith that the writers have the competence to pull such a character off. Although to be fair, I'm not sure any writer could.

I agree with you,
It just doesn't sound interesting.
How many "settlers" would we have to have on board anyway, to accomplish multiple settlements?
It just doesn't sound feasible (or interesting) in anyway to me.

Maybe setting up a colony for the asari, then one for the Krogan, one for humans and one for the other species that came from the Milky Way

Morale is an important consideration in any colony.

Interesting.

I think this is one of the things from the leak that has most of my concern. I don't want it to be some kind of soulless thing like DAI.

I don't know how much control we'd have over colonies aside from just finding a place for them to thrive. Maybe you choose if you have a farming/mining community or something. In my mind, I'm leaning towards wanting some kind of lite Tropico colony management thingy that you can access from the ship's computer. It could be a completely different mode in the game that you can bother with as much or as little as you want. Probably won't happen.

But back up just a second. How many "settlers" do we have on "the boat"? Is there a way to get more colonists from the Milky Way? I don't know.

I expect most worlds we visit will be empty at first as we Pathfind. Then we find an acceptable settlement location and viola, buildings appear and this then acts as the hub for the world moving forward. I hope that the settlement grows independent of our direct input (cause really do you need the Expedition Lead to ok making a water purifier? Just freakin do it or you'll die of dehydration). I hope we get some general influence, like picking a capital that becomes the largest settlement, training some PDF forces, establishing an orbital construction facility over some world / in some asteroid field (raw materials).

All in all I'd prefer to be the guy who charts worlds looking for an appropriate place to settle, then hands the reigns over to the civilians to actually establish the settlement. Only take charge during military & diplomatic events that require a ranking officer. I don't want to micromanage a civilian settlement.

Well you can go GTA V and have some narcissistic character that already has history and is deeply flawed, and wants to build colonies like a racist dictator, with little choice in character but interesting vehicle on exploring new worlds, but of course that's very unlike Bioware and likely won't happen. In that case the colonisation could work.

It's an interesting concept. I think it would be cool to have that option, though I personally wouldn't do it. I would prefer to build up defenses in the colony. But I'm thinking there should be R&R options.
