Warning: This post is rather long and will probably bore you to death if you have no interest in the lore. Also - massive spoilers included here.
Since I did such a good job at guessing here:
The source of red lyrium and the blight is from a dead or corrupted titan. Like the one we went to in the decent DLC. Whoever or whatever controls the blight takes residence within this titan or controls it remotely. Dwarves lost their ability to use magic due to mining lyrium which is now confirmed to be the "blood of the titans". The "song" described in the lore is the titan's way of communicating or manipulating the world magically. Hence why this theory makes sense. The corrupted, dead or controlled titan is controlling the darkspawn through its corrupted version of the titan song. Dragonblood is considered powerful magic. My guess is that normally the corrupted titan uses its song to control the hordes, but it can not control them too far. Hence why the darkspawn can not be in the upper world... without an archdemon.
What the titan (or the one in control of it) actually does, is using the archdemon as a proxy for its song or "line of communication" if you will. Or amplifier maybe. Illustrated below. This way - the titan can extend its reach and lead the darkspawn in the upper world. I still have no theories regarding the motivation of the blight if controlled by a sentinent being.
Except this. I read that there is rumors of a new blight after the trespasser DLC. Right after Solas disappears. Coinsidence? Maybe. Remember that solas heavily objects in DA:I regarding killing archdemons with "WHAT IF YOU ARE ONLY MAKING THINGS WORSE?". It could be that Solas is in charge of the blights or someone he works with. If Solas's plan is to use the blight to remove humanity in preparation to merge the world with the fade again then it all comes together. Any thoughts?
To sum up:
Red lyrium is blighted.
Lyrium is titanblood.
Therefore dark/corrupted/controlled titan = source of red lyrium and the blight.
Lyrium has the "song"
The blight is connected to the "song"
Darkspawn dont appear without archdemon.
Dragonblood is powerful magic.
Therefore - Archdemons are amplifying the control of the blight making it possible for whoever behind the blight to extend the reach of the darkspawn.
Finally - Solas may be controlling the blight to cull the world of humans in what he sees as an act of mercy before merging the world with the fade again. Also... sorry solamancers. If true this means solas will break your heart thrice unless your love can overcome him in DA4!
